Well you'll just need to decide whether you want your GP to cover your maternity care or get a midwife. You have until 13ish weeks to decide but mayaswell start thinking about it.

The other thing he may do, or maybe not yet, is ask you a list of questions about your family history ie heart problems, twins, etc. And he'll tell you your due date (but you've probably already figured it out )

Nothing to stress about! It's all very exciting - congrats!

Thanks everyone!
I think my due date is going to be hard to figure out ?!? The first day of my last period was October 12th, (mental cycles) but I had done 2 HPTs since then, the last one on 24th of november that were both negative. Can they work it out from my levels in my blood tests?

Only roughly i think, they will probably arrange a scan so they can suss out your dates though (just a tip if you do want a scan the more confused you seem about your dates the more chance you have of getting a scan)

Whenever you have your first scan they will confirm dates at that point anyway. I was irregular when I conceived this time around so I made a guess and when I went for my 20 week scan I found out I was only 17 weeks but just adjusted the date from there. Due dates are only estimates anyway so it's no biggie.

ETA: Everyone gets a scan at 20wks, if you are in Auckland you will likely get a 12wk scan too. Everywhere else in the country you only get a 12wk scan for dates if you are really unsure and the Doc/mw agrees. In Palmy Nth I think they try not to send ppl off for scans at 12wks unless really necessary, as a cost saving thing.

The other thing that will probably happen at your docs then is that he will do a quick feel of your fundas (tucked inside your pelvis) - by poking around your tummy on bare skin if that makes sense. The size of the fundas will give him a very good idea of how far along you are. I hope that explanation makes sense, basically go wearing t-shirt and trousers (or something like that) and be prepared to show between the top of your panties and just under your ribs. (It's not really a big deal.)

They can also figure out an estimate of dates by checking cervix.

That's if you feel the need to get your gear off!

lol Do they do that routinely?

Yep usually around 12 weeks the fundus (top of the uterus) can be felt above the pubic bone.. unless it's twins.. he he.

Congrats!! yayayay.

Hrmmm... mine did! Not with Han though... I was a bit pissed off finding out that they could figure it out like that or through fundus height... maybe then it wouldn't have been a huge shock finding out I was 16 weeks at the scan when I thought I was less than 8!!!

Oh yeah - and congratulations!!! Hope your pregnancy goes well (Sorry for jacking topic )

Congrats!!! Let us know how your Doctor visit goes!! I remember on my visit I told the doctor Id done a test the night before and then again in the morning because I was in such disblief lol!! So she said she did'nt see the need in doing another test and just set me up with some folic acid and a scan date, I'd had an ectopic the year before and if I get pregnant have to have a scan asap to check its not another, anyways, thats how I found out how far along I was! ...and I was 7wks 4days!

I've just gotten home and now feel a bit frustrated! Emotions are running high! I knew it would be hard figuring out my dates etc because of my mental cycles, but the doctor is taking it from the day of my last period, which would mean I was 9 weeks pregnant! I did however do 3 HPTs in this time, the first 2 being negative (24th November, and my Postive one yesterday)

I'm having a blood test tomorrow and seeing her again on Monday, so hopefully she can give me a bit more of an idea then.

She sent me off saying I was probably 9 weeks, but in my heart of hearts I just don't think I am.

I've had cramps all week, which makes me think it was implantion, which, correct me if I'm wrong, occurs around week 2-3 weeks. I only noticed a sore boob on Tuesday, which was the first day I felt nausous (sp).

Now I can't wait for Monday! I guess if they can't tell much by the blood tests I'll have a scan rather soon anyway and find out then!

Oh good luck. I am hopeless at giving any kind of information about any of this because I was 12 weeks before I found out I was carrying Ethan

Fingers crossed you will get some answers monday then, bet its going to be a long weekend for you!

In chch we get 12wk scans to check for the nuchal fold thing and 20 weeks scans to check for any other problems. I know of at least 6 other women who have had scans to check dates at around 7 weeks.

Sparkle you might just have to guess how far along you are - say maybe 6-7 weeks. But when you have your first scan they will figure dates out then so don't worry about it.

Also, your last negative test may have actually been a false negative if it was too close to conception.

Nausea/sore boobs/cramps can occur anytime in pregnancy, usually anytime in the first trimester between weeks 6 and 12. They are just symptoms, not really time-tellers. I feel cramps around the 6 week mark I think. They can be caused by implantation and by stretching as well.

Even if you are referred for a scan on Monday, it may take a while to get one. In Palmy they are booked up to 2 weeks or so in advance and then it depends on whether you are available at their next available time slot.

I don't want to put a downer on you, just fill you in a bit. Don't worry about dates, they'll get figured soon enough. In the meantime, here's hoping that ms doesn't establish into anything nasty!

Hello Sparkle,

I went through the same as you, I have very long cycles.. the doctor told me i could be 5 weeks or 10 weeks. I went to the scan expecting I was 10 weeks to find no baby and the women doing the scan said - sorry cant see a baby and done a internal- there was the egg. I was actually 5 weeks 1 day.. So take it as it comes and its best to not go expecting you are so many weeks. We ovulate at different times forsure.

I am now 9 weeks. :) Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Just home from the doctors. I'm about 4 and a half weeks preggers! Not the 9 weeks they first thought. I'm having a dating scan next week though to be sure. I think by then I'll be 6 weeks.

Off to figure out how to do a ticker!

scans are pretty easy to get in auckland....esp at places like horizon etc...and free to boot! We had first one done there at 7 weeks, then next three at insight ($95 each there) then one (unplanned) with specialist on his machine, and another one in a week...so am glad they arent too hard to get into!

If you live around south of akl .....there are several places that real good and free.

I had to have a date scan too as I had no period before getting pregnant.

Congrats again!
