My baby is allergic to banana How is that even possible, I thought banana was a safe food!

Her exczema has really flared up in the last few days, she has big patches around her eyes like a panda. I couldn't think what might be causing it until this afternoon when I was giving them some pureed banana for lunch and Mercedes broke out in blisters all over her chin while I was feeding them Then it occurred to me that I only introduced banana to them on Monday, so that's probably what is exacerbating her exczema as well.

This is what her face looked like (it's kind of hard to see in the pic tho)

So no more banana for her Sienna seems fine tho. I was just really surprised - I have never heard of anyone being allergic to banana before! When I checked the "safe foods" list we got from the dietician tho I was amazed to see banana on the "high risk" list along with milk, peanuts etc. coz banana was Maya's first food and she was fine with it. I always thought it was safe!

Wow poor wee bubba.

We were just told by plunket yesterday that we can take Tyrell before he is 1 to find out exactly what he is allergic too. Although it is private and first consultation is at least $250.00!
As we are waiting to go private for his squint we might wait a little longer to test all allergies. (If you go public you have to wait till they are 1 and then you just joing th waiting list)

Sorry to hear wee Tyrell has allergies too, there seems to be so many more kids with allergies now that even just 4 years ago when Maya was a baby.

We elected to go private (we have medical insurance) and the girls saw the specialist at 4 mths and the dietitian at 5 mths. Mercedes had a cows milk RAST dine at 3 weeks that was negative (but not conclusive due to age). They are booked in to have skin prick testing done at 9 mths (July) then will see the dietitian again depending on what the test results are as to what we can start introducing then.

I always knew we'd have to avoid the 'big' things like milk, egg, wheat etc. but I'm a bit spooked about the banana thing! It seems to be always Mercedes that reacts tho, she's had 3 'big' reactions so far, Sienna hasn't had any.

Annie - can you eat bananas OK now?

Banana and pineapple are both latex food allergies Emma!! There are a few others as well like avocado and UGH I can't even scratch my brain hard enough to think of the other fruit/vege. Take a look into it!! Oh I found it! Kiwi fruit (I know it was green and fruity!). Lots to look up online there is a tonne of information about it. My friend has this allergy which she only got in her late teens. Your munchkin will probably grow out of it

Is it sad that I know so much about feeding your kid and still broke all the rules with Olivia? Oh well, I am only a first time mum once, got to do it wrong the first time. Banana was Olivia's first food.

Amy, we took Isla to see a Paed yesterday through the public system, and she had a RAST blood test done for the main allergens (dairy, wheat, egg, peanut, soy). She is 5 1/2 months old. We waited about 6 weeks for her appt to see the specialist. I guess maybe it depends on where u live, and what your DHB fund in that area , as to when they will do it. I would probably try to find out for sure how long u will have to wait to have the tests etc, before going private. Good luck

yep I was allergic to banana when i was little, the few times i have had it raw since then I have always ended up throwing up. I no longer even try, anything with uncooked banana makes me terribly sick - have to watch those nice fruit smoothies and stuff like that. Funny though.. Cooked banana like banana cake, i am usually ok with small amounts as long as there's no big lumps of it in there.

We have Sthn Cross but not sure what they cover...I might give them a call next week. Our GP said our area is only covered from 12months.
We thought we would try and sort out his squint first. (on waiting list since begin of DEC for public) Then go and get his allergies tested....bit scared as to what they do.

We are having trouble with his teeth so don't want to pile it on him all at once. But also want to get it sorted....if you know what I mean.

Sorry to hear Emma Poor Mercedes...

We are finally having a long period with no reactions (touch wood) after thinking she was no intolerant of soy, but have been too chicken to introduce anything new. Our dietician appointment has been put off again... Will get there eventually!

Don't be scared! I found the whole process of testing with Maya far less scary than I thought I would be, and far easier than just trying to eliminate things with no idea what was causing problems. They usually do a RAST blood test (for milk/egg/peanut/soy and possibly wheat, not sure on that one) and then they do skin prick testing. Maya never even cried during the skin prick tests, they just drip a tiny drop of a whole lot of different things (some foods and some environmental like dustmite etc.) then prick each drop with a little pin thingie (Maya's paed calls it a prickly stick) and see if they react.

Maya never cried once in all the times she had the skin pricks, the actual RAST blood test she cried a wee bit but it wasn't so bad.

And yay for no reactions Aimee! Long may it continue - hopefully this is a sign she is starting to outgrow her allergies!

Interesting you should say that - my brother has anaphalaxis to pineapple and is also allergic to latex (he is a chef and has to use special gloves instead of the standard latex ones coz they literally 'melt' his hands).

Would love to know more if you can remember where you found that info!

amy - I would get Tyrell allergy tested if there are suspicions of allergy, as like Emma said, it is so much easier once you know what they ARE allergic to, rather than just guessing. We assumed that Hannah was only allergic to milk, but after testing it is also egg (both white and yolk) and nuts, which explains why she kept getting eczema even on a dairy free diet!! She has only been skin pricked for foods, will have a RAST for those at 2, then 3 etc to see if she is outgrowing them. We never saw a specialist or paediatrician - my lovely GP just gave us a form for the skin testing at MedLab and has referred us to the hospital dietician. Good luck.
