Our son is walking all over the place aided by either a wall or furniture.
We have been told to put shoes on him....he hasn't worn any until now.
I thought it was best to wait till they were walking...BUT my mother is saying we need to get them on him now to help him walk and stop his feet from going too wide...? (lets not discuss my mom) I would love some opninions as to when you put shoes on your children....?

My daughter walked at 9months, and I didn't bother with shoes at all. I think she got a pair of Bobux from my sister and she wore those until a year old... If he's happy in bare feet or socks; I can't see that being a problem???

I waited until my girls were walking well barefoot and then went with good supporting shoes, make sure they are flexible if you know what I mean. And if he has Samoan blood, um, doesn't your mum understand that he will probably get wide feet regardless of what you do?

my mum actually told me it was bad for their feet to be in resricting shoes until they were walking well without them. i don't know why though. i didn't have mikey in shoes until well after he was walking, it did help that it was summer though so he didn't need them.

I was told the same as Ella. Only soft soled shoes like Bobux, or socks and bare feet until they are walking confidently unsupported. My Ella's feet are quite narrow and she didn't wear shoes, I'd be inclined to think its an old wive's tale.

Maya walked at 10 mths, and I put her in Bobux when she was outside walking and just either slippers or those socks with the feet grip thingies on the bottoms inside. She didn't wear actual shoes till about 18 mths.

I never put shoes on my child in the first year. She started walking at 11 months and still didnt have shoes on. Only after her first birthday and I take it off as soon as we are home. So we just use it when she is out and about.

I feel it is healthier for them to be barefoot.

you have to be very careful with their feet cause the bones are so soft and wearing the wrong shoes can do lots of damage. neither of my boys had shoes till they were about 1.5...and sometimes even now i d otn bother with them. not wearing shoes wont make his feet too wide.

Amy i havent had a chance to see what slippers i have here yet...have a closed full of boys clothes and shoes tho so it has to be done at some stage.

Get some Bobux if you want to, or something similar. Have a look on trademe as they often sell brand new ones there for less than the shops. Or even just some socks with the grippy bit on the bottom. I did like the Bobux at home as Ella started walking in the winter and it was too cold for no socks, and in socks she would slip everywhere on the floor.

If Bobux are too expensive there are the "copy" brands out there - I've seen them at the well known department stores...

Wow that is awsome thanks heaps to all of you who answered.
I will carry on with socks. I have been to the Bobux website and they have some great designs...might look into getting some of them.

Hey no worries re slippers we went to the Warehouse yesterday and got a pair for $6. Not that they stay on for more than a second! LIterally.

I put shoes on Olivia for going out and usually take them off if she is hooning about the furniture. I think that you should wait till you think he needs them. Not before. I can understand where your mum is coming from, some kids hate shoes! Better to get them used to it before they can tell you where to shove it.

I have found those little aquashoes - with flexi bottoms, fantastic for Taine - they are flexible enough that he can walk really comfortably, but also protect his feet from all the prickles and gravel we have around the place. he can also wear socks under them if it's particulary cold. I love them!

I only put shoes (soft soled sp?) on piper when we are outside somewhere as she now refuses to be carried anywhere and just bare feet at home.

Thats a good idea! and I bet they're a fraction of the price of a pair of bobux! (says she who just bought two pairs for Caitlin )
