I've been giving Ella a bottle of expressed milk in the evenings after her dinner and shower, to tank her up for the night (half the time it gets her to sleep through). But the last 4 evenings, she's thrown a right hissy-fit for a good 10 mins or so before finally starting to suck on the teat. I use Avent teats and switched her from newborn-flow to slow-flow (#2) once I realised she was long overdue for the next size up Advice from you mums with bottle experience would be greatly appreciated! ------------- Andie |
but she continued to put up a good fight before caving in each evening. Once she does take the bottle, she polishes off 100ml (takes soooo long but she usually does it in one go though!). She had no trouble accepting a bottle to begin with - this is a recent development. Any ideas on what all the fuss is about? She's done it over fresh milk, frozen milk, warmer and cooler milk, and for both her daddy and I. Replies:

I'd say she's being fussy. I used to express for Hannah for Saturday mornings (I was working) but after a certain time she refused the bottle altogether, opting instead to wait alllll morning for me to get back! Of course it was very frustrating to DH because even though we had introduced solids by then (I think it was around 5-6mos?) she wouldn't take them either... only mummy.
Your Ella is a bit younger but that's my guess, she likes you better  If that IS the case then your decision at this point is whether to perservere with the bottle or just drop it.-------------  |

I'd say busy mum is right babies are smart she prob prefers milk from a warm snuggly mum.
Does she cluster feed in the evening? you could try to encourage her to cluster feed so she gets enough to fill her tum but it might take a few nights to build up milk supply and make sure you snack heaps throughout the day and drink heaps. Or you could just persevere with the bottle cos it does get annoying if they won't take a bottle at all when older. |

Georgia - the Closer to Nature bottles work really well for us, as Erin didn't seem to like the Avent ones, each baby to their own though.

I wish I had known about them - Charlotte used one of Jess's one day and loved it but we have soooo many avent ones that I stuck with them.

I think busymum has it right too.
I was breastfeeding and bottle feeding Amelia (sometimes breastmilk, sometimes formula). Anyway one day she simply refused the bottle. As she was really young at the time (around the same age as Ella or younger) I gave her boobie and of course she was fine. But it only really happened the once. I think I'd just keep trying with her to take the bottle. We were given a choo choo teat when we left hospital and it was great, but they only fit slim line bottles, not the Avent ones. ------------- Selina http://lilypie.com">

could it be becuase you changed her to the next size up teats? We tried a few times to do that for the girls but ended up going back to the slower ones until they were ready.. long after the recommended time frame. You could try her back on the old ones and see. If she's been fine until you changed, then i would say its that, cos all the avent teats are pretty mucht he same just bigger holes right? so i can't see a reason why she would suddenly go na-nas over something she was ok with before. ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja

| I know Addison has gone through little phases where she doesnt want to have her bottle and thats all she has known which is why i know its just a little tantrum. As for taking so long to drink it, maybe that teat is also to slow. I have only recently changed Addisons teats and it takes a third of the time for her to polish off 200mls now. And as the other ladies has said you could try a different bottle or just keep trying, chances are it will pass, fingers crossed anyway! |

I agree with busymum, I had the same problem with Anastasia, taking the bottle no prob then all of a sudden wouldnt take it from anyone, so I tried different sorts, different teats and it made little or no difference but stick with it because I gave up and it meant I was tied down more and going to the shops (30mins each way without shopping) became a drama but we did get her drinking from a straw (sippie cup) or off a spoon which worked in the mean time. She will now take a bottle again, but we are now trying to get her to take from a cup

Thanks for the advice, ladies! Ella started her hissy fits over the bottle before we changed the teats, so I don't think that going back to the newborn teat would make a difference. But last night she took to it without a tantrum at all - spent a while just playing around before she'd actually feed from the teat, but she got there without any drama. She does cluster-feed in the evenings, but it's the mornings when I have more milk than she needs, so that's why I express then and give it to her later when I don't seem to have enough for her. So I'll persevere with the bottle and see if she keeps up the good work from last night or trys to pack it in... either way I'm shoving that bottle in her wee mouth each night, like it or not! ------------- Andie |
