Finally we have a reason why Isla has been so unsettled since birth.
Finally after 4 (pretty horrid) months of getting up to her up to 5 times a night, sometimes for hours on end because she just wouldnt settle,...after she was misdiagnosed as having colic,... taking her to Dr's and other health professionals only to be told she's healthy and Im do everything right,... me being scared to take her out in public because I cant settle her when she screams ( a stupid man told me to shut her up, in a cafe when she was 3 weeks old),.. constantly questioning my ability as a parent,... DH nearly losing his job and having to work 2 hours extra a day unpaid to try and keep it,..people questioning if I have PND,...me wondering if Im mad,...me feeling guilty that I am the reason she is unsettled ( a "friend" sugested this),...family and friends and others saying I should give up bf,...if my milk was "better" she wouldnt be unsettled,..me feeling guilty that I still am not enjoying being a Mum,...my relation with DH getting more and more strained,....

Finally,..thnaks to the lovely ladies at the Northshore Plunket Family centre who actually took the time to listen to everything I had to say about Isla's behaviour etc,...finally Isla has been diagnosed with Silent Reflux.

She began a trial of Gaviscon on Tues after me taking her back to the Dr just to get her checked out medically *again* to rule out anything being wrong, before we try other things. I told him that the plunket nurses (in auck, not the stupid ones I have here) thought she might have reflux.
She is now going 5 hours at night between feeds and not waking inbetween feeds at all ( this is like a miracle!), she has stayed asleep in her buggy and capsule after we have stopped ( has never done this before). She is much happier, her eyes look brighter,...my beautiful girl is no longer in pain.

A gigantic weight has been lifted of my shoulders. I now know for sure that I wasnt the reason she was so unsettled,..that I have been a good Mum,..that I did the right thing not giving up bf when I really really didnt want to,.. that my gut intinct that something was wrong was corrrect.
Finally my little girl can enjoy life,... and I can too.

Thanks for listening

Yay Kellz - I can almost *feel* your relief thru your post! Reflux is a horrible thing, Mercedes had it and it is such a struggle for them.

I'm so glad to hear that the gaviscon is working and she is more settled, and that you are getting more sleep. Big, big hugs!

Thanks everyone for your comments and support

There have been lots of little changes in Isla since she started on the Gaviscon, but after a couple of days of going 5 hours between feeds, she's now feeding around 3 1/2hrly in the night again. Shes not waking inbetween tho, and is mostly going straight to sleep after the feed.

Im trying a low dairy, low acid diet to see if this further helps things. She is meant to only have max 6 doses of Gaviscon a day, but when I dont give it at the feed around 3 pm, she gets grizzly etc,and Im sure shes in pain again. We will be going back to the dr on fri for another review.

Jess, how long did you have to try the Gaviscon for, before Ella was put on losec? Did your GP prescribe it or did u have to take Ella to a specialist?

oh yes poor you and her. Been down that track too its so not nice. But its such a releif to have someone listen and give a diagnosis aye. What happened with us and the track most docs go down is to try gaviscon, then try ranitadine then if that doesnt work try losec. Gps can perscribe it but alot wont unless they child has been seen by a paed.

Yep we tried the ranitidine that made her worse, then we went on the gaviscon for AGES and then she sorted grew out of that and then the dr put her on losec and we went and saw the specialist I think shes pretty much grown out of it now shes back on dairy and has no meds and is doing SOOOOO well No spilling, no screaming! I think its coz she sits all the time now YAY

Oh yay! Its really good that Ella no longer needs meds and is doing well
I doubt my Dr will prescribe anything other than Gav cos he already said he doesnt know much about it. Hmmm I wonder how long it will take to get in to see a Paed? Maybe I should go back to the Dr *again* and see if he can make a referral sooner rather than later!

See how u go it does take upto 3 weeks to see the benefits of the gaviscon. If there is no improvement after that then i would go back

Perhaps because your GP doesn't know much about Isla's condition he/she should be refering her even sooner (or perhaps do a bit of research! )

I really hope your little girl gets sorted soon, they go through so much in their lives

First of all lets bust a few myths.
You can successfully take up to 12 Gaviscon a day (assuming your baby is over 4.5kg) without it having any effects on your baby, there is also some wonderful tips on: http://www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz/MedicalTreatment/MedicationwithDosages.htm - Medication with Dosages That will help with administering the powder.
All you need is 3 days of it working correctly to assume that it is doing the job.
Olivia had relief immediately. It is a wonderful feeling to know that you actually have a smiley baby, so big hugs girlie, you were a wonderful mum to begin with but it is nice to have that affirmation from your kid, right?
I had Olivia successfully on Gaviscon for 2.5 months before her symptoms started coming back again, this is because she over produces stomach acid, so she had to be moved onto Losec with the Gaviscon. She should have been on Losec much sooner to reduce further damage to her oesophagus and vocal tract. Please do make an appointment with your GP for a referral to a paediatrician.
Different drugs work differently for each kid, there are no ones that are the same or different. I know for sure that Olivia's reflux is structural where as there is also allergy related reflux as well. Both are treated quite differently.
All the best sugar!

Oh gosh Jess, I thought it would work quicker than that! We can definatly see some benifits already, and the first night she was on it she only woke once it the night ( for the first time ever), but she hasnt since. I guess I just want everything fixed now! I dont wanna wait

Thanks Peace! Yep maybe I will go bug my GP *again* today!
I do give Isla 12 sachets a day (2 at a time), but she has more than 6 feeds a day, and seems to be in pain after the feed or 2 when I dont give it. I skip in at the afternoon feed cos thats when she is awake longer after a feed.

Ella did take awhile to work on it. Not every baby is the same. I would say try it for a few more days but i was told on the reflux boards it can take upto 3 weeks before it will be working to its full effects.

Be aware that with the gav she may get constipated aswell.

Cool thanks Jess. Yep her bowel motions have definatley changed!

You might find that with the introduction of the Gaviscon she might eventually be drinking for a bit longer at feeds and drink to eat, instead of soothe so that might cut down on the number of feeds.
I was giving Olivia bits of bottles, 50mls here and there and as soon as the relief started she was skulling back 150mls like there was no tomorrow. It did take time though.
Jess is right it can take up to 3 weeks to see the "full effects" of medication but that is the full effects, relief should be immediate.
Good luck with your appointment.

Well we went back to the Dr yesterday and he has referred us to a Paed specialist. Will apparently take about a month before we are seen. In the mean time I am going completely dairy and egg free, on top of the low acid diet. Initially for 2 weeks, then we will trial Isla off the Gaviscon for a few days.

Peace yep we are already finding Isla is feeding for a lot longer than she was. Shes still quite fussy, and arches her back, and comes off and cries during feeds, but its not so bad.
