I've got my first midwife appointment this afternoon. Just wondering what I should expect to happen? I was told I'd be there for about an hour?

You usually fill in all the forms that need to be done. You do the usual pee test and then she's check your BP and weight (some don't do this). Fill in forms for bloods and maybe swabs. She may also try and find bubs HB.

OK, going to have a large glass of water now (I always seem to get stage fright!)

Well there is probably slight differences from mw to mw, but roughly:
* take down all your personal details and family health history
* have you pee on a stick to confirm no probs (this will happen every time from now)
* confirm LMP and EDD dates
* she may press around your abdomen a little (bare tummy but underwear in place) to feel the size of your uterus.
* if she's really keen she may try to hear the baby's heartbeat with you. You can hear it from 12 weeks and sometimes before, so some mws don't try before 12 weeks so as to not worry you if they can't pick it up yet.
* go over the standard "if you have a problem with me" procedure.
* if you are struggling with ms or anything else, she can offer ideas and/or medication for that.
* make an appointment to see you again in a month's time.

If you have any questions for her, write them down now or you're bound to forget.

Have fun! Being pg is so exciting!

You don't need a lot of pee, just don't empty right before you leave home (or work)

Thanks Becks, I forgot about BP. Your reply wasn't there when I started typing - shows how long it takes me with one hand

You might not do a pee test - I didn't do one with my mw. Becasue it is your first visit she may send you for blood tests (rubella immunity, some others including HIV if you choose), and you may do your pee test there.

Good luck!

I didn't do pee test either(was 7.5 weeks when i went) ...have to every time from now on..everyone else in waiting room did one..lol.. I just had run down of standard other stuff and had already had bloods and didn't need swabs..I'm so surprised there is such a variation between places and midwifes!!!

So proteins in the urine - what causes that? Just thinking if I should avoid eating anything the day before just in case - lol!

lol I'm not sure you will have to ask someone who knows a bit more aobut it:) but the midwife came out and looked at it and said ah you are fine..test for urinary infections too..I'm pretty sure theres nothing you can do before hand:)

I'm pretty sure proteins in the urine is not necessarily caused by something you ate - directly - but that it hasn't processed properly for some reason. Anyway protein the urine can be an indication of pre-eclampsia or UTI, I forget which - either can make the baby come on early.

I'm surprised you haven't had your urine checked yet Miss, it's really standard procedure (and really easy, I dunno what your fuss is Deb! ) Maybe your mw doesn't do it until 20 wks My first mw used to measure fundal height from about 20 weeks, my current mw measured it from about 26 weeks.

Protein is for toxeima
Blood for UTI
sugar for diabeties
They test for all three, but usually isn't a risk till third trimester so some don't worry about it, others just try to get you into the habit of giving a sample.

It went really well. I didn't have to do a pee test, at my clinic, they don't start doing them till 28 weeks.

Wow, lots of paper work!!! She just kept on turning pages and writing more stuff down!

Had my BP done and it was very low, so have to get up slowly etc and not rush around (I've always been a fainter, so kinda makes sense).

I asked lots of questions too, forgot one, but I'll just do a search on here!

Becks if you go to Midwifery Care, I think all those mw's do a pee test every time from the first appointment (10 weeks or whatever)... that's what I've had with two of them so far.

Yeah Janet was there last time and this time shes got her practice with Brigid so they do alot of the same things that were done there. I'm heading a nasty track to pre eclamcia again so i'm now on daily visits.

And also if your not sure of your exact due date she will send you for a scan just to measure baby and see your due date actually is. But before that your do all the other staff like sign a registration form with your Midwife and fill all your medication history its mainly paper work for first visit

With both my pregnancies (my son and this bubs) iv done pee tests everytime and i started my visits at 8 weeks. I had 4 different MWs each time too and they all seem to do things the same

My MW this time (cant remember last time) doesnt like to do the heartbeat thing till after 14 weeks so iv only just had it done last week.
