We had a scan at 6w

Just ask the midwife and they will set one up.

There are some places that do free scans up to the 13 week scan.

Some MW's will allow you to have one in the early weeks and some don't. If you have date worries or some bleeding then you would be allowed one. If you really want one you can say to your MW's BU that you have had some bleeding and they will make sure you get a scan ASAP. Sneaky but a way to get one if you really want one.

You don't need to go to your MW to get the referral either. I had one at 7 weeks and my doc referred me for it and you dont have to pay for the doc visit either because it's free when its about the pregnancy

I went to the doctor to arrange my dating scan. Doctors appointment and scan was all free. At my scan I found out I was 6 weeks and 2 days so similar to your dates MeganGrace. It does make it very real, although the baby looks so so tiny, more like a bean really, but the very strong heart beat makes it very real! It blinks away there so fast!

It's better to wait till 7 + weeks if you can tho. The heartbeat is visible from around 6 weeks, but if you are a few days behind where you think you are (common) bubs may be too small to see the heartbeat and cause you undue stress. I had a scan at 5w5d with the gremlins and they saw only a gest sac + yolk sac, had another scan at 6w0d and saw one heartbeat but it wasn't till 9 weeks they could actually see enough to determine two babies.

I know if you've had fertility treatment they usually wait until 7 weeks for the first scan also unless you have bleeding etc.

Hang in there Megangrace - the first few weeks seem to drag on forever, I remember the night before my 6 week scan was one of the longest of my life worrying about whether the baby was growing OK.

Oh and your GP can refer you in first tri, but second and third tri scans must be ordered by either your LMC or an obstetrician.

I wasn't offered a scan until 20 weeks. I was told that it wasn't necessary for a 12 week one as I'm only 22 and didn't need a dating scan because I was sure of dates.

Makes you think back to when our parents had us and there were no scans!

So yeah, my scan at 22 weeks was well worth the wait!

My early dating scan was organised through my GP - worth it to see the little heartbeat!!

I asked my gp about an early one as we are not completely sure of dates due to my cycles being mixed up and not really watching too much due to mikes Vasectomy, lol, but he told us we could do it if we wanted but would have to ring and book it and pay for it ourselves? Am going to wait and see what my midwife says once i get hold of one. With my others i never got an early scan at all - both i had to wait till 20 weeks.

My doctor refferred me for my first scan (dating scan) and the 12 week scan. Only cause by then i still hadnt found a midwife.
I really only wanted the 12 week scan to see the bubs again. Was worth it, bubs had changed so much in that little space of like 4 weeks. It was cool.

Cant wait till my 19/20 week scan. Should be next week!

I had my first one at 6weeks with this bubs and that was refered from my doc because i had fertility probs and wasnt going to find a MW until we were sure that all was ok then my MW has refered me for my last 3 which were 12 weeks, 18 weeks and 22 weeks My MW basically gave little excuses just so i could see bubs and try to find out sex of my shy bubs although they were valid excuses my last MWs that i had with my first son would not refer unless it was a very good reason I have another one booked for in 2 weeks just so i can see bubs face which i didnt get to see much of due to a grumpy scan guy and cheeky bubs

Hehe that's the worst of the scans lol...getting up afterwards with a full bladder!

I was going to agree with Emma, don't go ahead and get one too early because everything is so tiny that it could cause you unnecessary concern. The first part of the pregnancy certainly seems to drag though, I understand how you're feeling! In Palmy Nth scans are not usual until 20 weeks

The radiologist I saw for my dating scan at 6.5 wks, said it's best to have one after 7 weeks, as prior to that it's dificult to accurately predict dates and often they can't pick up a heart beat that early. Saying that though, we did get a good heart beat, but the dates were quite out, compared to our 12 wk scan.

Oh yay MeganGrace! Its so exciting to see that little heart beat ahy! Wow 11mm, mine was only 6-7mm at 6 weeks and 2 days! I asked the scan lady, do you think the baby would measure larger than normal at this early stage as my DH is 6ft 4, so I am expecting a very long baby! Apparently it has nothing to do with the growth measurement!

hahhaha Peachy that is so funny! I have a very good friend in the UK who is 5ft3 and a tiny wee thing, and her hubby is a giant of a man (not fat just solid) and is 6ft5!! She was HUGE suring her pregnancy (in proportion to her size!!) and was very very worried about the size of her baby! Her gorgeous wee man ended up weighing about 7lbs I think - so not too bad! He was very long though!
