Yesterday was my brother's 12th birthday. We live in Hamilton, and my family live in Katikati, but my mum works at Waikato Hospital (she's a nurse). Mum came round here Saturday night for dinner before driving back to Kati, and ended up taking Kiya with her!

We enjoyed our child-free house yesterday... maybe a little too much 'cause after some fun , I had massive abdominal pain, then the contractions started... random strong contractions every 1.25 hours through the night - kept waking me up! They've been roughly 1 hour apart since 5:30 this morning... I've talked to my midwife, basically she's not worried and neither am I... either the contractions will stop on their own and its all been a false alarm or they will get closer together and Baby will arrive! I've got an appointment with my midwife tomorrow morning at 9am for my weekly check, so we'll see what happens between now and then.

Nathaniel is slightly worried... not about me and Baby but rather about his test on Wednesday night! I have to admit, I'm a little worried about that too... if he misses it, he's supposed to have a medical certificate, but we can't get one issued for him when I'm the one in labour!

really? You would think your wife/partner being in labour would be adequate reason for missing a test? Is it at the univeristy? Usually they are pretty good about giving grades despite missing tests, especially if you have a good record until then.

Thanks everyone...

So my contractions were 1hr apart until about 12:30, then there were 2 half an hour apart, then one 20 minutes later, then one 10 minutes later (at 2pm) and they've been 10 minutes apart since, lasting 40 seconds. We met my midwife at the hospital just after 3, she hooked me up to monitor the contractions and Baby's heartbeat... at 4:30, they sent us home! They are not going to stop the labour, but because I'm not in any pain I think the register didn't realise how strong my contractions are! My midwife does - cause she asked me about my labour with Kiya and I had no pain during the first stages of labour with her either. The register said it looked like irritable uterus, and that could last up to 3 weeks before delivery, but he thinks I'll deliver tonight or tomorrow. We think he was covering his bases.

Right now, my contractions are 6-8 minutes apart and still lasting at least 40 seconds! We're playing the "wait and see" game, and hoping Baby hurries up!

Nathaniel has let his lecturer know what's going on... it's the first (of 3) test for the paper, so an agretate mark may not be possible, but we're sure they'll come up with something, given the circumstances! He may just be able to study on Wednesday and sit it after all, as things are speeding up (I think!)

This is getting a little (ok, a lot!) frustrating... last night I was having contractions 3 minutes apart lasting over a minute each one... my midwife came and checked me out... still not dilated.

It's become a wait and see game... right now, I'm having contractions 10 minutes apart lasting from 60-90 seconds, and they're fairly strong. Nathaniel and I are going to see what we can do to hurry things along a little

Hello, this is Nathaniel, Becca's husband.

Just thought I'd update you all on what's going on. Becca last night has many contractions 3 minutes apart. Most lasting on average about 2 minutes, the odd one getting to 3 or 4 minutes. We think the 4 minute ones were probably another straight after the first. Her cervix however is not dilated at all. Nothing has changed. She has an "irritable uterus". This seems strange to both of us, because all we've read about this says that the contractions of irritable uterus should be irregular. These are not irregular at all, however they do tend to be slower during the day, and closer together in the evening. So yeah, that's what's happening. Could go on for another 3 weeks apparently - we certainly hope not...

We'll keep you all posted, and thanks for the support.

Nathaniel

can they induce at this stage? or does that only start the contractions and the cervix has to dilate naturally????

Posted By: daikini
Date Posted: 13 April 2005 at 7:17pm
IF things progress to active labour (where the contractions are actually doing some good and thinning and dilating the cervix) then the powers that be will not stop the delivery from happening. Otherwise, it's a wait and see game... I don't think they'll induce me unless I go overdue - usual story of "anything between 37 and 42 weeks is considered full term" blah blah blah...

We've done a little research on "irritable uterus" and "active labour" and the one thing we can try at the moment is that during active labour it doesn't matter what position you are in, the contraction will occur and at the same strength. If you are not in true, active labour, the contraction will lessen in strength or even not occur when you are lying down - particularly if you are lying on your left side (but I think that's just because the most common position for baby is LOA). We noticed that my contractions would fade off when I lay down for my midwife to examine me so... yeah.

We are so ready for this baby to be born! When all this started, I guess Nathaniel and I got ourselves emotionally ready so now we're just getting impatient. Today, I've had contractions 1 hour apart all day... so it's been fairly peaceful after the last couple of days!

Hi Becca.
How are you feeling now. Its been a couple of days since your last posting. It just seems so wrong to let you go through so much for so long. Are they all a bunch of sadists. Isn't there something they can do for you??. Either induce you or stop the pain. It is only a matter of days anyway until your due.

Sorry, everyone, I've been away for a few days - our church sent Nathaniel and I away for 2 nights (and some friends took Kiya), then we went to Tauranga to visit with family, and for my Dad's graduation.

No, no baby yet... I wish he would hurry up though! I've been having contractions 1hr apart since Wednesday last week... frustrating to the extreme! We are so ready for this baby now... Kiya keeps coming up to me and telling my tummy that it's time for baby to be born!

We appreciate the interest and concern everyone... we had a great time away!

I don't need painkillers - I'm not in any pain! Just very uncomfortable. I had minimal pain with Kiya as well, none at all during the first stage, it wasn't until I was pushing that it hurt at all, and then not much. The odd really strong one will wake me, but I get back to sleep really quickly. Its just really frustrating, waiting and wanting something to happen and feeling all these contractions and knowing they aren't doing a single bit of good!

Hey funny you should suggest that lizzle - I just went and brought some raspberry leaf tea.. I'm usually a milo drinker. I never used it last time, so can anyone tell me how often you're supposed to have it? I know they don't recommend it till after 36 weeks because it can put some people into labour, I'm keeping it till then anyway - not gonna have any till i have at least finished assignments i need to do, just in case. lol.

i just drunk about three cups a day. I was fully dilated in two and a half hours....also, as for it inducing labour, my midwife had to break my waters two weeks after due date

Posted By: mum2paris
Date Posted: 24 April 2005 at 1:47pm
lol, having your waters broken will probably be why you were dialated so quickly.. cos i was the same, except my waters broke by themselves, 5 days before my due date. once your waters break it not only forces baby onto your cervix with no cushioning, but also the fluid is full of all the lovely hormones to make you dilate quicker, well that's the theory. I just thought that it can't hurt to "tone my uterus" lol.. seen as it's my second kid it might be getting a bit slack.. lol i dunno.. sounded good in theory.

I think the recommended dosage for Red Raspberry Leaf Tea is 2-3 cups per day in the last trimester, but if prone to early labour then wait till the the last 5 weeks. Also if you take 5W herbal supplements, it is supposed to do wicked things for one's uterus toning and other such good stuff to aid in delivery and recovery afterwards. Have heard rave reviews about it anyway....

I think that is what i am scared of. i dunno why, cos last time it was intense, but it wasn't pain, just a really icky cold nervous feeling.. as i've said to Becs, I keep thinking i'm gonna end up having this one at home cos i didn't really feel much till the last few cms last time.. i only rung the midwife for some reassurance..so glad i did.

I've had a heap of pressure in my hips the last few days which is making me a bit jumpy, lol, but apart from a little nesting nothing else.. so I don't think you have any worry about me having baby before you Becca. lol. If it did, I think even i would be pissed.. cos you've been having contractions for ages now.. it just wouldn't be right!! Still, off to see midwife tomorrow so we'll see whats happening with this monkey then.

In answear to your question Xandersmum My first and second labour (can't count the third C-section) were completly different. With my first the contractions came on hard and fast but lasted 9 hours and he took an hour to push out. The second I didn't even know I was in labour until 1/2 and hour before he was born and he took two pushes. We just made it to the hospital. You guys will probably find you be heaps more relaxed this time around as you know sort of what's going to happen. It's definately not as scary the second time around.

Don't stress too much Becs, I saw my midwife on the Wed morning and Maya wasn't engaged, and went into labour that afternoon.

I must be mad. Abby's only 4 months old and you guys make it sound like so much fun, I almost want another one. It's funny how with abby being our last I'm so excited waiting for you guys to have yours. Hmm maybe I need a life!! You forget so fast how miserable you can feel right at the end when your just waiting and waiting for things to happen. Good luck girls.

She's a girl, she'll come out. It seems to be boys that like to linger around in there. Typical males, never in a hurry...

Maya did the same thing - posterior, then turned anterior, then engaged, then FINALLY came out. Pity the whole process took 41 hours...

I've been told that second babies are much less likely to be posterior, and I cling to that coz I don't want another posterior pregnancy and labour next time round! I spent the last 3 mths hunched over a beanbag trying to shift the little monkey, and she waited until the last possible minute!

lol.this monkey was inj a real good position but she decided to switch sides on me.she is ROL leaning towards being posterior so I have to do a mad dash to try turning her.

I was told to lean forward over a bean bag, or spend time on my hands and knees. It apparantly gives bubs more room to turn.

And I just decided that I am not Supermum, I work 40 hours a week and only have Maya in care 22 hours, so I have to make up the rest of teh hours at night, so....

I hired a cleaner! Hehe, they have made a whole long list of things that the cleaner will do, much more than I do when I clean, and they are coming fortnightly starting tomorrow! I am so excited!

I want a cleaner too! I might ask the doctor about an allowance i think im entitled to with Jayde, because of the extra care she needs. Its $35 a week but that should either cover a cleaner or maybe a day for alyssa in a creche so i get time to clean.
