Hit a cat would you stop???
My pussy cat got hit by a car yesterday and he is in at the vets waiting to see if he needs an operation. The people who came to my door and told me were not the people who hit him but some people who were passing by. i would definitely stop. i think it's so mean if someone doesn't, the cat could be hurt and need help.

OMG! I would def stop! It's prob because I have 2 cats of my own and would be devastated is one was run over and the driver did not stop!

if i did i would do my best to find its owner door knocking around the neighbourhood, gee i would feel terrible!!! 2 of my cats have been hit, one costed $800+ for a major op on its leg, and the other (its brother when we moved so different house) was hit so bad that he had to get put down  which costed us lots too (had to have xrays etc...to check) the cost of owning a pet i guess, still an apology would of been nice if they could of. i understand sometimes it isnt easy though as cats wander the neighbourhood and you cant knock on everyones door.... hope your cat is ok linelle

Yep and i would take the cat straight to the vet and bother about finding the owner later. Our cat got run over and died last week (the ppl just left him there). Very very sad he was 10 years old and our first baby. He had always been so good about roads (and its not like we live in a busy place).

i dont know if i would..... if i was driving at night with the kids in the car and i hit a cat i prob would keep going. poss i might move the cat off the road and call someone (not sure who - the police?) but as to canvas the neighbourhood to find the owner - no.

I would stop, kids in the car or not, because I know how much it would upset me if my pet were hurt on the road and I didn't know about it.

I stop along side the road quite often when I see an animal lying down to make sure if it is really dead or not. I dont care who or what it is. (okay lying. I am terrified of snakes so dont go near them.)

I think it is so irresponsible not to stop. Why or how could you leave a living thing in the middle of the road or even to the side, and not care about how much pain that animal is going through. A quick call to the SPCA is all it takes.
When our cat got killed the lady knocked on our door after asking a neighbor and she was in tears and was so apologetic, I felt so bad for her we actually brought her some flowers a couple of days later to say no hard feelings. If you rang the police they would probably laugh at you - better to ring the SPCA. I would and always have stopped for animals, whether they have already been in an accident or are just playing "chicken" with the traffic. When I was still at uni, I found three cats on the road in the space of a month in my old neighborhood, none of whom anyone had stopped for... was completely heartbreaking to have to tell the owners.

I lost my own cat from being hit by a car she came home with mega internal injuries and ended up going back to where she was hit and dying i was sooo heartbroken!
Mum has lost heaps of cats to cars and not ONE has fronted up! |

I would stop - it would break my heart if I did this (family cats lost over time). If the cat was dead I would ty to find the owner, if injured I would go straight to the vet first.
One of my mums cats was hit and left and the people who found it took it to the vet where it had to be put down. They answered an add in the central leader to let her know and while it was so sad, at least she knew that the suffering didn't go on too long. That kindness has stayed with me for ever. -------------

Am so sorry to hear about your little cat - I hope that they are okay. This must be awful. I cant imagine how I would feel if one of my fur-babies was hit by a car. I had an awful experience about a month ago, I had my 2 year old nephew in the car, and we hit a cat - it bolted out straight in front of me, and I tried to stop, but if I had swerved I would have hit on-coming traffic and with my nephew in the car I couldnt take that risk. Basil is going to be okay. He has a fractured rib and has a collapsed bone in his face. He still has his little squashed up nose (he is a persian). The vets are reading up tonight whether they will have to operate or set the bones but because he is only just 1 they may just fix themselves in time. He is still in the vets but we might have him home tomorrow.
The lady who was driving by that stopped to tell me actually came to see me today to see how he was so it that was really nice and to be able to say thank you for stopping again was great. I personally don't like cats (just not a cat person) but I would still stop because they are still a living (or were) creature that someone cares a lot about. So if I was in that situation, which I hope I never am as it would just break my heart, I would definitely try to find the owner or if all else fails call my friend who is a vet nurse.

So glad your kitty will be OK. Mine got hit just under 2 weeks ago, driver didn't stop. A lady who was walking by came in and asked if it was our cat and helped us look around for him. So did our new neighbours which was one way of meeting them I guess..
Jimmy's fine, luckily tumbled under the car and ran out. Just a scraped nose, leg and eye, no internal injuries thank god. He is my first born so I would be devastated. I had nightmares about it for a week

If I hit any animal I would stop and I have stopped a couple of times after seeing a duck or something be hit and not dead. For a cat if it was dead I would move it to the side of the road prob not look for owners unless it had a collar with phone numberas cats travel a bit further from their houses. For a dog I would knock on a few doors. At night I wouldn't look for owners.

If I even realised I had hit a cat in the first place (not that it has actually happened... I hope not ) in the past I may have stopped and looking a bit helpless and maybe knocked on the first door I saw to see if it was theirs.... but now I would ring SPCA.
But that also depends on screaming child in car and nighttime etc. Definitely would be more aware of the cat after reading this thread tho. (Me and animals aren't the best of friends at the moment) |

I would stop, but to be honest, I don't think I'd be able to get out of the car. I am pretty highly strung, and I would not cope at all - I once ran over a stupid bird that didn't fly off the road and it took me hours to calm down afterwards. So if (God forbid!) I ever hit a cat I think I'd probably just sit there screaming/crying/hyperventilating like an idiot until someone with half a brain stopped to deal with the situation. Willie hit a dog once on SH 1 coming up the Bombays. It was dark, raining, and they had roadworks on the other side of the road so had narrowed the highway down to two lanes. If he'd tried to stop the car behind would have hit us for sure, if he'd swerved he would have hit the oncoming traffic, so he really had no choice but to just keep going. We couldn't pull over anywhere close either. That really, really upset me (didn't help that I was already cross with him about something else so I flew completely off the handle at him) but in hindsight he did the only thing he could do at the time (being a truck driver he's trained to react in situations like that on the road). ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)
