Okay im sure this has been done, but did a search on 1st birthdays and came back with nothing

We had a BBQ for Andrew's first birthday. There was only 3 children at it his age and they ate the BBQ food like the rest of us. I think (from memory) that we had some lollies and chippies for them as well and they loved that. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

I just looked at what Briona was eating soon before her birthday and planned around that. And I made her a birthday cake, iced with marshmallows all over the top (ah so easy!). I think I went with cheerios and chippies. Big uns are better than chippies, less likely to choke on corners.
I guess it largely depends on whether you have mostly 1 year olds or extended family (grown-ups), as to whether you put out food especially for them (who won't remember the next day!) or just part of what everyone else is having. Here's Briona's 1st birthday cake...  -------------  |

We did a cake for Andrew and after the photos and singing of Happy birthday we let him touch it and he had a ball with it. We did make sure that he didn't attack the whole cake so there was some for everyone there. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

for Jake's first birthday I decided that no junk food for me, i would make everything - little spring rolls, home-made sausage rolls, chicken nuggets (bear in mind I was living in japan!) - never again!!! the kids LOVE cheerios and copious amounts of sauce, watermelon is a big winner, sausage rolls were okay, but not so much, popcorn, marshmellow/fruit kebabs were a BIG hit!
as for games - i gave the kids bubble mix and they loved that most of the day. |

There is a few good ideas in the latest Treasures, I am going to do the teddy bears picnic idea I think! With those marshmallow balls, fairy bread, cheese and pineapple, cheerios, chippies, pizza and some fruit and veges with dip! ------------- DD1 May 2006 DD2 March 2011 DD3 August 2012 |

We just had Emma Rose's first birthday party this past weekend (she was 1 on Monday, but the party was Saturday). We had a big bash as it was also celebrating my having survived the first year of motherhood (a big deal, as I never thought I'd have kids!). Anyway, we had some kids there and got out the paddling pool for them to mess around in, as well as having kid-friendly food and little goodie bags for the kids with age-appropriate things in them (stickers, $2 shop toys, party hats). We had only finger food (except for the cake) -- chicken salad on vol au vents, spring rolls, heart-shaped scones, sushi, brownies, chocolates, that kind of thing. The best decision we made was to have paper plates and paper napkins, and plastic utensils -- there was very little in the way of dishes to do. We also made it BYOB, and provided juice and soda, so that helped a bit. As for the cake, well, we went a bit mad and had the lady who made our wedding cake do Em's first birthday cake, so it was pretty special. She also made a wee cupcake for Em, which we let her eat -- she gobbled it right up, and it saved the big cake from her messy hands! My husband also made a DVD with all the photos we've taken of Em from the first year of her life, and had it playing on the TV throughout the party. And after the bulk of the guests had gone home, we had a barbeque for the remaining family members -- there were 50 people at the party but only about 10 stayed for the barbeque. All in all, it was a blast. And I'm never doing it again. Well, maybe not for a few more years, at least! We're doing a birthday special for one of the upcoming OHbaby! newsletters, so are keen to hear about your kids' birthday parties, and see photos of course! PM me if you have any great ideas! |

| Try and enjoy the day and don't stress too much. Don't forget photos. Jacks bday was a very stressful day next year it will be very low key. |

kazzle, mikey's first birthday was just a family lunch. i had lots of finger food plus some potato salad and lots of cut up fruit. it was mostly adults but by then mikey was eating pretty much anything so food was pretty easy.
hope everything goes really well and you all have a great day (take lots of photos so we can all see). ------------- |
