OKay, now this is the third thread about Taine.

Anyway, today as you know was Taine's birthday. Mum rang as did Dad and my nana, but hubby's parents who live 10 mins down the road - did not. They came to Taine's birthday on the weekend, bought no present, no card and didn't even ring him today to say "happy birthday". I fiund it so weird. Hubby said that they don't even ring him for his birthday. He gets presents from MY mum, dad and grandmother, but not from his own.

Now I don't want to sound materialistic, but I really find it weird that they don't give birthday, or it seems xmas presents..at all.

Liz the more I hear about these's people the more weird they seem. I think they are the ones with some serious issues.

IMO That is weird!!
I could understand if it were a religious thing or something but surely they could just buy for them even little token presents until they're old enough to understand?
And gosh, a phone call is free for goodness sake!

Just as an aside, lol at your ticker for Taine 'Taine is old'

My hubbys parents and sister is a bit like that. they have only really bothered because i have pushed the issue in the last few years. They do give presents to the kids but not so much with each other which is odd to me because in my family when its someones birthday that automatically means a present and a dinner and that includes the brother in laws birthdays. Odd when its my family ringing to say happy birthday and his own family dont. My BIL's family are the same aswell, they dont even send my sisters kids presents and i would be surprised if they even knew when the birthdays were.

Are they tight?

not religious, and not particulary tight either usually. I mean for Taine's party we were having a bbq and when we were checking to see if the one we had worked, FIL said, "well, if it doesn't, we'll go out and buy a new one", so not rolling in cash, but not too badly off either. It seems more like they don't consider it important. Mind you, they didn't give Jake anything for either of his birthdays so I guess at least they are consistent. MIL has said she doesn't believe in giving toys - and granted the boys do have a very extensive toy collection (presents from my parents!), but as I said, surely a phone call, a card, something to acknowledge that yesterday was a special day for Taine. they actualy came round last night (at 9;30 - i was in bed watching Gilmore Girls) and STILL said nothing about Taine's day. It is really bizarre and I can't wait to move! I did get along with them, but obviously that was helped by the thousands of miles between us!

Oh gosh! I remember you said the same thing when it was Jakes birthday! I dont know what we said to you re this issue!

Man that is mean!! How rude!

You hubby does not seem to be to bothered by it so I guess there is very little you could do. But you could express your opinion to them, very casually!

I have the opposite problem, Zaara gets given too much. But looking at your Inlaws...I am not complaining!!

Poor Taine! Big hugs to your little cutie!

It is weird cos soon the kids will be old enough to be so excited about their bdays and feel a bit gutted when there isn't a present. If they don't like giving toys you think they could start an account or something but I suppose you couldn't really say anything.

That really is mean, and frankly they need to be told that it's yucky for grandparents not to acknowledge birthdays of their grandchildren. Do they buy presents at other times, like just randomly? Or are Taine and Jake going to never have anything that they can say their grandparents gave them???

Wow that's a real shame... and kinda WEIRD (going with the consensus here!).  They might not care about gifts at all-  not everyone does.  My hubby doesn't - he'll give a big wedding gift but that's about it!  He just doesn't really 'click' with the whole prezzie-buying or even gift-getting thing - he'd rather do something else for a person.  He's generous, but just doesn't buy prezzies if he can help it.  Are they just not into presents at all?  Do they expect gifts?

Thank god it's the same treatment for both boys... whew!

My FIL isn't really into presents, but still gets them, just picks something extremely practical - like for Xmas it was an umbrella for our deck and a new kettle (because our old one was leaking).

I think it's really poor form of them, and someone needs to bring it up !

Brought it up with hubby who said maybe they forgot. I asked him about their birthdays when they were little - i thought maybe it was just their family thing, but he said they always celebrating things- and then got a wee bit defensive so decided to let things lie. My parents are ALWAYS buying things for the boys and DO go a bit crazy (just discovered Taine has 30 t-shirts - that fit, not counting long sleeved shirts or tank tops, or ones in the wash) - so maybe he feels a bit bad that his parents don't. ni don't knwo! it's weird. another weird thing is their concern when the boys cry. Taine was crying when MIL came in, and she said "oh, he must be sick"., i said "no, he's tired and hungry, i'm getting his tea now" she said
"looks like he's coming down with something, I'll make him an appointment"
isaid "no, he's just hungry and tired - he refused to sleep today"

she left it then, but i could tell she didn't believe me.

I think my main problem is that I'm so worked up about everything that it wouldn't matter if MIL came in and said "lovely day isn't it" I would get annoyed!

Oh Liz.....I would be the same! So much crap to take from your Inlaws! And dont you just hate it when hubbies get all so defensive about their family! I feel the same way ...I cant even bring my hubbies family up with a negetive tone, and he gets pissed off......I hate that but if things really annoy me I just carry on...too bad if he does not like it! I am a no nonsense type of a person and hate keeping things inside...it its me up!!

I was trying to be supportive to you on this post but instead turned into a vent! Sorry hun....but I know Exactly what you mean!

Aren't families funny my MIL and 4 BIL's are all like this. I douht they even know when each others B'days are. My two oldest are now 11 and 9 so I've spent years wondering about this birthday thing they have. Although I must say they have always been into Xmas. Some years they buy presents for birthdays some they don't we just never know what will happen on the day. Every birthday we have a special family dinner for our girls and invite the in-laws but that doesn't mean they will bring presents. My girls are used to it now and don't really seem to care (they get heaps from us anyway). I just say some people don't celebrate birthdays like we do. I still buy presents for everyone of their kids on their B'days I'd feel stink if I missed them out.
As for my side of the family we only buy for the children as my sister has six kids and us grown ups decided that we really didn't need presents. I'm pretty happy with that. We were very spoilt kids growing up and I think Birthdays and Xmas are all about kids really. But we still buy for My Mum.
