It'll take me a month just to read it! I'm half way thru his Russia book (can't remember the title offhand). Started it when I was pregnant with Maya and still wading thru!
And thanks for clearing that up Liz - I was a little confused initially but when I read the author's acknowledgements I kind of gathered it was fiction.

got my copy from the library yesterday and am half way thru chapter 2 now. so far so good. after reading the translators notes i wondered if it might be a bit "stiff" but can see now that i am reading it from a young girls perspective that the style changes as it is very simplistic and basic.
how bout everyone else? finished the book yet or just going to get it out on video?

dont bother, thats just my opinion tho.
it isnt my normal genre, i like sci fi/fantasy, crime and the occasional barbara cartland. so take my thoughts with a grain of sand if you wish.
i thought the writing very simplistic (not always a bad thing tho), very slow to get to the point and the main character always seemed to be comparing things to fish or rocks or sticks.? i was very disappointed to find that it was really a badly written romance and the ending didnt satisfy me at all. i did however find some bits interesting and felt embarrassed for nobu near the end. another good point i suppose was that there wasnt endless descriptions of scenery, which can get tedious and the characters were all well described so i could picture them quite well.
i wont be reading any more of his books tho.

Well done Deb! I am about halfway - its taking me a long time to read, but I do want to see how it turns out. Yes she does compare a lot to fish etc!!

well i am about a quarter of the way through, up to when she becomes a novice, and i am quite enjoying it so far. it is slow to get into, but it does draw you in. it is a slower pace of writing, i think this is to illustrate the slower and "genteel" life back then. (god this sounds like a really really bad school essay haha)
i havent seen the movie, but am enjoying the book. if i finish it this week i will treat myself to the movie at the weekend

I read the book long time ago. When I was working for whitcoulls. I though the book was great....when the movie came out..I was a bit dissapointed but it was a good movie.
Movies are never as good as the book. Watch the movie then read the book, you get soo much more out of it.
I loved the book "Sleepers" it was just tooo good...and yet the movie is so-so.
I couldnt read London, Russia etc....to big and not my kinda book.

finished it this morning, i found it good, but the ending is a big of an anticlimax. it is sucha slow pace and you feel like it is winding towards something - winding, winding and then it ends. i was expecting a bit more.
but i do think it is beautifully written, so descriptive and amazing to think women live like this! i happened to watch a documentary on the doc channel about modern day geisha, its nice to know this tradition isnt being lost completely.

Warning, dont read if you havent finished yet, may give a few things away!! Dont say I didnt warn you
I had thought this was going to be one of those books that didn't turn out with the girl getting the guy. I felt so sorry for Nobu, but did get warm fuzzies that the Chairman did care all along. So did she have a son? It all wrapped up pretty quicky with not much happening I thought - definitely agree that it was an anticlimax.

i think she did, well thats how i read it anyway. but wasnt going to talk about it. either that, or she was removing herself from the situation so the future son in law would have no excuse not to marry and become the heir. i guess having someone to take over the family business would be really important then. coz what if she had stayed and she had a baby to the chairman?

Can I join in too? If you're still looking for a book for May can I suggest one? 'The Time Traveller's Wife' by Audrey Niffenegger. Back blurb is this:
This is the extraordinary love story of Clare and Henry who met when Clare was six and Henry was was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-two and Henry was thirty. Impossible, but true, because Henry suffers from a rare condition where his genetic clock periodically resets and he finds himself pulled suddenly into his past or future. In the face of this force they can neither prevent nor control, Henry and Clare's struggle to lead normal lives is both intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.
Just a suggestion though, happy to go along with anything!
