Hi all

Is there a better brand/type of breast pads to use? I need to get some for my hospital bag and am a bit overwhelmed at all the different types out there.

Thanks

I asked this in the one about which baby product and found that Johnsons are the best. I've got a box of them and some samples of pidgon and treasures to try as well. Don't forget that there are samples in the bounty pack to try as well.

I liked the Johnson one's with the adhesive bit on it that sticks to the inside of your bra, keeps them in place.

You should get a bounty pack when you are at the hospital. It has a whole pile of samples and vouchers... a bit overwhelming at first actually but it gives you something to beat the boredom

I didn't know J&Js did adhesives?? I use Pigeons for the adhesive.

I got washable ones from baby factory, but found them useless cos I did and still do leak heaps, and it would always go straight through the pad, my bra and top in no time! I found the johnsons ones do this too. I only use the swispers brand ( purple box) ones from pack n save or warehouse cos they have plastic back and so never leak!I did find that I couldnt use these in the first few weeks tho cos of the plastic on back they are a bit more stiff than the other ones, and not good for sore nipples.
I never got any in my bounty back. The contents varys depending where u are, and when u have bubs I think!

i prefer the washable ones as they are so much softer on sore nipples - i have two types, cotton and hemp, and both are pretty much the same although the hemp ones are much thinner so dont stick out at all. sometimes the cotton ones can be seen through my tops.

i always used the johnsons ones and never had any problems, i wasn't a huge leaker though so maybe they're not so good if you leak heaps.

Hmmm - maybe I just won't buy too many of one kind. I might get a few different ones. Can you get washable ones at the supermarket?

I picked up heaps of samples at the P and C show - so have two gel pads packs from mama something or other (?), 2 cotton washable packs, and some johnsons ones - all free...
and then bought a box of the "loving" ones - cheap and a signature brand to take with me to hospital and for days following...and will then decide from there...
still not leaking so who knows whether i will need many of not??? I havent been able to try them out yet...

I hated the adhesive. It just pissed me off... far rather prefered the non-stick ones.

And I would love to use washable ones next time. Save a fortune!!!

Gel pads... Sounds scientific

I'm not leaking yet either so have no idea and don't really remember what I was like with Christopher... I think, like you Bombshell, I will just try to get a selection and see how I go.

the cheap j&j ones worked the best for me I didn't like the sticky back cos I pull them put when feeding. Washable were useless but I saw these ones that are silicone and put pressure on your nipple so they don't leak, not sure how well they would work tho it seemed like a good idea.

Bombshell I never leaked until the week after baby is born, and I'm also not leaking much this time around. I think when I was expressing, even once a day, it was screwing my feed schedule a bit and increasing my milk, so I was going through them much quicker. I haven't tried washables this time but I did then and went right through.

I'm going through 2 a day at the moment, because I mostly only leak a little when latching. But with Hannah the used to be drenched about 4 times a day.... varies a lot!

i agree!! I found the adhesive annoying...and not always adhesive either! I'm using Outragous! ones next time from Greenbeans.

And I agree that it will save a fortune!

I hated the adhesive as well, coz I took them out to feed and coz I have 'generous' boobs so they never sat right with the adhesive.

I used the cheaper, non adhesive Johnsons ones for the first few weeks and once my spply settled switched to washables.

well with the gel ones...i went and got the pack..they are mother mates and they are called hydrogel breast feeding pads - and say they reduce nipple soreness pain and cracking...and you can use them up to a week before discarding...says to use them for "nipple trauma" associated with breast feeding...

ok so not so much a breast pad for leaks as such but thought people might be interested in them...
The lady at the show gave me two packs of two which was really nice of her - my boobies were HUGE at the time tho so she probably felt sorry for me!!!

I found the disposables heaps nicer for sore and cracked nipples - the washable fabric ones tended to stick a little, and also disposables are great if you're using a lanolin cream for a while.  I love the Loving Touch ones from Countdown, though I don't bother with the little adhesive strip either.

I liked pidgeon, as they didn't get soggy and heavy in my bra. I had washables as well, but found they leaked, and yu could see them under my tops, where as the pidgeon are more form fitting. They have a super absorbent core like san. pads do, so no wet. My friend has these little plastcky gelly type flower things, that sort of "collect" the milk, I think they cost her about %40, they are form fitting to, you just "tip:" the milk out, and rinse them off. Can't remember what they are called, will ask though, as I am tempted to get some.

i bought two HUGE boxes of pigeon from Japan (seriously a box lasted me three months and only cost $20. why do we have to pay so much here???). I loved these. I remember hearing about some pure wool washable breast pads which were supposed to be the greatest. breastmates???

I've got them, and to be honest, I found them leaky and cold when wet (you know, if you're out and about and leak..)plus, really obvious under clothes (I hate that b/pad look..)

The consensus (sp?) seems to be that disposables are better than the washables. That surprised me cos I would have been inclined to get washables - from a whole reusable should save money perspective - before reading the responses on here. It is great to be able to get advice from so many different people.

I always used J&J and yes had a few leaks in the begining (when I came back to work) but I had enough milk for Africa. I have 11/2 boxes of unused of these sitting at home....feel free to PM me and I will send those to you.

I used and liked Pidgeon the best.. I tried the loving touch ones but because I'm not all that well endowed (barely filled a B when breastfeeding ) the edges were a bit crinkled and made me itchy!!

Wow everyone is completely different!

I had such bad issues with my nipples (cracked and bleeding and just not good at all). I used J&J to start with and quickly stopped because they were sticking to my nipples and my god, it was absolute utter hell trying to get them off. So I switched to Pidgeon and they were great (I agree with the above where it said ultra absorbant and didn't feel heavy). Had no leakages with either of Pigeon or J&J. Then I bought some pure wool washable ones from Baby City and found them great! Though perhaps it was due to the fact that I didn't leak too much.

Yeah I swore by the pidgeon ones too- will be stocking up when I come back to visit! They are the only ones I used that didn't leak or feel damp/heavy when full

Same here KH25. Maybe part of the prefernce is based on our sizes - because it will make them sit better.

No, the ones I mean are called Lilypads, and they are little flower shaped things, very very discreet, look a little like flower shaped nipple plasters!

I have to say that I have been using the samples I got from Treasures and their ultra form are really nice. Haven't stuck to me at all and you can't tell I am wearing them at all. I can't say I have seen them in the stores but i'm going to be looking out for them now.

Hey Becks... did we get the same samples??   Johnson's Untraform ones i the purple pack - nicer than the usual Johnson's ones.  I just tried them and think they're heaps nicer than the Loving Touch ones (which I'd been such a fan of!).  I'll be looking out for them in the shops - but I get the feeling I'll be only buying them when they're on special.  I also tried a sample of the Pidgeon ones and won't be buying them ever!  And Leish - it might still be worth getting some washable ones to save on $$$ and the environment... I use the washable's overnight and some days, and disposables other days.  Gotta say I much prefer using the disposables.

Yep purple pack ones. I thought they were great. Next week when I go shopping i'm looking out for them as I found them nicer than the johnson's ones as well. I think they will be a on special thing only as well. I do like the Loving Touch ones.

I was given a few different ones to try when bubs was born, and hated the stick on ones (Pigeon), as they bunch up, but loved the Johnsons ones in the pink box. There were none in my bounty pack.
