Swaddling seems to be only thing that gets Oliver to sleep BUT he hates it - do other babies like being swaddled and not spend twenty minute fighting their strait jacket?? Its also a catch 22 as although it calms him to go to sleep he wakes up mid sleep and then starts to fight against it again and so...wakes up fully and thats the end of the sleep. Whereas non swaddled IF he goes to sleep he has a better sleep....also plunket says not to swaddle tight after about 6 weeks but as always OTHER experts say to do it for two months. you would think there would at least be a consensus on that!!! having two choices is doing my head in as i have lost confidence as to what i am doing each time. 5 more weeks until the promised land of three months!

My first son Jake HATED it, so I never did - from a newborn pretty much. My second taine, loved to be swaddled and I've only just stopped about two months ago really - he was 10 months, and only because it was getting really hot. why not try a safety sleep?

I think just go with what your baby is telling you. Lachlan loved being swaddled and we have only just stopped doing it over the last week, as when we were away on holiday he kept getting his arms out, and we were also safety sleeping him too and it would get up around his neck and it looked awful. When we had tried not to swaddle him early he just wouldn't settle.
Is Oliver not getting overtired before you put him to bed and that is why he is not settling easy? Just an idea.

I still swaddle my girls. Mercedes fights it half heartedly but settles quickly but Sienna fights it tooth and nail. When I go in to get them after their sleep she is always unswaddled so she obviously fights it in her sleep, but yet she has to be swaddled to get her to sleep in the first place. The only night she has ever slept thru she woke still swaddled.
I am going to see a sleep consultant on Monday so will let you know what she says about swaddling.

Hannah didn't really get swaddled from 2 weeks on because it was so hot! I didn't have any problems. Briona on the other hand wasn't too fussed being swaddled or not, but definitely in the 3-6 month mark needed to be swaddled if we wanted her to sleep at all. Krystiana doesn't always get swaddled now, sometimes it's too hot, sometimes I can't be bothered wrapping her before feeding. But she doesn't seem to sleep better/worse with/without it. It's a baby-preference thing.

Thanks for replies - we too are using a saftey sleep as well as only thing that stops him getting his arms out which then wake him up. have come in a couple of times to find it up round neck which I agree is a bad look (and part of why keen to ditch swaddling).
Look forward to hearing what the sleep consultant has to say Emma,
cheers,

I found the girls don't seem to get it up around their necks when the cot is flat, when they were younger and I had the head elevated for reflux they wriggled down inside it. But Sienna still houdini's her arms out even thru the safety sleep!
Off to see the sleep consultant shortly...
