My new midwife is really really nice. Her name is Shelly Sjaarda (pronounced Sharda) and she works at the Waterford Birthing centre. She is a registered nurse and midwife and delivers at River Ridge, Waterford and Waikato. Her back up is also a registered nurse, midwife and a lactation consultant.
Shelly is very thorough, caring and knowledgeable, and I've only seen her once as I shifted to Hamilton at 28 weeks.
Infact, I would imagine if you went to Waterford birthing centre, or gave them a call, they would put you on to a really good midwife.
Good luck!

Ok, I just read your post again and realised it said 'home' birth.
Not sure about that, but I see in the phonebook there are heaps that do homebirths as well.

My MW was FABULOUS!!! So was her back up (which was great as that's who I ended up having at my birth)
Their business name is Total Care.
My midwife was Jo Maddison and her back-up is Tracey Harris. They have their office at Waterford, but they can deliver anywhere (hosp, RR).. Not too sure about homebirths as I wasn't keen for one being the 1st time around. I would say that they do it though. (Their number is in the yellow pages)
Anyway, best of luck finding one that you feel comfortable with - that's the main thing!!!!
Also, don't be afraid to 'interview' a variety of MW's before making your decision. You have to feel comfortable with them (cause they're going to be seeing a lot of you!!...lol)

I used "Babies R Us" midwives for my two older children. Both the midwives I had were fantastic, but unfortunately neither are delivering in Hamilton anymore (one retired after some health issues, the other has moved). I don't know if they do home births, but I can highly recommend them. They have delivery agreements with Waterford, River Ridge and Waikato Hospital.
Due to a medical condition I had to deliver at the hospital, but my midwives arranged for me to stay at Rhonda Reid (Morrinville) with my first and Waterford with my second for a few days.

AnnaJeremy - I had Jo Maddison too!
She was great - I was diagnosed diabetic at 7wks pregnant, but fell thru the cracks and wasn't seen at the hospital clinic til around 20weeks. After that, I had a big downer over a lot of stuff and Jo was great to talk to. She was also great during labour (even though she had another woman in labour just across the hall!!!) and her student (Sarah Power) was also fabulous. And Tracey was lovely too - I had a couple of checkups with her, and 2 home visits as Jo was on holiday.

I had a wonderful midwife who squeezed me in when I was 34 weeks ( I had previously lived in Auckland and Brisbane during my pregnancy) Her name in Renee Miller and she's a midwife at the Midwife Shoppe. She is very easy going and kind, due to complications in labour I had to have a c-section so she was unable to deliver me but she visited regulary whilst I was in hospital...and I was teary when I had to say goodbye to her after our postnatal visits. I would definitely have her again as a midwife. I"m sure that she does home births....but yea she has such a kind and calming persona
