firstly

Jaxon is now almost 5 months old and he loves tv. Do you think that movies with violence etc in them wil affect him now? or would he not remember at this age?

lol i feel sill but he sits there and watches the tv like hes glued to t.

lastly Jaxon has two teeth come right through. Do I need to brush them with baby toothbrush and paste already Wont they get a build up of plaque already now that he is on solids?

Thanks ladies

umm.. I didn't let Ella watch tv until she was over one.. and only baby einstein videos. I still don't let her watch anything with violence etc and I don't think there will ever be a time that I'm happy with her watching it! Sorry but I think your answer is obvious, yes, it will affect him now. Especially if he continues to watch things like that.

How about you try putting some music on for him to listen to instead? We don't watch much tv so there was never a problem with her watching adult orientated programmes.

Sorry to sound harsh..

I have tried to limit "adult tv" as much as possible from as soon as possible. DH LOVES his shoot em up, smack them about tv and I have asked him a few times to change the channel or turn it off while the girls are around. They will be exposed to violence early enough thru life without us helping things along.
With the teeth, my plunket nurse said to use muslin cloth or face cloth to start with, with a smear of toothpaste on it. You can get (have seen in K-Mart) teething sets that start with a rubbery knob thru to a tooth brush, 2 or 3 steps. What I found best (from bout 6-7mths) was just a baby toothbrush with smear of paste and give that to the girls while I brush my teeth so they get to know when, where, how etc and they also get more time to explore the mirror hehehe

it is worth getting a soft baby brush and giving it to him even just to suck on to get used to...and while you are bathing him or while you are bathing is a good time to let himsuck on it...

as for tv...i would try to avoid it...and if not have plenty of videos / dvds around to put on instead...video what you want to watch etc...i agree no need for him to watching that sort of stuff yet...

I have the teeth one, till they are about 1 try to leave out the tooth paste, start with a soft cloth at regular times during the day (like before bedtime or after meals) and slowly introduce a toothbrush as their teeth come out of the gums.

When Jake was a baby he watched all kinds of stuff - BUT he wasn't a tvkid. he'd look briefly and then go and do his own thing really. I honestly don't think it makes much differnece at that age - but thats just me - studies may show otherwise. i DO find that Jake is influenced by stuff on tv now though. there is this video he watches where the girl is describing a monster by pulling a face. Jake has been pulling that face for about three or four months now and I've just figured out where it's from. On the positive note, Jake sings classical music from "little einsteins" and on a negative note - when people are sleeping he yells "one, two WAKE UP JEFF" at them (wiggles). Personally I would try and get him some educational videos. I don't know if they do any good so young, but you'll feel better and can show off at playgroups and stuff talking about how Jaxon knows his Beethoven from his Bach.!

With teeth, now is the time to introduce a baby toothbrush but just with water until about 1yo.

With TV I noticed that Hannah at 6mo was getting agitated by the sound of a violent cartoon DH was watching. Even if they don't understand the picture, they are aware of things like yelling and even the intense music as they get a little older.... just my feeling on it, but I'm really careful on what our kids watch because they don't understand about pretends much yet.

Hmm would have to agree with BUSYMUM.

I always had lots of Wiggles or Hi5 or fun music type videos for Paige and I am the same with Blake. Except baby Einstein is what he loves and I am happy for him to watch kids stuff in the morning with Paige.

Paige (7) only saw Lord of the Rings for the first time 3 weeks ago and she hated it and had nightmares so yes I believe they are influenced.

And I guess logically..Kids are able to follow and copy dancing and singing from TV easily so they can pick up the negative stuff too - Well in my logic that make sense???

Maya's not really a TV kid either - she likes it on but drwas/colors/plays at the same time and always has. She never really had opportunity to see inappropriate stuff on TV coz she goes to bed at 7pm, but then we do watch the news and that can be a bit dodgy!

As for toothbrushes, I think Maya was about 1ish when I started brushing her teeth, and she teethed early and had quite a few teeth by then (she had a full set including 2 yr molars by 18 mths, Thank God she wasn't a bad teether!)

I found Jack was glued to the TV early on and so was I so now I won't turn the tv on until after 5pm so most of the day we just listen to the radio and play.

Plunket told me to start brushing twice a day with adult toothpaste as soon as there are teeth but Jack didn't get his til 8 months and our water isn't flurodated (sp?) so that might be why
