Joshua will be 1 in 5 weeks, and I'm guessing that is about the time to start weaning him. Can anyone tell me what I'm supposed to do, and how, and HELP!!!! Should we cut bottles completely and use a sippy cup? Should we use toddler milk or straight to blue top? Does he still need a bottle at first waking or should we go straight for breakfast??? I truly have no idea what I'm meant to do!

I just recently started weaning Matthew & am giving him a sippy cup of either toddler milk or blue top milk in place of his morning breastfeed. He has that at about 7am & then has breakfast at about 8am. I don't think it matters whether you use a sippy cup or a bottle to start with. I give Matthew a sippy cup because that's what he drinks his water out of, so is used to it. Re toddler milk vs cows milk, if he's eating a balanced diet then cow's milk is ok, toddler milk just has added iron etc to help supplement their diet. I'm just winging it really - I couldn't really find a lot of info regarding weaning & had no idea of what to do either!!

Clare - no need to wean just because he turned one... hopefully you feel it's time to wean because YOU want to, not just because the Plunket recommended age is 1 - WHO recommends feeding until 2 years.
Sorry for sounding like a dick... I just don't like the stigma that surrounds extended feeding.
Anywayyyyy... I cut down Hannah's feeds one by one, a few days between each and offered milk in a sippy cup (which she wouldn't touch) and then in a bottle (which she also wouldn't touch).
I think I dropped the pre-breakfast feed first, leaving milk before afternoon and night sleeps.
I'd go with sippy cup if you can get him to take it.

Well first off all do you want to wean? If no dont worry about it. If yes then I suggest the following...
Dont go to a bottle as you will just have to get him of the bottle later on. Go to a sippy cup.
Also rather give a toddler formula milk as it has the added vitamins and iron that cows milk dont need.
Whether you want to give him the morning milk is up to you. How does he eat his breakfast? If he isnt hungry cut it out and rather give it after breakfast.
They need about 2 cups of milk at least after a year.
I nightweaned McKayla really easily. But for daytime I heard the following tips from friends ( I intend to BF until 2 at least how ever.)
Limit the times he is allowed on the breast. No more in public and he has to wait. Rather give water or his other milk. If he drinks his other milk you can just go cold turkey and see how he reacts. I dont know your childs temperament so cant exactly say which method is best.
www.kellymom.com should be able to give loads of advice on this as well. Really wonderful site.
Good luck with what ever you decide.

Just checked out that kellymom website - it has got loads of advice!
Yeah I agree with Nikki & Shirena - you don't HAVE to wean just because he's 1. While I've weaned Matthew off his morning feed, I'm still breasfeeding him before he goes to bed because I'm not quite ready to stop completely yet.

clare - it sounded to me like you bottle feed him anyway... so you could try to give him a cup instead of a bottle. i find the kids usually let you know when something is not right for them. so if you wanted to try no bottle in the morning just do it and see what happens. but you might want to try the ones in the afternoon first. and if he is one then you can try either cows milk or toddler milk. if he is getting enough nutrients from his food etc then you shouldnt need a toddler milk. Just try with a cup and you may find he lets you know how he wants to proceed with it all.

I weaned my older two girls at the 11 month mark (because I was pregnant again lol), I went straight onto sippy cup with cow's milk. When they came in for morning feed, I would get up right away and organise breakfast. There was no fuss, every time she asked for a feed I'd just distract, such as turning her back to me and reading a story. I find it a good age to wean because they forget so quickly and they want to have cups like "mum" etc. Both girls were weaned within a week, just didn't ask for feeding any more after that point.
BTW Plunket suggests 2 glasses of milk per day but I found that my girls weren't that interested. I think they were just full on other foods and didn't push it. They can also have a serve of cheese/yoghurt instead of milk.
