My best friend is coming over from Sydney this weekend and I'd like to go over to Waiheke for the day. I've looked at doing a wine tour (fun for me I know!) but they all seem too expensive, so instead I think we'll park up at a nice restaurant and have a boozy lunch for the afternoon.

Does anyone have any good recomendations? I haven't been over since 2000. I really don't want to go all over the island looking for somewhere, and looking on the net doesn't give you a good perspective of where places are on the island.

Also, what's the best way to travel over there? Foot? Bus? Taxi?

TIA

We spent 2 nights there after the wedding and travelled by taxi and bus really easily.

Many of the wineries have great restaurants, so you could look at them - there are places where there are acouple next to each other, so you could do a mini self wine tour - like only 2 or 3 - but that would be fun! So I would check out the wineries if I was you, to see what they are offereing in terms of food and drinks - some wineries only do platters, so you want to check that they do proper food.

Can't remember which ones we ate at exactly, but we didn't get to Stonyridge (hope that is right - the one that has the big parties for new years and things like that), which is supposed to be great - it was closed for a private function when we were taxi-ing around. DIdn't eat at any great restaurants other than those attached to wineries, found the ones in the shoping area awesome, but really casual places.

One place that did look great is the one on Onetangi beach - don't know the name, but it is right next to the beach (my fav beach in Auckland!) Seemed pretty nice, so a search around Onetangi and food might bring it up!

You could do a search for the visitors info centre on Waiheke, they are fabulous at helping sort out things like this ! My mum lived on Waiheke for a year, but I'm having trouble remembering the names of anything... I might give her a call tonight and ask, and get back to you

Mudbrick is great, and if you want something with great foor, but a little more relaxed, try Nourish in Ostend!

We came back from there on Monday!

We also went to Vino Vino (good food, bad service)and Stephanos

Cool. Nourish sounds good.

I'm a little worried that Mudbrick, Stoneyridge etc will have weddings on this time of year, so won't probably chance heading there.

I'm looking forward to going over and just walking about. Haven't been over there in ages!!!

Id recommend taking the bus and also booking in advance if you are going on a weekend..or be prepared to wait for a table...and wait and wait...

esp book for places like the vineyards or mudbrick etc...

and no boozy lunch for you I hope!!!
