Hi

I think I am coming down with a cold/flu. I'm 11 weeks at the moment.
Has anybody had this experience? What did you do? What did you take that is safe?
Anyone know if having the flu will affect the baby?

Thanks

Hi there,

I had a really bad cold at 12 weeks and again at around 28 weeks and I took some panadol, squeezed lemon with honey and warm water mixed together. When I had the flu the second time around I also had to get a nasal spray as my cold was so bad but that was recommended to me by my doctor. I ended up having a perfectly healthy baby. If you are feeling really awful then go and see a doctor.

I also had two colds during pregnancy and it wasn't fun (I am normally a big Codral person!!) I did lemon and honey drinks also panadol is ok. When my nose was blocked I slept with two pillows and that helped a bit. Also taking a day off work and resting might help it go quicker. As far as I am aware it can't harm the baby. I think most people probably have the flu and some stage of their pregnancy.
Rest up.

I had 2 really bad colds in pregnancy, and basically it was bed rest, lots of OJ, and panadol which actually did nothing. The second one included a really bad cough which had me worried about my asthma, following an after hours appointment at white cross was basically told, can't give you anything.

I've just had a cold. I had heaps of lemon and honey drinks, bed rest, plenty of fluids and kept warm. I read that if you think you've got a fever, that you should reduce your temperature by having a cool bath/shower and having plenty of water. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi, your baby will be fine Unfortunately your body is so busy at the moment that tiredness and low immunity are very common. Hope you get better soon, the wacky weather is screwing heaps of people around at the mo.

I had a really bad cold at about 7 weeks....I was devastated, I was feeling so sick and having a bad cold on top of it didnt help! I took panadol, and got a nasal spray from the chemist (saline based) - but not sure that helped much. I made honey and lemon drinks (I make mine with lemonade...yumm) and after a few days I seemed to kick it. Basically drink lots of fluids, stay in bed, relax and just think 'well' thoughts.

Sarah Beth - I have asthma too and when I was coughing all night, to the point I was coughing things up (sorry TMI) I was SOOOOO worried about my asthma. I was monitoring my peak flow every hour and terrified that I might have to go to the hospital. I basically just double dosed my inhalers, like I would normally do when I was sick, and kept a very closae eye on my peak flow. I was so scared that everytime I coughed I was 'loosening' the baby....stupid I know, but I was pretty sick!!

I had a bad cold at 10 weeks - I stayed in bed for 3 days, took vit C, lemsips (they just have panadol in them) and panadol when I had a headache, plus lots of water. Baby should be fine. I just found it really exhausting - my body didn't have the energy to fight bugs and make baby! haha.

Once you're feeling better, take a pregnancy multi to get your Zinc levels back up -- it may be low with baby taking it all, which effects your immune system. (Best not to take them while you're sick though, as they feed the bugs!)
