I just heard http://stuff.co.nz/3969418a4560.html - this on the news, the Doctors are saying they believe the baby will be able to have a normal life, no defect, etc! That's one very wanted baby, and look at the feet - I am gob-smacked.

Imagine the hell those parents went through when they realised at 21w that the baby was coming. I am so, so glad for them that the baby has survived.

the feet picture is amazing though...

Saw that on the news, the mother just looked so proud and maybe even a little shell shocked. I have to say i agree with you bombshell my first thought was "wow, but what problems is the poor little tike going to face later on". But I'm guessing you would just be so relieved that you wouldn't care!

Isn't it incredible!!! Although I don't know how they can say she won't have any problems - maybe they can say she won't have any physical probs but developmentally and even behaviorally (sp?) they couldn't possibly know just yet! But it always breaks my heart when they have a "cutoff" for viability. Imagine a tiny baby born trying desperately to breathe on its own and a doctor says "No its too early to be viable" when it is obviously proven that they can help them and they do survive! It was scary to think that if I had Ashleigh 10 years earlier or so, she probably wouldn't have been "viable" either. And even though she breathed spontanously at birth would they have not helped her? Sorry that was a bit of a rant! Bit too close to home for me I think!!!

Oh my gosh I had no idea that that could happen - I'm talking about a child in Ashleigh's position not getting help 10 or so years ago.  That's incredibly tragic.  I just briefly saw that article on the news, and thought that baby is a living miracle.  Regardless of whether or not she'll have health or development problems, she's gonna be a walking inspiration.

I was just totally in awe of this tiny being. She is a definite fighter. It goes to show that miracles do happen. Maybe she'll have problems as she grows but for me personally that is nothing compared to the joy and happiness you get just from looking into your child's eyes. I pray for all the very best for the couple. God has truelly blessed them. I'm just truelly amazed by that little girl

I saw this on the news this morning (I think Sky UK can't remember it was early) and they had other babies born at other weeks and some of the problems they have (from memory 22, 23 and 24 weeks). None of them major problems now but they do think that this little miracle will have some problems as well. Then on the news tonight they had the ages at when you can abort in the states - I was shocked at some of them  some states you can legally abort right up to 40 weeks  so not right.

Yeah something like 11 states in the states don't have a cut of time to abort and that is just wrong. They say the birth of this little girl is going to open the debate over there about getting all states to have 1 law and making it legal to abort under 20 weeks only.

I think in NZ it is legal up until about 24 if for medical reasons - ie findout at 20 wk scan that there is something terribly fatally wrong.

It's kinda scary - i spose though, what parent wouldn't want to have their child survive or have the chance to have it survive.. still with all the problems they face and all they have to go through and the potential problems.. ie behavioural problems or learning problems, lasting physical effects or brain problems etc.. it's about ethics - whether ethically its ok to keep a baby alive even if we have the means to do so.

one of my close mates from my old work who was due 5 or so days after me with xander, found out bad news at her 20 wk scan(babys skull had not formed properly and the brain was growing outside of skull) and some kidney probs too i think, anyway she was made to go thru a normal delivery.this was here in palmy.she was only 18 yrs old to and her partner had JUST turned 18 too.I still cant believe how they both coped with such terrible circumstances at such a young age.I THINK her other option was c-sect but i heard she wasnt allowed that choice.

I'm guessing they may be referring to no cleft lip, organs in right place, etc... but it is a rather wide statement.

I saw in the paper today that they decided not to release her and she is staying in hospital for observation for a few more days.

i think the actual statements were that there are no obvious signs of anything wrong yet...but then they cant be sure...

one thing - the 40 week thing is a bit of a misnomer..the states involved actually leave it to themedical professionals discretion as to when they can do it...without a time frame...

the baby was apparently a very much wanted IVF baby and so i guess from that perspective - and only imagining what they had been through before - the doctors may have felt more than ever that this was a baby to be saved...am sure all the circumstances of their past etc will come out too...and imiagine she is beign kept in so the parents arent stressed by all the publicity and possible problems with the abortion debate raging over there...I mean there are deaths around that issue when people get anstsy over it all!!!

Mum's waters broke at 27 weeks with my youngest brother (about to turn 21) and they told her if they couldn't stop the labour he had only a 10 % chace of survival. Yet babies born at 27 weeks gest now often do really well and go on to have few or no complications later on. It's amazing how fast technology develops!

(My brother was eventually delivered by elective caesar at 36 weeks after Mum had 9 weeks in hospital flat on her back to stop labour from starting.)

Wow Emma, thats a pretty cool story! Yeah they told me a 26 weeker had an 80% survival rate so 27 weeks would be even higher nowadays

Yep, apparently she went to the hospital expecting to have him and lose him (her waters broke at 34 and 35 weeks with my other brother and sister and they induced within 24 hours coz of infection risk) and the OB said he would keep her in and give her ventolin and some other drugs to keep labour at bay and get her to 30 weeks. Then at 30 weeks he said "one more week" and so it went on till Mum had had enough of being flat on her back in the Sydney summer heat with no air con in the hospital (it IS 20 years ago!) and Dad had had enough of being at home with 3 under 4 and pushed to have him delivered. She didn't have any more kids after that tho coz they were just getting earlier and earlier and the risks were too high.

Can you tell I've heard this story just a few times

Wow Emma that is amazing my waters broke at 24 weeks replenished on a week of bedrest then again at 28 weeks and replenished with another week of bedrest, in hospital both times then I bleed at 30 weeks and had my miracle baby girl, we are going to have one more and at the back of my mind is a tiny worry that I could have another premmie.
That wee girl is a real fighter I pray that she has a long and happy healthy life
