we went to turn our carseat to forward facing...and once it was put in...while the back was stable the front was able to move all over the place.

this concerned us so much that we turned it around again...so my question is....is the carseat suppose to be able to move like that?

Nope, and if it's anchored in properly it won't. Check that the tether strap is bolted to the roof or floor (in a hatch) properly and that the strap is pulled tight. Also if you have 'indents' in your seats, the carseat needs to sit in the indent otherwide it isn't stable.

Hope that helps.

OH I have a car seat question too. We are looking at buying a new car (because ours is twin turbo and uses a ridiculous amount of petrol!) I have been looking at a toyota rav4. Its not very big really, but for the amount I use it would be fine (we have another car we use on weekends and to go away etc, so my car is just for me during the day) Question is are you allowed to put carseats in the front seat?? I know you have to be carefull of airbags. I thought they had to be in the back seat, but I have seen cars with them in the front. So are you allowed to do that? Is it safe?

They say not unless there is no seat's left in the back And only forward facing car seat's not rear facing they must go in the back. I htink htat is right anyone feel free to correct me if I am wroing.

Yep, rear facing seats in the front are a no-no, as are any carseats at all if you have airbags. That's not a legal requirement, just a safety thing. But it's not recommended to put any child in a carseat or booster seat in the front seat - there's a reason why it's called the 'suicide seat'

My friend has a Rav 4 tho and she puts bubs in the back and leaves the passenger seat tilted forwards on a semi-permanent basis (unless she has another adult in the car) so that she can get bubs in and out without too much hassle. And I kind of do the same with Maya as I have an 8 seater and she is in the very back which means leaning over the seat to get her in and out.

nicola-ann, my in-laws had a rav4 and that used a ridiculous amount of petrol too! i'm not sure what year it was or the cc rating but they sold it as it cost too much to run...

Dam about the rav4. Hmmm will have to think of something else. And about the carseat thing.. thanks guys! I would not like to put Alex in the front, actually why was I even thinking of doing it?? Must have been having a mummy brain moment. I was thinking I would do what you said Emma. (have the seat tilted forward) Does your friend have enough room for everything in it? We havnt taken one out for a drive to see how our buggy fits. But then again if they use heaps of petrol I don't want one!!

Re: the rav 4 - my stepsister had her son in his booster in that and it was fine in the back seat. Although it was a two-door actually very easy to get in and out of the backseat compared to other two doors.

check out the consumer sites and the ministry of transport sites, they often tell you about consumption and crash reports. consumer you may have to pay for however.

I don't think my friend has ever had a problem with spacein teh Rav 4, but then she doesn't have a big 3 wheel buggy which seem to be the main issue with boot space.
