Hi all. DH here.
My wife delivered our third child today! After a long night of no sleep we have a beautiful little girl (third one!) She was born at 9:52am. She was 3.650kg (8lb). Both mum and bub are doing well and it was a normal birth with no intervention except for gas and manual rupture of the waters.
Labour wasn't establishing last night and the docs didn't want to induce because of DW's preggy history. She also had Strep group b infection. So we got some spiritual artillery going. (Called some people to pray.)
DW had (IIRC) 12 hour labour? or 30 depending on when you count it from. I'm sure DW will fill you in on the details, and correct me if im wrong.

Okay... trying to get all the thoughts together... Just ask questions if I miss anything.
Well as you all know I had lots of niggly BH and light contractions on and off towards the end of last week. On Thursday afternoon I had a show and BH and on Friday night (3.30am) I had a hindwater leak after some contractions 8 minutes apart. Things continued to niggle until 5 or 5.30am at which point I must have gone to sleep for about an hour and everything just stopped.
Because I had tested postive for strep B infection and the suspected leaky waters, my mw got me up to the hospital on Saturday morning for CTG monitoring to check everything was okay. It was so okay it was boring! It was looking like they would need to induce me but because I have had a c/s in the past the meds were not keen to disturb my uterus too much (it can make the scar rupture yuk). I was sent home with strong good wishes to go into labour, or else meet at the hospital at 9am Sunday. I hadn't lost much fluid, in fact mw said it looked like they hadn't leaked at all but she could clearly see from my pad that it was waters.
Well contractions did start again on Saturday about 2pm but it was about 4pm before I realised that they actually were happening regularly and maybe would settle in. They were about 5 minutes apart, really cope-able, but I arranged babysitting for the girls for the night/morning and started making tea so I could have it while I was still feeling like eating. By 6pm I was needing to lean on something, and sometimes groan, with the contractions so I was pleased to have the girls off to bed by 7pm so I could work at the contractions without having to worry about their thoughts and questions. At 8pm I called the mw to say that the contractions weren't changing or getting closer together and what should I do? She told me to take a couple of panadol, a warm bath, and go to bed to rest up for when I would need it.
So I went into the bath and got firmer contractions! DH started getting edgy about what would happen if I went into full-swing labour at home. We called the mw for a check and I was soft and 2cm so pretty good assurance for DH that I wouldn't be in full-swing for a while yet lol. After she left I went into the shower (one thing I really enjoyed during my labour with Briona) but after a little while I called DH to come in with me and hold me during contractions. I just got really emotional out of nowhere and kept saying "I don't want to do this alone". He was really good and I got through that, but the hot water started running out (I was in there for an hour) and I was getting a bit nervous! We got the mw around again at 11pm to check as to progress and I was the same so I decided to keep on at home.
We set up the lounge with me on a couch, cold face cloth, swiss ball and heat pack all nearby, and DH (on the floor) and I tried to sleep. Somehow it worked even though most every 5 minutes I was rocking against the ball. At 3am the contractions got strong and rocking against the ball or anything like that was no longer providing any relief but I was still thinking I had ages to go so didn't call the mw (I needed her for 9am anyway). Finally at 5.30am the mw couldn't stand not knowing what was happening any longer so she rang us! and got us up to the hospital for another CTG. Once that was done she gave me another VE and I was fully effaced and 4cm - the most I've ever done on my own (without artificial rupture and epidural). That made me feel soooo good! But I was pretty uncomfy and I got onto the gas about then too. That was my first time too and it was okay at first but as the contractions got longer and I breathed it for longer at a time, I started getting quite dizzy At 8am my waters were broken and I hopped into the shower with the portable gas. Soon my contractions were spaced about 3 minutes instead of 5 and I was begging for the bed and a bit stronger pain relief.

Woah that's long lol. I'll continue here cause I dunno if there's a word limit!
My mw introduced me to a new drug, Fentanyl. It took the edge off the contractions but I could still take gas to top up. It was just enough to stop making me dizzy. I started feeling Krystiana's head bearing down and soon it was time to push. Pushing wasn't so bad (except for bye-bye gas) but crowning took ages, similar to with Briona. Because my contractions were still well spaced I was able to feel and then see her head coming through, in between pushes. I tore slightly and she finished coming through on my next push. It turns out I have quite a long perineum (sorry if TMI) and that's what makes it so difficult for me in the last stage. Anyway I got a few stitches but am healing heaps better than the episiotomy last time (different places).
Quick run-down was: (all Sunday morning)
3am - established labour
7am - gas
8am or soon after - waters ruptured artificially
9.15am - Fentanyl and gas
9.52am - Krystiana born.
I stayed in the hospital for two nights so I could rest and establish a bit of understanding Krystiana's needs without the other girls around and got home about lunch time today. The girls are rapt and we got some pix tonight of cuddles - very cute! Here's hoping tonight's cluster feeding from 10pm-ish through to 3-5am will be okay for DH
Ummm what else. Krystiana was 8lb (3.650kg) with HC 35.5cm. Bombshell I don't know how long she is because they don't measure that in NZ at birth. But she definitely looks long to me, quite slender body too. She's a good little feeder so probably won't stay so slender for long .
That turned into a very waffly double-post, just ask questions if I have forgotten anything lol!
Teresa

Sounds like you did well in the labour whats that other drug like? Is it kinda like pethadine? The gas is great
|
Posted By: busymum

I'm not sure Rach because I don't know enough about pethadine. I think it's not as strong as that either. Basically I didn't feel any numbing or anything (had just one 25ml dose), I just was not taking as much gas.... hmmm hard to explain huh
ETA: Just remembered mw said she wouldn't have given me pethadine because it makes you sleepy (and I was close to pushing)

Have just had the first week check (at 5 days) and Krystiana has amazingly only lost 50g! But we measured her length as well, it's 57cm. Gosh I was so far off lol!
She is fitting newborn onesies but she's so slender (which adds to the 'long' look) that when she wriggles in her sleep, her arm gets loose from the sleeve and comes up through the neckhole

Vix I know how you feel. This is the first time that I didn't spend the entire month before worrying about it! While I was sucking the gas I said to my mw, I'm a bit worried about whether this will be enough when it comes to pushing, and she said not to worry about that yet, stay positive etc, and somehow I was able to put it completely out of my mind and keep on working with the contractions.
MWs are really good at coaching too, my mw was saying things like "okay you're almost at the pushing stage, you'll know when you feel like pushing, it will feel like a big poo" lol etc, and all the coaching like that makes you feel confident too.
If you get anxious, make sure you talk about it with DH and/or mw, they will be able to help you find your confidence again. All the best!
