Did anyone else see it? It was about paedophiles (sp?) and it was awful to watch. I cried through most of it but the worst part for me was the guy that went to the house with his little son in tow. That just made me sob...

Totally freaks me out about Christopher.

And how sick they are, convincing themselves that these children want to have sex with adults and that their parents and other awful people are denying them the right to do so... WTF!!!! How completely sick is that. I was absolutely mortified that there were these people out there.

The rabbi was just... I don't know what to say. It was just sick and scary.

I saw it too and it was awful.

Not meaning to down play the terribleness of it - but did anyone else think that the list of things or the way people act to "watch out" for with kids (ie someone that might be doing nasty things to them...)  a bit generic....off the top of my head I think that they were:

"a person who wrestles with or tickles your kids"

"a person who tells dirty jokes or teachs your kids rude words"

"when your kids are wrestling or playing with other kids - are they touching inapproiatley"

This is a much better list - http://www.oprah.com/presents/2005/predator/safety/safety_signs.jhtml - http://www.oprah.com/presents/2005/predator/safety/safety_signs.jhtml

I just felt that the ones that they mentioned on the show could so easily be applied to just about any situation - and will further the really sad stigma that a lot of guys wont play with kids (in their family or their friends kids) because they are so worried about what people might think.

I have a good friend whose husband wont even go in the bathroom when his neices and nephews are being bathed (even in their house) - not because he has any sort of problem at all, but because he is paranoid about society. This guy gets really embarrassed if kids take their clothes off an run around the garden at a BBQ or anything like that - again NOT because he has any sort of problem, but because he is scared that if he smiles at a kid he could be accused of something....its so stupid..but completely understandable.

Dont get me wrong - the people that they were talking about on Oprah were horrific and deserve to be sent to prison, they were predators and it made me feel ill.

EHM - at a guess, Extreme Home Makeover. I guess that because I bawl from opening to close with that!

Glad I didn't see Oprah, I am very teary today. I agree with SimSam though, that wrestling and tickling one is one that limits guys from hanging out with kids sometimes.

Yeah I thought it was a pretty generic list too but I guess it's a good place to start. That was the bit that I was waiting for through the whole show - how can I protect my children???

Yeah - I thought the show was all focussed on "busting these guys" - which is a GREAT place to start, but they didnt really talk at all about how to protect your kids.

I would also have liked to see them cover the angle of "how we deal with this problem as a society" - how do we stop these guys from even getting to this point, how do we change a culture that constantly sexualises young people.

Whilst I am having a rant - did anyone watch "Close Up" tonight with Christine Rankin and Sue Bradford talking about the new anti-smacking laws. I thought Christine Rankin hit the nail on the head when she said that we need to focus on the other serious problems in our society like drug and alcohol abuse, poverty, and neglect - rather than turing everyday parents who 'smack - not whack'  their children into criminals.  I personally wont be smacking my kids, but thats a personal choice of someone who has never been a parent (am on the countdown now though!!) - and I would never presume to judge someone who did choose that approach - but wouldnt be able to stand by and watch someone "whack" their kids - thats different.

Sorry - rant over...its clearly been that sort of a day for me.

Yes, it was pretty gross. Got me thinking if that kind of thing goes on in NZ more than we think it does???

God I hate those shows- they always make me so scared and sad. Over here they just caught a guy who had climbed up a ladder into a 9 yr olds bedroom and molested her- they caught him as he grabbed another 8 year old off the street a few days later and people heard her screaming in the house.

It just makes you want to cuddle your kids close huh. I just make a real effort to always trust my intuition. I have a person who is in our life (that we HAVE to have a relationship with) who I don't feel right about and Charlotte is never ever left alone with him without DH or I around. He may be completely innocent but its not something I'm willing to risk.

I think its sad how men have to be so careful- can totally see both sides. My cousin is a teacher and actually stopped and started lecturing at uni even though he loved his job and was so good at it as a collegue was accused of being inappropriate with a young girl. It was enough to scare him away from working with children. In saying that, I would never use my child as a pawn to prove a point becuase its just so not worth the risk- that kind of thing ruins kids lives.

Its like those parents who let their kids go the MJs Neverland to prove they trust him.

the deputy principal of one of the high schools here has jkust been sentenced to prison for kiddy porn. Apparently he had an amazing record and everyone said what a great guy he was, but he had over 1000 images ranging from 3 years, and the stuff was sick that the judge felt he had no choice in sentencing jail. they had a lovely pic in the papaer and everything!

an ex cop who went to law school with me was also found with porn on computer...not sure what happened but think he was diverted or something as he is still practicing...

we see a lot of this in cyfs matters..unfortunately...makes for some very hard reading and usually needs to be accompanied by a strong coffee just before lunch so i can clear my head after!!!

the porn thing is a bit funny though, there was a big thing in the news awhile ago about the police having porn on their computer, but it was an email joke that even I had received, basically drunk people that had "accidents" which I would not have considered porn.

As for pedophiles, I think they are actually sick in most cases, something is not quite right in their heads, especially if some are saying the children want it.

Gosh yes those men made me sick to my stomach. To see how eager they were to meet up with the fake 14 year olds was shocking. The most disturbing for me was the guy who got naked...and then the next day turned up at the restaurant.
Good on that programme for exposing these horrible men. But then again I'm sure there are female predators out there but we hardly ever hear about them.

Ok that makes me glad I was out today and couldn't watch it. Things like that are too close to home for me as my GF did 'yucky' things to my older cousins and was finally put in prison for it when I was 9. We just thought he was being extra nice to us. Everytime I hear about all that stuff it just makes me cry (don't know if its just hormones - have a lot of them at the moment - or not).

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!
