Kalem who is 5 started school last year in may and loved it. But since last week he says he hates it and doesn't want to go and he now clings to me in the mornings and today he started crying when i left which just broke my heart and i cryed in the car (preggie hormoanes probaly). I have tryed talking to him about and he says he just hates it. I try and ask whats the cool things he likes and he tells me swiming, fitness etc and then i ask him what he dis likes so we can try and fix it and he says i just don't like it. i really don't no what to do as he has always loved school. I asked the teacher how he is doing and she says hes normaly quite good but he has to sit by her  sometimes because he seems to want to play and muck around if hes not we never had any problems like that last year and his year 0 teacher said he was great kid and had a good attention span etc. Any advice would be great?????????

Thanks

As a teacher myself (secondary), I know kids can react very differently to different teachers and he may just not click with the new teacher this year. Unfortuneatly he is stuck with her for the whole year so you need to work with the teacher. I would suggest meeting with the teacher again and explaining what is going on at your end (e.g he loves fitness etc and he has been saying he hates school) and what you can do as a team to solve the problem as its not just your prob or the schools.
He may also be more unsettle knowing that there is another baby on the way and that he is missing out on the cool stuff at home.

I was just thinking that, the missing out on things. I know there are days when JB wants to stay at home simply because abby does and he has just started school and she's 2. So maybe it is a case of him worrying about being left out when baby comes or maybe even a fear of baby replacing him.

I hope you are able to settle him in, I feel for you leaving him crying, I had the same issue with abby at creche this morning, not nice.

Sorry I can't be more help!!

Aw Ellen, that's tough on you both.  Just a random thought...... how is lunch-time going for him?  school is tough if kids are having trouble adjusting to a new class = new friends (and the teacher might not be so aware of that if that's the problem).

Hope it gets better for him really soon ...

Yeah he could be having a difficult time adjusting to a new teacher, or he may be having trouble with friends. Maybe try and delve into those areas when you have your talks with him. I'm sure you will found out the problem soon enough.

Great advice ^^

WHen he was put in his new class, were any of his friends placed in there too? It can be really hard for some kids to form new friendships, so maybe that is part of it.

Also, is he in year 2 this year? Some schools he would be, others he would be in year 1. If year 2, it is a huge change in terms of expectations on learning and he could be feeling the pressure there. That would be exacerbated by the teacher making him sit by her when he hasn't had issues in the past.

I agree with all of the above. It can be such a big change for kids esp after the xmas holidays and finding themselves in new classes and with different teachers. My 6yr old Mercedes has been asking me to home school as she states she "hates school". I have since found out that some of the kids in her class have been calling her fat and a little boys keeps asking her to show her titties when they are at swimming. I was down there like a rocket and have called a meeting with the pricipal as they have a no tolerance to bullying, well nows time to enforce it

Sorry for highjacking your posting, Goodluck with Kalem and I hope you get the school thing sorted. Keep us posted...

We are going through a similar thing with Harry at creche. He has been in creche since he was three months and generally really liked it. Then about two months ago he started to say he hated creche, no one played with him etc etc etc. When we drop him off he wants us to stay which we can't and now has started being really naughty by kicking, spitting etc. This is really unlike Harry and all I can think is that something has happened which has made him hate it so much. I feel guilty because he can't stay at home because I have to work....it makes me very sad but then if I quit and did stay at home then I don't think that will help in the log run either
