I love my husbands middle name spelt Thys (he hates it) So I had to comprimise and if we had a boy I was allowed to name him Troy, other boys names i liked was Corey, Jet, Kole, Beau.

how bout the traditional, james, peter, anton, paul, daniel, thomas, or the popular jack or jake or after a character in a book, if you like sci fi my step son is named after a david eddings character, something different... or how bout the short max, zak, todd, tom, sam or the bizarre dartanygyn (sorry spelling is wrong) morpheus, name him after a fruit (ie apple paltrow), a motor vehicle, maybe ford, harley, telstra, mercedes, soap characters like beau, ridge or chase... unisex names like quinn, taylor, forest, kelly(ey)(ie), jesse. the possibilites are endless.. oscar is one of my faves and george ... have fun, you have heaps of time.

Congratulations on the baby boy!!!! We really liked Owen, we only really thought of boys names before we found out we were having a girl. We also really liked Regan, Riley, and I love Petes middle name which is Hunt. Theres some really cool websites with baby names and their meanings, origins etc. Do a google search for baby names and there'll be hundreds of sites. Good Luck choosing!

Ilike riley too. but it too was rejected. we didn't agree on any boys names apart from jake.

My girlfriend in Japan named her baby "kai" which means ocean in Japanese...but I guess meaning "food" in maori isn't too good.

hmmm, I won't tell you the boys names I like as I might need them.

Meanings of names are important to me, so I go though baby names sites looking at names and meanings.  eg Sophie is Sophie Louise meaning Wisdom and famous warrior respectivly, so for us it means Sophie will be a wise warrior for God

I looked at meanings too when I named Maya. Her first name is after Maya Angelou the poet, my greatest inspiration as a poet, and her Maori name "Te Irirangi Marama" means the point where heaven and earth meets" which is symbolic to the Ratana church, which is her fathers religion. I chucked Grace in there coz I liked the way it sounded with Maya. But I like that she is named after a poet,I think that's kind of romantic, and very important to me as a writer. If I hava a boy next time round, his middle name will be "Shakur" after Tupac Shakur who is also a huge influence on my writing. I wouldn't inflict the poor kid with that as a first name tho LOL!
As for boys first names, both of my favorite boys names have been used by friends, so I have no idea.

We really liked Jonty, Corbin, Ethan, Noah and Kiyou but once I saw Kobe I knew that was the name for me. If he was a girl we would have spelt it Khobi as we have it spelt that way for a girl. I also like Nico but thats japanese for cat aparently so thats not very manly.

Japanese for cat is neko, slightly different, Nico means....ahng on....well, its a city over here. funnily enough Nikko is the city where the temple with the see no evil, etc monkeys are. Robert muldoon gave the temple a horse (real horse, nota statue) called Koha in 1988.
niko means "grin"
nikoo means "sunshine. (the longer o sound is like orange, not like book)

thats kinda cool

It could be worse Robyn - if I have a boy I am planning to give him a middle name afer a gangsta rapper who went to jail for rape, was shot five times and survived and then was shot again and died at age 25. Poor kid lol having Shakur for a name.
But he was an awesome writer underneath it all, and a source of inspiration to me...

i think it's easier calling little girls something more unsual than boys. especially in NZ where a lot of people think different means "gay"...Lewis still thinks wearing sunscreen is kinda girly!

That's a Maori male thing. Willie will put sunscreen on his daughter, but at New Years he got really sick with sunstroke putting the hangi down because he refuses to wear it himself. He reckons he's too black to need sunscreen, I reckon he's too stupid to wear sunscreen.

hehe i'm a bit slow but i have to say that gsmum is making me laugh! great suggestions!!!

i liked jackson and max and my favourite was Willem or Wilheim, but my cousins name is William and he's only 5, so it would have been too close if Hannah was a boy.

people ask how i decided on hannah, i'd like to say that it had special meaning, but really it was the only name i didn't get sick of. you might end up like me jess! sticking with the one you didn't hate!

Now we really like the name Kobin but cant have Kobe and Kobin plus my name in Robyn so thats a bit corney really.

Choosing a name for one baby is hard enough we are having twins and have to choose two names plus middle names.  Our son has two middle names, so it will be really differcult this time round.  my husband and I have got no ides at all i guess we will be reading a lot of baby name books.

You want confusing family names? With my in-laws, here's the situation:

Father-in-law: David
Sister-in-law's husband: David (Dave)
Sister-in-law (same one): Rebecca (Becs)
Me: Rebecca (Becca)
Brother-in-law: Michael (Mike)
Niece (daughter of Mike): Michal
If our baby is a girl, we've chosen the name Mikaela, and Bec likes the name Mikaylee for when they have a daughter.
If our baby is a boy, he will have the same middle name as Nat, and Kiya has the same middle name as me. Our nephew has the same middle names as his Dad, Mike.

So in a family of 12, (the parents, their daughter + husband + kid, their son + wife + 2 kids, their other son + wife + 1 & 7/8 kids) we have 3 identical first names, and the potential to have 3 very similar sounding names! Plus there's the shared middle names!

Hi there, for boys names I like Karson & my partner didn't like it. He liked Fergus, which I didn't like because it made me think of HAGGIS & also of the Massey Ferguson tractor (we are farmers) he also liked Zac but I have a dog with the same name so I said no way! But he didn't see the connection. SOOOOO we settled on Alex :-)
I know you wanted boys names but had to put this in, I have two sisters named Courtney-Jane & Courtney-Jean
I love the name Courtney but I think two in one family is MORE than enough!

Hi there guys... I'm a newbie so hopefully I won't post this twice...

Hubby & I are trying to get pregnant (haven't been trying long)..

However we can't decide on a boys middle name, we both like Jett as a first name, but he wants its middle name to be Seth (like the motocross dude in the US)... I dont like it cause it the name we called a puppy that we had on trial... but didnt keep!! any suggestions for a middle name to go with Jett???

We have no problem with a girls name... Alexa Paige it will be!
Hubby also has 2 children from a previous marriage, both their names are quite common, but I like unusual names...

My husband and I didnt have time to talk names yet but I am keeping an eye on names I like (Girls and boys).

I want an unusual name......

I just think that with unusual names you have to think about when they are grown up. I used to work with a guy who called his son Raven and he had a long convuluted last name too which was a bit much. Feel sorry for him when he is older with such an unusual name.......

Hey lizzle sorry took so long to reply havent been on this post for a while.  My sons name is Blair Michael Andrew.  Michael after my dad and Andrew after my brother sort of regreting the two middle names thing but never mind.

My twins are one boy and maybe a girl they weren't 100% about her though. So will check again at next scan.

I think the twins should have two middle names like Blair  so that they are all even with there names but my husband thinks otherwise.  What do you guys think???

Well if thats the case, I have set a dangerous precedent - Maya's full name is Maya Grace Te Irirangi Marama Davis. All her names mean something special to us, Maya after my fave poet, Grace coz I liked it and Te Irirangi Marama her dad picked which means the point where heaven an earth meets in the Ratana church, and he is Ratana.
So that means next time we have to pick another 4 middle names although Maori names tend to be long anyways...

i only ever wanted one name for our boy but with a common last name i didnt think it was a good idea ( i have worked in the credit reporting field prev and saw the trouble that got some people into.) cant think of a good name now for #2 - i like blair tho (thanks) and also alex but my husbands step bro has a son called alex but he lives in oz... i think naming a child is one of the hardest things, the name we give them affects them so much and i believe helps shape who they are, so much responsibility ...

I went from having one of the most common surnames (King) to being related by marriage to anyone else in NZ with my husband's surname (Louwrens)! My father-in-law is South African, and when he and his brother emigrated to NZ years ago, they were the only ones. The rest of their surviving family (there were 9 kids in total, and the parents) followed... now we have to be careful cause everyone's going to mispronounce our surname anyway, so even though we like unusual names we don't want to give our kids something that they go through life correcting!

Of course, when I chose Kiya's name that wasn't a problem... she does have to tell people how to say her name (kii-yah), but with such an easy surname it's not a big deal... however, when Nathaniel adopts her, we will change her surname and... lets just say I feel a little sorry for her!

I was going to ask that Becca... so Nathaniel is going to adopt Kiya?
I'm thinking about that for the future... we'll see how things go.
It's cool hearing bits of your story as it gives me hope that I'm going to find a great Dad for Hannah one day!
(I'm stalking a guy in a couple of my classes at the moment. Will have to see if he is suitable for the job! hehe)

Posted By: daikini
Date Posted: 16 April 2005 at 2:05pm
Yes, Nathaniel is going to adopt Kiya. Just after we got engaged, we were all lying on my bed in the middle of the day and Nathaniel said "Kiya, can I be your daddy?" and Kiya looked him right in the eye and said "Yes. Can I be your daughter?" Nathaniel was almost crying as he said "yes" and they hugged. Kiya was 2.5yo. At the moment, we're just waiting until he's finished his studies (June) and has got a full-time job, then we're going to look into the adoption in more detail.

There might be a slight hassle - I've not put Kiya's father's name on the birth certificate, and depending on the judge, that can be a complication if they decide I was being all self-rightous and have denied the birth father any rights! The other potential problem is that I may have to give up my rights as Kiya's birth mother to adopt her with Nathaniel as a couple. This means I sign over my girl, she becomes a ward of the state, then they decide if Nathaniel and I are suitable parents to adopt Kiya! If that's the case, we're not going to go through with the adoption... we'll change her surname by deed-poll, and visit a lawyer to organise something else... like declaring Nathaniel legal guardian and next-of-kin or whatever.

You can declare a person legal guardian without officially adopting them, or terminating the rights of either birth parent. I am a legal guardian of Mona, along with Willie and her birth mother, so we all hav equal say in what happens to her.

lol!! I'm sure Kyan will find that a source of great amusement when he gets older! We named Jake from a charecter in "the Blues Brothers" movie, but you;d be surprised how many people think we names him after "jake the muss", as of course a fictional wife beater is a great person to name your first born after!!!

IN Japan a couple wanted to name their child Akuma -which means demon but thye government wouldn't let them register it. They had to change it!

but our boys name was chosen from charmed.. from a good guy, not a demon. lol our girls name i have only heard of one other person called it so far, and it's a celebrity.

now i have you all guessing, ha ha ha ha!

Other names we liked for boys other than our chosen one were:

Bailey (my sis used that)
Regan
Sage and
Xavier
all with the middle name Micheal.. to follow tradition of the son having the father's name as his middle name.
We have a pretty common last name too - so having unique names is all good.. but we wanted to ensure the kid wasn't gonna get any teasing from it too. we looked at what the initial spell, and what it can be shortened too, what nicknames we could think of.. we basically turned our minds back to primary school and thought of all the bad stuff, lol, then ruled those names out.

Gsmum, you are so right - it is hard to name your child. Paris was easy, mike did it for me.. this time was my turn and it is such a huge thing.

omigosh Maria - how scary is it that your little girl is nearly 4 months old already? i can't believe that! mind you, mum took my nephew to get his 3 mth jabs the other day.. and i didn't believe her that he was that age already, these months are just running one into another.

Tee hee hee,I know it Janine but thats only cos U had told me wot names u had picked.

IF this baby decides to be a boy me and nath are screwed as we aint thought of any in case.we would have a hard time even choosing a middle name cos Xander has Nathan as his middle name.Hmmmmmmm guess i better pick a boy name just in case aye.I only got 3 wks till she is due lol

lol, I'm sure we beleive you Lizzle.. sadly, I am that lazy some days, but i think it's justified. I'm still outta bed at 6.30am to get Paris sorted for Daycare, so usually it's just a catnap once they're gone and the housework is done. lol.

I love the guessing.. lol, still think no-one will get it, (becs is privledged, lol)

Maria I hope things turn around for you and bub.. it does feel pretty terrible when problems crop up and you don't have the most enjoyable experience for the first little while..

no they were a very poor family apparently (my workmate was 50 so we are talking 40 odd years ago) Had no shoes lived in a shed. Maybe they called the kids things that they wanted to own. Who knows?

Its easy to ask. I just blurted out "what is it?" In the end I didn't need to ask coz when he brought the right bits up on the screen it was rather too obvious. Alex may as well have wiggled his hips at me!
