I am wondering if there are any other pregnant diabetic ladies out there in cyber space??
I have Type 2, diagnosed in August and am now finding out a whole lot of information no one - GP or fetitlity specialist, diabetes nurse - told us when we were trying to concieve. The more information I get the more worried I am!

I had gestational diabetes both times, second time was insulin controlled (well supposedly) Its pretty scary some of the things that can happen aye. I was paranoid when i heard that there is a higher risk of still birth if baby goes to term. My first was born 6 weeks early weighing in at 7lb 2oz and my second was induced at 38 weeks and weighed 8lb 7oz. Both had trouble with glucose levels after birth. Its pretty rough on them, getting tested all the time but at least they will never remember it.
feel free to PM me if you want to chat or have any questions.

i also had gestational diabetes but controled by diet and exercise. And i only got it with third pregnancy.I think you have to be extra careful with your levels especially since extra sugar goes straight to baby.
I just had test today to c if diabetes gone away so will find out in a couple of days i am sure.
Any questions just ask.

Feel better to know there are other people out there - have been feeling very alone and worried as keep reading all the things that can go wrong. Have got my blood sugars pretty much under control - though diabetes nurse not happy that my pre meal readings are still between 5-6.5 instead of 4-5.5. Am eating healthy and not doing anything silly so not sure what else will have to do.
I will take up your offer to PM you ladies, probably next week.

How far along are you? what they do will probably depend on that. I know for me my levels were average but Addison was growing to big so they wanted me on insulin and my levels got way worse so they induced 2 weeks early. I think they didnt believe i was sticking to the healthy eating but i was loosing weight while 7 months pregnant so was obviously doing somethign right!
good luck

I'm only 10 weeks along. Sticking to the healthy eating, recording everything I eat, drink etc. Have to take blood sugars all day long - which sometimes hard to do when stuck in a meeting.
Off to hopspital next week to the clinic so will know more hopefully. I think the initial information is pretty scary as they seem to give you the absolute worse case example.
Fingers crossed for you Bombshell - I notice that carbs send the sugars up a bit so watch them.

i hated the finger pricking, took me ages to be able to inflict pain on myself like that. Even the insulin injections were nicer. I found eating for diabetes but while being pregnant really hard. No ham etc... so there cos salads and sandwhiches, your not suppose to have diet food because of the phen something in it because its not good for baby but its what your suppose to have with diabetes and your not even able to eat lots of fruit cos it has heaps of sugar in it.
10 weeks is early to pick it up isnt it?

Am I right in thinking you had diabetes pre pregnancy?
Are you on insulin or holding out for blood glucose control? The complications are immense but you can take measures to control them, easy to say really, as if you don't have enough restrictions on your diet being diabetic as it is without all the pregnancy stuff. My husband is Type 1 diabetic, his diet is basically a good healthy diet with good control on the carbs he takes as they convert to sugar and knock your levels up.
good luck with everything, on the positive side you will be monitored throughout so things shouldn't just drift for you without you realising

You are right I had been diagnosed with early Type 2 about 3 months before falling pregnant. All the doctors knew we were trying to get pregnanat - under a fertility specialist and taking drugs to hep us get pregnant. Yet no one told of the dangers and risks involved with diabetes. I read a little on line but it really did not go into too much depth.

I was diagnosed with borderline gd at 35weeks!! Mine was controlled through diet and daily walks. I found that carbs would definitely send my blood sugars up and so the dietician advised that my meals should be based on one part carb, one part protein, and plenty of veges....though there were times when I didn't follow those rules we found out that baby would just be large due to genetics *phew* as his measurements were consistent with my dates however he had loooong legs and a big head lolz. after birth my son's BSLs remained normal (thank goodness). Just thought I'd let you know that you are definitely not alone and not to let this get to you, yea its scary to think what could happen to bubs but remember that you can control the vast majority of the outcome, it just takes discipline

Just wanted to say for you ladies avoiding diet drinks because of the phenylalanine that I did quite a bit of searching on this and drinking some during pregnancy doesn't seem to have an effect on the baby at all. The problem is when people give it to young kids, as for some children (we are talking tiny, tiny numbers) there can be some problem with it. Also with the artificial sweetners, the only one that has been shown as being detrimental during pregnancy is one that we don't have here (can'tremember the name). Obviously you shouldn't be drinking loads of the stuff - itcan give you the runs, but in small amounts the research seems fine.

I did a little poking around when i was pregnant too. My midwife in fact all my midwifes have told me to stay away yet the diabetes clinic told me it was fine. To be honest for every article etc.. i found saying it was ok I found one saying it wasnt. I didnt cut it out completely though and everything was fine.
So what does it do to small children?

phenylalanine - can bring on or increase asthma symptoms. This can be in adults or children. So diet drinks that contain it often produce these symptoms.
It can also bring on the runs...try chewing a whole packet of gum with it in within say 8 hours and then wonder why you are crapping a lot!!!
must say that i have stayed away from equal etc in pregnancy - just in case...there is a history of asthma in family and i didnt want to risk it....my personal decision as i also read it isnt really a huge risk...

Aqua36 ... I was diagnosed at around 6wks pregnant. they didn't think it was gestational as it was 'too early' in their books. unfortunately it has stuck around.
I fell thru the 'cracks' and didn't get seen by diabetes clinic til around 20wks and was injecting from 22wks to control my levels.
Any questions, just ask! At this point, you could try taking a combo chromium supplement - mine had B Vits & magnesium and really helped. I had to get it from a naturopath though.
My levels stayed well under control with the injecting (after each meal, plus protophane for overnight), and I was able to go to term before they induced me. Like Robyn's (my2angels) kids, Amelia also had trouble with her sugar levels after birth, but they came right and she is fine.
I'll try and pop back in here off/on to see how you're doing.

Things seem to be going well at the moment. Though very scary to start with so much information and worse case sernarios, there are some bonuses. Eating healty, exerciing and the support of the diabetes nurse, diabetes doc, specialist and mv all of whom are fantastic. They very realistic - eg you cannot be perfect all the time but to try your bet.
They decided to give me insulin before evenng meal and the protophane for overnight, because no matter what I did the morning reading was 5-6 most days. That seems to help.
The registrar I saw this week was weird - telling me I have to exercie for 30 minutes every meal - though everyon else saying the 40-50 minutes a day I am doing is sufficient. There is no way this is practical - work fulltime, as a teache there is no way I get lunch times as such, its too hot after work and am knackered by the end of the day.

Obviously a male and never been pregnant or he would know how tiring it is just being pregnant let alone exercising!!!
My levels went all weird when i started on insulin, had heaps more raised levels and quite a few lows which made me feel terrible. They kept insinuating that i must be being naughty with my eating but i was lossing weight so that proved i wasnt.
I dont think its very common to have ongoing effects from it, just means a little extra work for bubs when they arrive but the long term effects are pretty rare i think.
And I agree, its great all the support you get aye. People would pay big money to have a diatitcian etc... like you are given. I know with mine i was able to ring her all the time for advice she was great.
How far along are you now?

Yes defintely a male!
I am 15 1/2 weeks abd losing weight as well. The detitian said you can stay with her after the baby so thats cool. Plus it is a healthy eatin plan. I find silly things send my blood sugars up, especially if have something within the 2 hours. I had a nectarine the other at 5pm (having just got from the hospital appointment which can take up to 2 1/2 hours. So my before dinner reading was higher than normal. Then yesterday drank a glass of sparkling grape juice abot an hour before the reading, forgetting that it may affect it.
How did your baby cope at birth and after? Did the baby have any highs or lows?

I know what you mean. I actually had good morning results when i had eaten a bowl of ice cream after tea the night before, the nights i didnt have ice cream my morning levels seem to be crap! It was really odd.
Both my children struggled with thier sugar levels for a few days but i was bottle feeding so that helped sort it out a little. Kobe was in NICU anyway cos he was 6 weeks early, both were really big for thier gestation, Kobe 7lb 2oz at 34weeks and Addison 8lb 7oz at 38 weeks (induced) Apart from the birth weight and sugar levels both were sweet, had no on going problems and as horrible as it was for me when they had to do all the heal pricking for levels they didnt even seem to notice but I did feel really really guilty that it was my fault they had to go through it all. During the birth was ok, I just had to monitor my levels etc... Kobes heart rate kept dropping but i dont think that was related to the diabetes.

Thanks for that makes me feel better. I've been warned that they probably will induce between 36-38 weeks.

haha, I thought the registrar must be male too! I saw a male doctor mostly, and he said 'odd' things to me about exercise - by that time I was too tired to do much at all and I told him vacuuming the house (at 38 wks preg) HAD to count cos it sure as hell made me sweat!
And don't you love those hospital appts where it seems to take 2 hours plus to see everyone?! By the end, I was totally peeved and one day was going to walk out if it took too long - turned out to be one of my shortest visits!
Hope everything is going well for you today.
