excuse the bad grammar!
As some of you may have read, I became an aunty..again on Friday. was talking to my SIL about the birth and she was saying when baby was about five minutes old, he turned purple and stopped breathing. the resus team came in and resusitated him and now he's okay. Anyway, now of course she is paranoid and whenever he sleeps over ten minutes she goes and gives him a little prod. But my question is, her mw said that while it was scary, it was actually not uncommon for babies to do. I have NEVER heard of that, and was wondering if it was her trying to placate SIL, or just not good at picking up things. Anyone know about this or have heard of it? |

| OMG that sounds incredibly scary. Never heard of that. Is she is Gisborne? My sil had a baby in Gisborne 2 weeks ago, was wondering if they had the same midwife cos sil's midwife seems to tell her some strange as stuff! |

my mums friends baby did that, he was a little older though, my mum went in to see her friend and noticed her baby was blue and had to resusitate him herself while screaming fro nurses to come.
it isnt common as far as I know, but my mw did tell me sometimes babies forget to breath when they so new. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

that and they usually have all that goo in their chests.. we all know that usually it takes a bit to come out. sometimes it just comes up in big amounts and can get stuck which will stop air getting in and out, hence turning purply and needing a good suction and some o2 and resus. We get lots of babies come in to the unit with the same thing, some from postnatal, others once they get home - they come in for observation but usually it's just that they have a whole lotta gunk in their lungs which can take a bit to get up. still doesn't stop it being freaky, especially when they choke on it.. even i get a bit freaked when i am turning baby over and patting away while they bring it all up. ick ick and ick.. Babies turn purply blue and "dusky" yellowish around the lips very easily - it's the first way to tell if they are not getting enough oxygen through - might be from having their head to far forward (ie chin on chest) or too far back, both can cut off the airway, sometimes even cuddling them all bunched up against you after birth, you don't actually realise that they aren't int he best position.
It is very common, and while it is scary, if he is showing all other signs good, then i know it will take a while for her to get over, and that's fine. Maybe, if she feels so strongly, an apnoea monitor might take her feel a little better, i think you can sometimes hire them short term, or maybe a good pressie for them if they don't already have one. ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja

Aparantly I did it twice as a newborn, scared the heck out of Mum, she was scared to take me home. I never did it again, adn they just said I 'forgot' to breath. Weird, but Im told it does happen a bit. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Alan did it the first night and my M/w was not there, but the m/w on duty at hospital said its cause he did not get a big cry out when he was born and clear his lungs proper. I was like you SIL I did not sleep in hte hospital unless Pete was there to watch Alan I even made hte nurse up at the ward look after him so I could sleep I was really paranoid till I got so tired and went home. ------------- Deborah Mum to:

Kaia stopped breathing at birth, but I was not really in a state to know what was going on and it didn't dawn on me til after.
Quinn used to 'hold' his breathe and pass out for a couple of seconds, he'd stopped breathing then his eyes would roll back into his head. Then he'd wake up and be ok but very drowsy. They are both ok, very scarey stuff tho. ------------- Anna http://lilypie.com">

I remember the girl in the bed next to me at Birthcare running out of the room screaming and her baby was making this funny noise and mucous was pouring out of his mouth like the exorcist. The midwives told her it was perfectly normal, that he'd just swallowed some amniotic fluid, and almost made her feel silly for panicking, but it was freaky as to watch!
Both my gremlins were blue at birth, the paed said it's coz they were preterm, but they both came out screaming so quickly turned pink. Mercedes used to go blue quite frequently as a newborn, but she got over it. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)
