Hi all

I think one of my fillings has fallen out and I also think that I have developed pregnancy gingivitis - bleeding swollen gums and it's kidn of uncomfortable to eat anything. Can I do anything about this? Can I go to the dentist or should I just wait till after I have the baby?

Thanks all

I'm having my wisdom tooth pulled out tomorrow as it's so severely infected and decayed.   They do say that the best time to go to the dentist while pregnant is in your second trimester as it's risky in the first and the position you lay in in the chair isn't good for you in the third trimester, but if you're not in there for too long it would be ok.

The bleeding gums is totally normal. I had it in both pregnancies and everything went back to normal afterwards.
Its caused by the increased blood volume apparently.
I would def visit your dentist about the filling though, they can replace them safely and even have anesthesia that is ok for preggies. (I had one done in my last pregnancy)
Good luck!!

Ditto what Mel said If you think your filling has fallen out, at least make a phone call to your dentist. If you wait for baby to come first it will be a little while before you can make it in for a new filling because of baby's feeding schedule

Go to the dentist! I don't think if it hurts you should wait. In fact I had my regular check up as ususal during this pregnancy just to make sure all was well. I needed one filling - that was all the dentist could see as we could not do a scan. I also had my teeth cleaned and have not had any probs at all.
So go and see the dentist is what I say - better get it checked out sooner than later as they will know how serious it is better than anyone else! Good luck!

I was hoping you would say "NO - you can't do anything about it". I'm scared - I hate getting bad news and I hate the dentist but I will go. I'll book an appointment for this week.

Thanks everyone

jsut remember to tell them you are pregnant (though they should be able to tell now) as you can't get xrays.

The bleeding gums, I have had that as well, but used to get it every now and then when brushing teeth anyway. Try using warm water as it often helps.

Couldn't get an appointment for this week so have to hold off till next Thursday. Told them i'm pregnant and they can still fix up my filling and made a note about my gums. They recommended the warm water with salt thing SB so I have started doing that too. I hate going to the dentist.

ive been a dental assistant for 2 and a bit years and yep u should definetly keep going to the dentist while pregnant, just make sure to tell them so they dont do xrays

and if u go after bubs is born and ur breastfeeding be sure to tell them that too, cos the dentist can let u know when itll be safe to feed bub again as the anaesthetic can affect them

Just thought I would let you know that I had my appointment yesterday and had a huge hole that he kindly fixed up for me as well as giving my teeth a very good clean - especially around where my gums are swollen and bleeding. Because the swolleness and bleeding is so bad I guess I haven't been brushing them as well as I should. It was sore but I kept telling myself that I was going to be pushing a baby out my fufu in a couple of weeks time so should just harden up. I really wanted to cry though...

He found another two little holes that I need to go back and get fixed up. There is also a funny lump behind my teeth that he said is a pregnancy thing that should go away after I have bubs but if it doesn't them I will have to see a peridontist (sp??) to have it removed. Do you think that will be very expensive??

Thanks everyone for your advice.

periodontists are specialists in gums and cleaning, cos they are specialists some can be relatively expensive, so ask your dentist to referr you to the cheapest one ,cos it will probably only be one area the periodontist needs to do you should be able to get a local anesthetic in that area cos it will be quite uncomfortable if the dentist goes under the gums.

I know what u mean, i had no pain relief in labour (not by choice) and thought i could chop off my hand now and it wont faze me, but the thought of the injection at the dentist and im running for the hills...

Aren't we funny with the whole labour and pain thing!! Thanks for that information. Hopefully the lump will just go away by itself... Somehow with my luck, I don't think that it will.

I had my wisdom tooth out on wednesday and it feels SO great now.

As for x-rays, I TOLD them I was pregnant and they could see that I was pregnant, and he covered me in a lead blanket and shoved the x-ray thingy in my mouth and took it before I could say anything..

Isn't it the best feeling after you have your problem causing wisdom teeth out??? It's the best!!

I sprained my ankle really badly when I was about 33 weeks and they xrayed me with the lead blanket on too. The dr said that baby would have done all his developing by then and any radiation that may get through wouldn't cause any problems. Hope thats reassuring for you although I am surprised that they didn't ask your permission first.

argh it annoys me when dentists take xrays with out your permission especially if youre pregnant, one of our dentists would do that all the time , its not there place to make decisions for you...even if they do think its necessary, at least they put the lead blanket on you

no problem about the advice, teeth are my job (joy)
so feel free to ask any teeth questions and i'll do what i can to help out
