Hey guys, Haven't been on for the last few days, so thought i should update you on our dramas. Jayde has only been gaining 100gms per week for the last 4 weeks. Plunket is'nt worried but i am. I know this isnt normal and she has flatlined if you look at her plunket book (Alyssa was putting on about 200-250gms at this age per week).
I went into our family centre yesterday to get some help. They weighed her and she had only put on 2oz in 4 days. Then they got me to feed her. I was doing everything right she just screamed or refused to suck when she went on. The last time i feed her was at 440am and she refused to feed until about 11. At which time i asked them if they had a breast pump for me to express into and then i could give her a bottle. I expressed about 50mls and she gobbled it up. They told me not to feed her when she is sleepy or asleed as they dont feed well. But at least she will take the breast then. Doing it their way she refuses all together. Grr. I went home so frustraited and sad, thinking i had wasted my time.
Rob's gone into town to buy me an electric breast pump today so i can give her a bottle after feeds at night at this stage.
grrr. I just felt that plunket wasnt taking me seriously. Im going to see my doctor on monday maybe she will have some suggestions or may be able to do tests or something to see what is wrong with her. Silent reflux has been mentioned by my plunket nurse so may need to go on medication for that.
ANyway who said no2 would be easy.

I feel for you so much. I had the same dilemma with Paris. She was born a good weight (for our size) and yet she just didn't thrive and gain weight. It was about the same stage as you are at now that things started going wrong with breastfeeding for us as well. What you have described is what happened at every feed for us, from about 6 weeks onwards.. to varying degrees, sometimes i would have a day of sucesses, but usually that was followed by many days of failed feeds.. so yes, i would wait till she was pretty much asleep because she would resist less. All i can say is, get help, if plunket is no good (a few people I know have found the same thing) perhaps get in touch with your hospital lactation consultant? maybe you could get referred through your gp etc. Make sure you keep trying, and asking for help until you get solutions that work.. it gets very disheartening when you go somewhere for help and come away feeling like maybe it's all in your head. we went down every road possible with Paris too - reflux is a very prevalent prob in Mike's family so we were quite worried about that as well. I'm worried about the same thing happening with this one, almost to the point where i sometimes question whether or not i should even try. but i will give it a go, and think maybe if it doesn't turn out, I will cut my losses much earlier. however, I can only imagine how hard it would be to have had sucess with my first.. then problems with the second. Hopefully this is just a phase baby's going through. I hope everything works out for you. do what you have to do to keep your baby healthy, but also remember that your sanity is important too! Good luck.

I just had a look back at Sophie's well child book. In her first 5 weeks she went from the 90th percentile to the 50th percentile, putting on 100 - 200 grams a week (not for lack of milk on my part). From there she managed to stick to the 50th percentile.
I know it's hard, but try not to stress too much as bubs will pick up on it.
Hope you work out what my be causing the poor weight gain

I can empathise Maria, Maya was fine as a newborn but at about 4 mths stopped gaining weight and was eventually diagnosed as 'fails to thrive' at 8 mths old. It was a long hard road getting a diagnosis tho, I was fed every single excuse from "she's just got a fast metabolism' to 'some babies just grow slowly' and it wasn't until she ended up on the 3rd percentile that anyone would take notice.
In saying that tho, Jayde was a healthy birthweight, so it is possible she is gaining slower and will stay around average weight. But the best advice I can give you is to do what you think is best. Don't let anyone second guess you - you are her mum and you know best.
Good luck!

Thanks for the support guys. She seems to be feeding better today, maybe its just me being hopefull. Anyway its nice to know other people have been in the same boat and that their babies have come out fine. Its hard not to worry though aye. Anyway ill get the GP to check her throat and ears etc tomorrow. Thanks again for your words of support its just good to know that someone is listening.

You won't be lonely and isolated Janine - you have us to moan to!
I remember when Maya was sick in hospital and Willie was nowhere to be seen, these wonderful ladies on here were so supportive. It was great just to feel like someone was interested coz I was pretty lonely and depressed, and my 'perfect' baby was turning out not to be so 'perfect' at all. (But of course she is )

argh!that is so scary!
mind you, i nannied for an indian family, and by 9 months their little girl was gobbling down the hottest curries with her mum and dad. her nickname was "curry baby" simply cos she would refuse everything else if she has the option of hot food. (just the smell of it cooking was enough to give me hot flushes and eyes water)

Maya has fries
She first had them at 9 mths when she was in Starship. She was really underweight and the dietician came to see us, and we were looking out the window of her room at Macca's and the dietician said "you know, it wouldn't hurt that girl to have a few chips. Might put some weight on her".
She loved the chips, although I did feel really guilty giving them to her, and expert did tell me to do it!
Now she only has Macca's about once a month but considering how many foods she can't eat, she doesn't get too many treats so I let her have Macca's occasionally.

yeah, paris is a chip fiend. anything starchy... pasta, noodles, potatos, chips. 9 months isn't too bad for noodles.. they can be a nice alternative for potatoes etc sometimes. only thing i hate about most fast food places chips is 1) the fat content.. and 2) soooo much salt! but yep - paris had "donalds" for the first time a few months before xmas... (up till then we couldn't afford it) now, she just eats the chips, scrounges some of my sundae, then wants to play... so basically.. she's a normal kid. lol.

Sophie likes chips - as long as there's plenty of tomato sauce. I don't mind her have some junk food as she is such a good fruit eater. I often have to tell her she can't have any more as she has had so much.

yep, paris loves the sauce.. she dips her whole hand in and eats it by itself.. i'm mean, sometimes i just don't give her any, otherwise she eats it all and wants more.. just the sauce, not the chips. lol.. actually i think emma said about Maya doing the same thing on a post a while ago.

I had a girlfriend who was always very "my child won't be having any junk food at all apart from fish & chips occasionally". That all changed when her girl was big enough to let her opinion known and now she is allowed chips and pizza and stuff. Everything in moderation I say. Angie LOVES chips and stuff but she is the same as Sophie and eats tons of fruit. She has even be known to turn down a chocolate biscuit so she could have some grapes.

yep,. we keep it pretty balanced with paris, it helps that daycare give fruit etc for morning and afternoon tea, and good hearty meals of veges and meat for lunch... definately nice to know if she's fussy at dinner that she's at least had a good serve of fruit and veges that day.
and yep - paris usually turns down bikies in favour of raisins cheese and crackers.. and she hates juice most of the time (except those cute little just juices if we are out).. only milk or water for her!

i used to suck the salt off the mcd's chips before giving to my boy...lots of people say he is small for his age, but he is happy and healthy and eats a balanced diet, more so than his mom sometimes, so what the hey i say. (best chips probably tho if you are worried is Wendy's cause they dont salt them at all.)

Hey guys havn't been on in a while so I'm a lil behind but going back to the original breastfeeding worries. Have you tried contacting the La Leche League at all? They are suppoed to be really good with helping with breastfeeding problems.
As far as fast food goes I'll probably let Gracie have it when she's older but I'll definately stay away from McDonalds, my mum got a really REALLY bad case of gastroenteritis (food poisoning) from McD's and was sick for 2 weeks and was in hospital for about 5 days.

We managed to avoid nappy rash by using powder at every change, and used liners to try and contain the yuckiness, but especially when she was really small there were some huge explosions that ended up eveywhere

we got cloth nappies, and up the hospital for the first few days i sorta liked them, then by day 3 i thought stuff this, theres some samples here of huggies and treasures, and after that i was sold. i think it also didn't help that while i knew how to fold nappies, no matter what did i could NEVER fold them small enough! my older sister came to visit me in the hospital just a few hours after i had paris and she folded heaps of nappies for me to use.. i even tried taking one of hers undone and redoing it step by step and it still didn't work out right.
lol, pink.. i said that too, but its all everyone gives you when you have a girl - i hadn't bought any myself, it was all gifts.. then of course you HAVE to use it, and then they look so cute. and that's the end of that. plus theres the fact that a few times when i dressed paris in a really neat blue outift, people presumed she was a boy "shock horror!" actually, come to think of it, there were a few times when people still asked "girl or boy" when she was fully decked in pink. now i'm worried .

I use cloth on Ella... very easy really, if you get fitted nappies you dont need to know how to fold the flat ones. I still like to use flats though because they dry so quick, but fitteds are obviously easier. Dont get any nappy rash unless she has a round of diahorrea (from teething usually), and use microfleece for liners because it lets moisture through but doesnt absorb it.

Hi,
Have you given La Leche or one of them specialist breatfeeding peoples a go.......I can hardly give advise, but I know the last time I had a baby the age of Jayde (11 years ago), Plunket were damned useless in this area. I actually gave up b/feeding at 6 weeks due to pure frustration thinking I was doing it all wrong. As it turned out, darian's (my son) skeletal plates had been slightly squished at birth (forceps) and so he couldn't suck properly. A cranial osteopath had him fixed in 2 sessions.....if only I had known that at the time, could have saved everyone a lot of drama.
Good Luck....:-)

When I got Ella weighed at 8 months, she had only gained 140grams in a month. I started dropping breastfeeds and putting her on formula the next day, by 9 months she was down to 1 breastfeed per day and had gained 700grams in that month. Not saying that you should put her on formula though, just that it made a big difference for us.

Have you mentioned it to your GP Maria? We have a great GP who really listens and she was one of the few people who took me seriously when Maya wasn't thriving. Maybe you could mention your concerns to your GP and they can check whether there are any underlying causes like not sucking properly or whatever. That might give you some more ideas.
But most likely Jayde is just growing a little slower than usual. Maya was hug eborn, then slowed right down. She's still small for her age, but perfectly healthy.
Good luck, but I'm sure Jayde will be fine, after all you breastfed Alyssa successfully without too many problems, so this time round you know what you're doing.

Do you just feed her on the one side? If you are feeding on both sides you could try putting her back on the same side for a top up, instead of the other, that wat she should get more hind milk which is the stuff with lots of fat etc.

yep, letting her totally empty one breast then offering her the other. Giving her the side she doesnt like first. I was starting her off on alternate sides but got told to give her the side she doesnt like most first as she is less likely to reject it. But keep the ideas coming, much appreciated.

Maya was the opposite - she rejected the left side lol. That's also the side I got mastitis in so I had to totally retrain her to feed off that side.
Funny too, even at 10 mths when we were both pretty much experts at the whole feeding thing, she still favoured the right side over the left. And when I started bottle feeding about the same time, she would only lie facing the right side. Funny baby that she is.

I have a friend who had enough milk to feed a small army, however her child failed to thrive and it turned out she had heaps of milk but it wasn't stong enough for bubs, she alternated between breast feeds and formula and bubs thrived. As for plunket I find them pretty useless! I have the added advantage that my doctor is also a trained midwife so I tend to go to her with problems. We are having probs with supply and I was devasted when I found I could'nt fully feed abby so I know how frustrating it can be. I top her up with formula and it sasifies my need to breastfeed (last baby) and her need for huge amounts of food. Good luck. Ps my sis is a manager at McD's and you guys can ask for unsalted chips for the kids and they have to do it.

I have finally had enough of looking at my poor little starving baby. going to my doctor today to discuss what formula she reccommends and formula feeding. (Never done it and just want to know ins and outs)
I feel so horrible but i know its best for her in the long run. Ill still breast feed her first. Plus im exhusted from expressing all the time, its now taking me an hour and a half to get between 80 and 100mls. SO my supply is getting less because im so tired. Thismorning i was up since 4-30. Feed Jayde, expressed, went to bed but then rob got up, then lissy got up. Anyway will let you all know her progress on monday and see if formula works.

I don't think formula makes a huge difference to a childs development. I appreciate there are a huge number of good things in breast milk but if it comes down to a choice between an exhausted mum and a baby that is not thriving then formula has to better for everyone.
I put Angie onto formula at 3 months as I was just exhausted, she wasn't sleeping well and if you told me your name I couldn't remember it 5 minutes later. We used Karicare formula and after the first day where she wasn't interested she was quite happy.

I decided to start bottle feeding Jake at three months because I started back at work. Initially i decided to express, but it is just so difficult to get enough for baby to be satisfied with. As someone else said, much better to have a relaxed mum with a bottle and formlua, than a stressed out one, with breast milk.

My doctor was fantastic. Gave me some Karicare samples the gold and the normal one. Ive got to go back and see her next week. She told me to breast feed first but as soon as Jayde starts crying or going to sleep at the breast give her the bottle to top up. Hopefully it works. Shes not taking much formula at the moment but i guess some is better than none.

Good luck Maria. Its tough when we are bombarded with the message that breast is best. It's not always - Maya stopped growing at 5 mths but I stubbornly perservered with the breast until eventually she was so thin and sick she ended up in hospital and then I felt so guilty! At 10 mths we put her on formula, and she is now a healthy weight for her age.
Good luck, and the Karicare dieticians are great too. I rang them a few times when we were thinking about weaning Maya and they sent me free samples and info on bottle feeding etc.

yep, i struggled on too long too, and ended up with the bottle taking over.. but Paris benefitted and while i still had a bit of guilt, in the end it made all the difference, and helped me relax and actually enjoy feeding her. we used the heinz nurture stuff, but my sister used the karicare stuff.. both are just as good.
good luck and hopefully baby will be a bit more settled and mum will be able to relax! (if there is such a thing with 2 kids)

well have finally got an appt to a see a pediatrician. Yay. Hopefully get some answers. I'm getting so stressed out at Jayde crying at every feed time. I finally broke down in tears this morning talking on the phone to the hosptials lactation consultant (who is also an old family friend) She told me that she would call the child health clinic to see when my apt was. Got a call back 5 mins later from the child health clinic saying they had a cancelation on wed and i could come in then. I feel so releived we only have to tough it out until then.

I really hope you get some answers Maria. Maya was diagnosed as 'fails to thrive' as a baby and I was heartbroken. I felt like such a failure as a Mum. But we got thru it, as I'm sure you and Jayde will, and well, you've seen Maya now - you'd never know that she didn't gain weight at all for over than 6 mths!
The best advice I can give you tho based on my experience is to trust your gut and push for answers. If you feel something is not right, or you don't agree with what the doctor says, ask for a second opinion, and scream until you get it. It took five visits to the emergency department with my underweight and very sick 9 month old before someone finally took me seriously and treated her the way they should have when it first started at 16 weeks.
We're thinking of you, good luck on Wednesday!

Thanks. I keep thinking of all the problems you had with Maya, and yes it does help to think of what a happy healthy girl she is. Yep if i dont get any luck here there is a specailist in auckland that i can go to who apparently is an expert in reflux babies. I really just want this over so i can enjoy feeding time again. By the way did you get put on pepti junior or some other formula. If its an allergy i think we are going to have to go on that.

Yep, we did the whole Pepti Junior thing. It looks and smells awful, but Maya seemed to really like it. I had been breastfeeding until 10 mths when they convinced me to wean her onto the Pepti Jnr and all of a sudden she started growing. I still feel guilty thatI was pressured into stopping breastfeeding, if I could do it over again I think I would try eliminating dairy, egg, soy and peanut from my diet (that's what she's allergic to) to see if that helped, as traces can pass thru the breastmilk. There's nothing I can really do to stop our next child getting allergies, it's just luck of the draw, but I think I will try the restricted diet when breastfeeding.
If you get the Pepti Jnr, or Neocate prescribed for Jayde, your doc will organise a funding # for you from the Ministry of Health which makes it $15 for two tins which is pretty reasonable. And we have Southern Cross so could claim the cost back from them as it is a prescription. Also, WINZ pay a Child Disability Allowance to parents of children who have allergies, your doctor can give you a form if you need it, and it's $75 a fortnight regardless of your income.
Not that I think you will need any of this stuff, but maybe it will help. Otherwise, let me know if you guys are coming to Auckland and I will come and see you or you can come and visit us.

well here goes. We went for our appt yesterday and met the very young paediatrician. We came out of there feeling that she didnt really beleive us as Jayde looks okay (only because i am force feeding her). Anway she sent us for an ECG which came back okay (whew) and had to get a stool sample analised. She also sent me a refferal to a lactation consultant/speech therapist, as we think she must have thought it was the way i was feeding Jayde. I got a little upset then thinking that it would be months until we heard from this person. But as it turns out our family friend/ consultant knew this other lady and told her i couldnt go all easter weekend without being seen. SOoooo had an apt with ST LC today at 8-30am and she saw straight away that it wasnt how i was feeding Jayde and that she was in pain. She thinks it is some sort of lactose intolerence. She also gave me this tube thing to feed her with on my little finger so i can start weening her back to the breast. (apparently your little finger is like your nipple). SO went home with this and she feed really well for that feed, as i knew she would because she feeds well on something new and then once she figures out it causes her pain she wont have it again. So that LC SP phoned at 2 to ask me how things were going i said she had feed really well but was quite upset and spilly afterwards. SHe asked me if i would like to come in for the afternoon feed so i said okay. Jayde refused breast and only drank 10mls. SHe went and got the doctor that we initially had and must of said something needs to be done because the doctor came back with a perscription for a reflux medication called Rentadine (SP) and also said that she would send away to get me a free tin of pepti-junior to try if renadine didnt work. So at least people are taking us seriously now. Thanks for the support guys.

She is an awesome big sister. I feel so sorry for her at the moment because of all the time i spend with Jayde (an hour and a half to feed). She used to get really concerned saying "she alright, Shayde alright?)
Now she ignores her crying most of the time. Which is good because i was wondering how bad it was upsetting Lissy.

I'm glad you got some answers. It is really hard whenyou feel like you aren't ebing listened to. Bt fingers crossed the reflux medicine will work and you won't have to go down the Pepti Jnr road. But it's not so bad if you do. If for any reason I need to formula feed my next child they will probably put him/her straight on PJ just in case because Maya has had so many problems.
Good luck with the reflux meds.

Well plus side today feeds are going much better. On the downside took Jayde into A&E as she has yellow/green discharge from her vagina. The doctor said looks like urine infection (linked to her not feeding well) but as per usual Jayde being normal happy self doesnt present symptoms, ie temp, crying etc. SO they have taken cultures and will get back to us tomorrow to let us know either way if she needs antibiotics or not. Im sure everything is linked but i guess we just have to nail down what her problem is.

Just a wee update on Jayde. Since last thurday her feeds have gone downhill again. Screaming arching etc. anyway e-mailed her paed and she spoke to a gastroenterologist at Starshiip Hospital who suggested Jayde go up to 15 mg of losec a day. Also has booked her in at starship for a gastroscopy. Scary stuff, but there is a long waiting list so hopefully things have resolved by the time we get that far down the road. Also we are going to go off breastfeeding for a week and have her totally on pepti. As there may be something coming through my breastmilk??? I know im probably grasping at straws but who knows right. So going to be like a cow for a week and hooked up to my pumping machine.

That could be right tho Maria, Maya didn't grow at all on breastmilk yet as soon as she started on the Pepti her weight started going up. They seemed to think that traces of milk, egg and soya were getting to Maya thru my milk and upseting her digestive system.
I hope you don't have to go thru a gastroscopy, but they aren't so scary. I had one when I was 16, and it was unpleasant, but over really quickly. It woul dbe hard to watch your child go thru tho, I remember when they had to put a feeding tube into Maya I was such a wreck. But hopefully Jayde will improve and not need the gastroscopy.
How were the results of her RAST tests etc.? Have they identified any specific allergies?

Paed nurse came out on thursday and weighed Jayde. Been two weeks. She had only put on 60gms in two weeks. I just bawled my eyes out. Things are so tough at the moment. Its soooo hard to get her to have any milk. So only thing we can do now is wait for starship. Unfortunately i dont know anyone that works there so cant get speed through the system like here. So will just have to wait. We would go private but Starship are the best dealing with kids and going under G.A. you want the best. Oh well better go. Lissy sick at the moment. I think Jayde is getting it. Will make feeding worse no doubt.

Hi, I too have gone through the anguish of poor weight gain in my two youngest. At the age of nine months they were failure to thrive. Hannah was losing weight (now 6yrs), so was placed on a calorie supplement. It helped maintain her weight, but little to no gains. She was my biggest baby, nine pounds nine ounces, had maintained a healthy weight till seven months. By a year old she was so petite, and still is. It took surgery in the end to help her, and medications (my children are extreem cases though).
Often finding the right medication and dose for Reflux helps. Sometimes one medication on it's own is not enough. I tried many things to try and help my kids, checking for food allergies too. We all want to do whatever possible for our children, go to any lengths. You are doing just what any parent in your situation would do.

Starship were great when Maya was there (apart from the emergency department who tried to send her home when she was so sick she ended up being admitted for 7 nights).
I really really hope you get some answers, and get a break soon. It is so tough when your baby is sick, must be even harder with Alyssa as well. Do you get respite care? You would definitely qualify for it if it was something you wanted. We had it with Maya, where the Ministry of Health pays someone to look after her for the equivalent of 28 days a year (or less depending on need). I had a friend look after her which was great for my friend who needed the cash, but also gave me a break to rest as I was feeding hourly all day and all night. Your Plunket nurse should be able to let you know who to contact about it in your area if you're interested.

But if she has a dairy allergy/intolerance that will probably last longer than six months? Our GP filled in the form for Maya to get the Child Disability allowance until she is 3 (2006) and if she outgrows her allergies before then I just have to let them know. You should push to get it coz every little bit helps.

Hi all, I phoned Jaydes paed this morning (im so glad she is sooo understanding and fantastic) Anyway asked if it was possible to get her feed with a naso gastric tube for a week just to give us both a break. She agreed and said it was something that she had been discussing with the nurse that comes out to check Jayde every week anyway. So that is getting done on wednesday. I also phoned starship thismorning and left a message on their AP re Jaydes appointment. It might be something i do weekly until they get so sick of me that they give me an apt.

We did the naso gastric tube with Maya and it was horrible to watch, but it does get results - with her she couldn't keep anything she swallowes down, but she managed to keep the fluids down when they were fed by tube. Good luck!
And definitely hassle Starship, I would ring once a day if need be. Eventually they will get sick of you and give you an appointment. With Maya I got so sick of being fobbed off that I went and sat in the Emergency Department and refused to leave until they admitted her. She saw a paediatrician for the first time the next morning and he couldn't believe that the other doctors in the ED had let things get so bad before they finally gave in and admitted her.
