We have an old cabinet - say 50cm high, two door open thing - which we don't want anymore but when we were in the middle of clearing it from the study to the garage, Hannah decided that she would like to set out the inside of it with various toys and picnic set pieces.

So I have decided to make it into a doll's house for her - on the inside anyway. But where do I start? I will eventually get doll's furniture and am also thinking of a false floor halfway up (so it will be two-storey). But what else? And how would you decorate the walls (paint directly, paint then glue paper/card, wallpaper it?)

Thanks for all ideas!!

I have a dolls house which i scored from our school gala last year for only $10 (then saw them selling on Trademe for almost $100!).

Some rooms have those cork tiles as flooring. I think they are pretty cheap from places like Mitre ten. Carpet squares would be nice in some rooms, the real thin stuff that a lot of classrooms tend to have at schools. It also has wall paper which I actually think is contact, like the kind your parents used to line the cutlery draws with! Nice and easy to put up.

I have great intentions to do it up for my baby girl...........if I have one!!! At the moment it's taking up space in the garage.

you can get that thin carpet stuff from some warehouses or go to carpet show rooms and see if they have any off cuts. I would just get some mdf from the hardware shop to make the second floor. even maybe drill some holes and put those little things that hold shelves up in bookshelves that way she can remove the second floor if she wants to and it would make it easier for cleaning. For the walls if its wood that wont peel then i would paint straight onto that, just get some test pots or maybe wallpaper it if you can be bothered. Contact stuff would work if you can get it on there easily.

Model shops also do dolls house stuff...as do craft places and the like. Check out the american sites too for dolls houses cause they go all out over there and you will pick up some great ideas.

go to home stores and ask for wall paper samples - sometimes they have old boosk they will give you for pretty cheap or might be selling off tester pots etc.

I might just paint the whole inside white (lighten it up without getting too awkward)... MIL was just here and can give me some old House and Garden mags, also some carpet left-overs.... think I'll put some pictures up on the walls, plus tv and maybe fireplace.

We got some business card size malteka (wood for desk) samples the other day which we no longer need. Three of them but I'm wondering about incorporating them somehow?
