a baby typically start trying to feed themselves? Ellas always trying to grab the spoon when i feed her now and im petrified that shes gonna fling it EVERYWHERE haha

Also shes a HUGE eater and i need ideas of what to feed her. Can i start blending up what we have and giving it to her? Like some chicken well cooked and veges? Wont have sauces on it when i do it for her!

When rhiannon was that age....i just gave her blended veges with meat in it and finger foods...by the time she was 8mths old she was eating what we were eating.

i use to give her blended potatoe, pumpkin and kumera with chicken or beef with gravy...she loved it

Yep she's definitely old enough to want to hold the spoon etc. Some mums try having one spoon each for starters. As for what you're eating... simple answer is yes! Mix them up with gravy/water/formula for starters to get the right consistency. Kazzle recently had a thread on this with heaps of ideas.

I'd go with the one spoon each if Ella is keen - that way she gets to have a go and yo can make sure she is actually eating something!

And I'd say normal family meals blended up are fine too as long as you grab hers out before you add salt, pepper etc.

yep - family meals are ok but without the seasonings...at that age i doubt she will feed herself much but the sooner they get used to a spoon the better. mashed/pureed veges are great and dont be limited by what you consider standard mashing veges, try beans and other greens etc. essentially any veges can be mashed.   i used to add pear or apple to all sorts of things cause both boys loved it so apple and kumara were a fave. also avocado on its own or mashed with apple or even banana. the kids loved that.

Jess, I've had that problem with Amelia from the day we started solids (about 4 and a half months)!! I give her a spoon now, usually with no food on, and when she opens her mouth for that one, I have the spoon with food on it, ready to go. haha

Caitlin has always grabbed at the spoon too, I never thought about giving her her own spoon! I think we'll give it a go with one for her and one for Mummy IN THE GARDEN THOUGH!

hehe emma, it never hurts to be prepared.

mikey won't eat unless he has a spoon but then when he does have one he doesn't do anything with it except shove it in the food. i'm starting to despair that he'll ever get the idea. maybe starting as young as ella is will mean she's feeding herself sooner.
