Oh boy...prams vs 3 wheeler buggies vs infant carriers with wheels.
And with the brand and price war where does a first time mum start?
I know I want a lightweight easily collapsible model, one thats good from birth to toddlerdom, but beyond that its all very confusing.
Advice please? Which models do I avoid? What should I get? Help.

I bought a Babywise 3 wheeler from the Warehouse for $200 when I was preg and it lasted about 18 mths (mind you I carted it to London, Australia etc. etc. so I certainly got my moneys worth!).
I have just replaced it with a Babylove 3 wheeler which I love. It is easily collapsible, but not that light. I drive a VW Polo which has to be about the smallest car ever, and it fits in the boot (just) because the back wheels snap easily on and off. It cost me $350, but you can get a toddler seat attachment which I thought might be useful next time round, and I love the swivel wheel.
I defintely prefer the 3 wheelers to the 4's (Mum and Dad have a 2nd hand 4 wheeler at their place for Maya), because we walk a lot and it goes on any surface and is even and easy to push.
Things I would look for: Handle height - can it be adjusted, is it high enough/too high. Whether the seat reclines all the way back for a newborn. Whether it has the option of a toddler attachment if you need one later on. Some also have clips to attach a newborn carseat which is kind of cool. Also, check if you can fold it with one hand coz this makes life a lot easier when you are balancing bubs, and what size it is when it folds ie. will it fit in the car.
Hope that helps.

Also, triple check the weight limit of the toddler seat attatchment if u plan on having a relativly close gap between 1 and 2.I got caught out with my pram (Bertini Shuttle),cost us $500 and didnt realise the 2nd seat only catered up to 15 kg and my boy is already passd that weight and #2 is due well today.
My advice is to go for the likes of the 3 wheeler pedigree type which 2nd seat apparently caters for up to 22kg?? correct me if I am wrong ladies.

The Babylove toddler seat is up to 20kg. I think the Pedigree one holds more, but you have to have the fourth wheel conversion which is a big mission, and costs a lot more.

I intitially had the triton trekker 3 wheeler ($600+) from pedigree. It was sooo heavy and a real mission to take anywhere. Then i found out the toddler seat plus attachment cost about $130. So i sold it and brought a emajulanga (sp) pram from trade me with a toddler seat for $100. I love it soooo much. It has big wheels so i can take it anywhere and i also love the fact that i can have the baby facing me.
Another thing to consider with three wheelers is that most of them dont lie the baby completely flat. Good luck with your decision.

except the phil and teds one.. that one is great! yaya.. we get ours in a few days. I am crazy now.. lol.
we went and spent ages trying out buggies this time. if you can, take a friend with, who has a kiddie and try them in the buggies you like to get a feel for them. but basically, don't just buy cheaper on impulse.. do your research and wait for it to come down in price.. lol.
go to different shops, spend ages there, fold the buggys up and down, do it one handed, with a bag on your shoulder, lol, fiddle around with everything, so you know what features it has.. and ask heaps of questions! thehsop assistants should be more than willing to help if it means they get a sale... if they are rude.. then go buy the same buggy somewhere else! lol

I like 4 wheels. But I agree height and big wheels and weight are most important. We brought a mothers choice one down from $200 to $130 at the baby factory, and It's the best pram we've had. It wouldn't handle a toddler seat though

We had a 4 wheeled pram with Blair but i didn't like it much they don't seem to be able to handle much weight i think it was more of an impulse buy then anything else.
Now we are having twins i wanted something light weight and something i could go walking with so we brought a Mountain Buggy i heard lots of goods things about them if only they weren't so expensive although we did get it on sale so that was good.

Gosh sooo much info....didn’t even think about some things when I went looking for one.
We saw a three wheeler that we liked, it was easy to maneuver....and we asked all the basics like is this for baby to toddler...blah blah. But never folded to see how big it is or can I do it with one hand, we didn’t even check the brand name (pathetic I know) ....thanks guys for all the info.

Hey thanks folks, lots of good advice. It seems that maybe we should go for the 3 wheeler as hubby and I love walking and travelling. Though The Man's eyes were like saucers at the prices of them in the stores. Will try to get one second hand...
As we are going for 2 kids in 3 years it seems that it would be worthwhile too to get one that I can add an extra toddler seat? (Did I get that bit right?) Those buggies seemed really pricey.. around $600!
So:
3 Wheeler
Check max weight
One handed collapse
Added seat for second kid (?)
One that can fully recline for newborn
Or carseat clip-on
Handle height adjustment
Ok I think I got it all.....did I forget anything?
Thanks so much folks, huge help...next question.
Anyone know of one for sale secondhand or on sale like that?!

yeah trade me is a good place to look.Another thing to think about too with the toddler seat attached(when u have 2 babes) does it have a rain and/or suncover that covers both children.

That's a good point becs.. especially if you do a heap of walking.. don't want the poor older kid getting sunburnt/saturated... oooh also. watch with some buggies. I nannied for a family that had a pedigree 3 wheeler, with the swivel wheel on the front.. they had a toddler seat attached on it too.. and it was lethal!! seriously, if you go round corners too sharply, or hit a bump in the footpath, the wheel turns, and the buggy tips! - that is a seriously freaky experience.

Janine, did it have the fourth wheel? Coz the Pedigree ones you are supposed to add a fourth wheel, but some people don't and the lady at the Baby Factory told me that it is seriously dangerous coz the fourth wheel is what balances the extra weight at the front.

I dont feel prepared even after that! And yes I did watch about 5 mins of Oprah yesterday...too scary for a upcoming mum to have to watch the whole show. Surely it wont be that bad?! Hope?

I watched the Supernanny series when I was in Australia (it hasn't got here yet) and some of the kids on it were shocking! Hittng their parents, swearing, screaming. But the silly thing is that they only behave like that because their parents have taught/allowed them too, and then the parents complain. the Supernanny lady has some really sensible ideas tho.

I found that with the kids i nannied.
one family, the oldest girl liked to walk around eating food (indian food.. i.e. bowls of dahl etc.. and she always spilt them!!) so i had the thing when i was there of only eating at the table.. she would be like "oh, well i don't want it then" i was fine with that.. she'd come back after 5 mins and sit up the table and eat it.
seriously.. as soon as mum walks in the door it's terror time.. so frustrating cos they had been angels for me.. but also made me glad to leave at the end of the day. actually felt like they were doing their kids injustice by just letting them behave any way they wanted once mummy and daddy got home.
another family, when i first started working there, their 2 yr old would jump all over, and strangle the 9 mth old if you put him down to play. that put me off having boys.

I have a bertini steerable shuttle.
4 wheeler, inflated tyres (great for walking) and feels very stable. Height adjustable handle - great because I have it low and hubby likes it high.
We will be looking at getting the toddler seat, all going well it wont be long before #2 is on the way for us and Ella is reasonably small so she should be light enough for the toddler seat.

Hey, I'm a mother of a lovely gentle boy......Boys, like girls, are only a product of the parenting practises they are brought up around. He has never had a violent streak or anything close to it, unlike his 4 yr old cousin (girl) who likes to bash everything in sight.
All children are beautiful creatures and as the SuperNanny said, a child is only as bad as the parents allow them to be, whatever sex they are!

Whew, that's good news kerryberry. I'm one of four girls so have NO idea how to raise boys. Although my sister has the most beautiful 1 yr old boy (2nd child). He's absolutely gentle and sweet. Though I've never seen how a first-child boy may react to a new addition to the family..its all a learning curve I guess.

Roksana, I had a looong scan at 14 weeks, (30 minutes) because I had a tipped uterus at the first scan. So I think the radiologist had a good look while he was waiting to do a nuchal fold measurement. Meanwhile I was worried my precious bubby was frying!!!
If your bubby is in the right position the radiologist should be able to tell you maybe?
Good luck,

Do you think having allot of scans are bad? My Dad seems to think so??!!! I had so many now, One at 7 weeks (to see how far along I really was), 8weeks (bleeding), 10 weeks (bleeding), 12weeks (high risk clinic) and 14 weeks (high risk clinic). And another one in 2 weeks time (anatomy scan).

Roksana, I have read (um the entire library?!)an amazing book, it's called Hands of Love by Dr Carol Phillips. My chiropractor lent it to me. It mentions ultrasounds as having never gone through an extensive research process, but the book allows parents to make their own choices. It does however make one powerful point. Ultrasound technically should be safe for baby (painless) as the amniotic fluid protects baby..what the sound waves/ doppler beam travel through. BUT ultrasound methods during LABOR when the waters have broken don't give baby any protection...
a perspective to think about aye?

Roksana - if i were you (and wanted to know the sex) i would highly reccommend you wait til you are 18 - 20 weeks (preferably closer to 20 weeks) to have your scan. I know it is a fact that things are MUCH clearer then (both for abnormalities and sex. I was in your position and was desparate to know what sex im having as i have four boys - and guess what - im having a very obvious little GIRL yay!! (read a dream come true in the sharing stories bit) I waited til 19 1/2 weeks - after all you wouldnt want to be told you are having one sex and end up being wrong!! Good luck!

a friend of ours had to have heaps of scans because of a medical problem, and asked the sex each time... the first few times, she was told they were having a girl, then later they were told it was a boy. well, IT WAS A BOY. am very scepticle about finding out. we have had 2 scans and a total of 3 people confirm the sex.. and still we are nervous.

nmaraea, you do need 2 hands to collapse the bertini, well I guess you could do 1 side at a time but easier with 2. Kinda safer that way I reckon. Lightweight... mmm Im only little, I can manage to carry it a small way when its all folded up, its easy enough to lift in and out of the boot. The best thing to do is to go and try one in the shop! We got ours second hand, it was barely used, a dark sea green(?) with grey edges.

My family tried the "wait till it's born" lark, an old Irish superstition, but I wasn't going to have my baby sleeping in a suitcase just because it was 'bad luck' to buy things before she was born! I didn't even wait till I was past the 3 mth mark, although I do remember wondering how I would cope looking at all the clothes etc. if I lost the baby.
Just about prams, I have the Baby Love three wheel (it's red, not sure what the model name is) and it is great. I am in love with it. On the down side it is pretty heavy, but it does fold small (when you snap the back wheels off, but in a station wagon you'd be fine), and comes standard with bootcover, neck support for newborn and raincover.

yes it is grey and red....I thought it was really good. But looked big to me when collapsed, or may be the lady at baby factory was useless....she said she was back from a holiday, and cant remember how to do it...she got it at the end.
Good...at least I know one person likes it! Its so reasonable too...$299 on special.
Yes I think I would be shattered if I lost the baby and had to look at baby things....but my parents are going to keep it at their place until later...so that's good. However I am positive that my baby will be fine!!!

My nana went to farmers and bought me a three-wheel steelcraft thing. The farmers girl was bit dim and scanned thewrong price. So nana got a $400 pushchair for $70!!!! Of course now she thinks she's on crimwatch or something and won't go into farmers anymore.
the pushchair itself is fantastic but a real b$^&h to haul up four flights of stairs
|
Posted By: Maya
Date Posted: 16 May 2005 at 8:05pm
I looked at the Steelcraft ones too, they are pretty good. I must admit that I am glad I had my crappy old buggy when I was in London because it was a mission to haul up and down the Underground stairs, but the new one is much heavier and would be even worse!
Roksana, the Babylove one doesn't have a one hand fold, which is a bit of a pain, but it does fold pretty easily, and it has a big storage basket underneath too which is good. But you can also buy the newborn capsule to snap on and off and the Toddler seat is only $80, much cheaper than the Pedigree ones if you are thinking of having your kids pretty close together. It is big when it is folded, but like I said the back wheels pop off with just the push of a button (but they lock on really well so won't fall off) and I can get it in the boot of my VW Polo which is absolutely tiny. I couldn't get my old buggy in there.
Can you tell I love my pram!

ohhh...may be the one we saw is different...because the lady said that you can't attach a toddler seat to it....hmmmm!
I will do more research! But the one we saw was grey and red and the lady said that it does not come in any other color. And yes, you do need two hands to fold it.
I do plan to have another baby with in 3 years so a toddler seat would be good, however we could always sell this one and buy a new one (I like new things).

hey wow, that price is pretty good. and if you are selling stuff after only a couple of years, you can usually get a pretty good resale price.. everyone always needs baby stuff and really, most of the time it's in good knick.
Mike sold his first thing on trade-me last night.. after only starting the auction half an hour before he got a buy-now buyer.. for his subs for his car - he brought them but never put them in cos i foundout we were having paris. but he was so happy to sell them. he then said, "hey, once baby is old enough and i've had the chop, we can get rid of all our baby stuff on there!" i told him he's getting a bit far ahead of himself. lol.

At least it's him talking about getting the chop, if I even mention it to Willie he suddenly goes all deaf...
It definitely sounds like the same one Roksana, I would say the lady doesn't know what she is on about saying it doesn't have a toddler seat, coz they showed it t ome, and showed me how it fits on when I bought my pram.

Okay...the Baby love Pram is called Pioneer 2.
And yes, it is designed to hold a toddler seat....however apparently some people had some problems with it and Baby Factory decided not to sell the toddler seat.
So that's the story......Oh well!!!

lol Emma, Mike was very sure that he only ever wanted one child.. but was always told by me that we were having two (he's an only child.. he's biased). we don't want any more than that, and he wants to get it done as soon as possible.
only problem now is finding someone who will agree to do it on someone so young with only 2 kids.
My doc did mention the option when i had some health probs after paris, so hopefully he is still keen on the idea. Our family is very limited in the conraception we can take due to increased risks for clots and other probs. (hence why my little sis got preggers, she is VERY allergic to latex, and she has had tests etc and was told by our doc if she wanted to take the pill she would have to sign a waiver stating she was going against medical advice as there is some component in her blood that means it would be pretty dangerous for her to do so). I've never had tests, but never used the pill or anything.. all my sisters etc have had so many probs that I just haven't been bothered to try. here's hoping that family history will work in my favour.
(still, you don't hear of many guys actually eagerly awaiting the day they can get the chop) lol. I think the main reason he is so eager is yes, he wants no more kids, but i think he might have the impression he'll "get more" once it's been done. lololol.

Rob was very eager to have the chop and had it done! Family planning was the best price Janine, and they do them all the time, Rob said he wanted someone with lots of experience holding his boys.... Family planning had no problem doing it just asked alot of questions re what would he do if i died and he met someone knew, if one of the kids died etc. I guess they have to make sure they arnt going to want it reversed.
He rang his G.P about doing it first and she wanted me to go in for the consult. I told him to find someone else, I couldnt be bothered. Anyway what say should i have in if he got it done or not.

LOL, my mum nearly died having my youngest brother, so they decided on permanent contraception, and being Catholic my dad went to the priest and asked for advice. the priest said that because Mum wasn't Catholic she could have her tubes tied and it wouldn't be against the church. Hah, after having 4 children and a c section she told my Dad exactly where the church could stick that idea and sent him off for the chop.

Because of my blood disorder, they won't operate on me, so it'll be Nathaniel getting the chop instead... but not yet! We want another 3 kids yet, so we won't even be discussing it for a few years yet - especially as I've made it quite clear to Nathaniel that the earliest we'll start discussing ttc the next one is on Josiah's first birthday and NOT when Josiah is 3 months old!

we have already answered all those same questions ourselves Maria.. i think it is silly to ask them, but can see why they do. we are of the theory that if you want it reversed then it should be at your expense, and your risk that it doesn't work. Mike is adamnant that no matter what, he does not want kids after 30 and he would never want kids with another partner. he also said that no matter what, you can never replace your kids if something happened to them, and it wouldn't be fair on the new one if they had to live up to those expectations. I agree (although he puts it a hell of alot more bluntly than i ever would). 2 kids for us, no matter what. This pregnancy has been less than a breeze, and there's no way i really want to go through it again.. my health is getting worse each time. periods, and a whole host of other probs were terrible after i had paris, and had really only just come right before i conceived this one.
for those that wants heaps of kiddies.. good on you.. i came from a large family and it's great having someone always there to talk and play with.. but i don't think i could be mum to 5.

Same here Janine.....I come from a family of two. My brother is 9 years younger than me (because of mum's heart condition).
After that I decided no matter what age I am when I have my first child, I will have the next straight after (I mean a year or two apart).
And that is it!! I know my hubby would like 3, because they were 3 brothers...one died when he was 18....but no way I am having 3....even tho I love my hubby allot .
I always wanted a boy and a girl. but even if I have two of the same, I would not try for another. But

I'm one of 4, we had the whole people-mover thing going on. Mum wanted 6, but couldn't have any more. they even looked at adopting a couple more, but weren't able to, my Mum was just really 'called' to be a mum, it's all she ever wanted to do and she is good at it.
I'm not really naturally maternal I don't think, but having Maya has changed me a lot, I am a lot more patient, and I'm a better mum than I thought I would be, I thought I would be hopeless. But I had such a difficult pregnancy with her (morning sickness all thru, symphisis pubis dysfunction, bad heartburn....) that I don't know how many times I could go thru it again. I also couldn't have another baby too soon after Maya because I would never have coped with the morning sickness and a baby - I was so sick some days when I was preg that I physically could not get out of bed.
But if it's easier next time round I might reconsider...
And after my dreadful pregnancy and a long labour the actual birth was so easy I could do that 100 times over.

with transport.. lol, i think even with two kids you have so much stuff that you need a van! lol. i mean already when they grow up you need a bigger car for if they want friends to come round or go places with you.

After I went flatting they got a Mazda 626 instead... now that my sister is a teenager, and my brother a pre-teen, they've bought an Emena... hehehe - they originally got it so they could fit Kiya and me in as well on trips, but I think they will regret getting it, as it means there's no reason they can't have both grandkids at once!

Jase was told by a 'physic' that he would have 3 kids (2 boys 1 girl). So he is gripped by 'fulfilment fever'. I told him where his physic could stick her 3 fingers. I'm having 2 - period. Then he is on his way to the butchers. I also told him if he wanted a 3rd kid he could give birth himself. Although, in sounding so tough if I didn't have a girl second time round I might be tempted...I really want a boy and girl. Oh dear...

Yaye! 19 wks today, almost half way. I must admit, I have been eating a lot of chocolate this month (mind you, how is that different from me normally.) Do you think my baby will be born a chocoholic, maybe my breastmilk will be choco flavoured.
Anyway, went in to test steer the bertini 'steerable' shuttle (4 wheels), extremely difficult to 'steer' backwards, and it seems awfully wide. Does anyone have one who can tell me if this is all in my head. How does the Maclaren compare, I haven't seen any in shops to test out.

Well I really liked Pioneer 2 (3 wheeler) by Baby love. It has a rotating front wheel, which you can also lock so it does not rotate...but it was so flexible and easy to maneuver...I just fell in love with it. It also has a rain and sun protection cover and boot cover....
It has a huge shopping basket at the bottom.
And also has the baby head protection thing on it (don't know the proper name for it), which you remove for toddlers.
It does not fold too small, but I have a huge boot.
I have decided to buy that....$299 on special.
Do you want a 4 wheeler? I don't like them as they are not very flexible.

Hi,
Naomi, when you say the MacLaren, do you mean the real fancy one? (can't remember the model name/number), I saw one yesterday in BabyStar in Wellington. I did really want to get it, but we decided on the PhilandTeds E3 Version 2 as it has a toddler attachement, capsule attachment and they were giving the euro highchair away for free with it. Is rather spendy though! Although the MacLaren is $699.00 (youch!) but a very good buggy, it folds up smaller than the mountain buggy and E3. Where are you situated Naomi?

There is a Baby Factory in Newmarket which is close for me to walk not having bought a motorised shpping trolley yet!! Hi Janine,
Yeah I know you can get the buggy cheaper on Winkalotts, but they didn't have the highchair for free with it, so it ends up being WAY cheaper the way we did it as the chair is worth $279.00. Its like the Picopico highchair which is on Winkalotts. I will get more accessories later on though through winkalotts, I got all my breast pump/steriliser etc through them and saved myself mega bucks, its great. And the free postage just makes it all that much better....:-) But yeah the lack of 3D virtual testing is a bit of a bummer....LOL

We have a steelcraft 3-wheeler from babycity. I think it's called 'Urban' and I love it. So easy to steer with the front swivel wheel and easy to collapse.
It came with the newborn head support thingy, wind-break cover and boot cover. From memory, I think it was about $350. The next model up was about $420?? and you can attach the toddler seat to it.
Looking back now, we should've got that one as we're going to try for #2 soon, but was outta the price range at the time.

We bought a new MacLaren 3 wheeler (Mac3). It didn't look as sporty as the mountain buggy one What I love is that we have the carry cot addition for the first months and then can make it into a stroller when baby is bigger. It was lighter than the mountain buggy and is easy to manouver as it has a swivel wheel at the front that you can also hold in place. Folds up quite well too. Only thing is the price, but thank goodness for first time grandma's - it was her present to us!!

nmaraea it's not too bad when collapsed, but we have a toyota hilux so no probs with space!
I tried to get it into my friends boot (corolla sedan) but it wouldn't fit unless I took the front wheel off. If you have a hatchback, it shouldn't be a prob.
We had bought a 4-wheeler to start as I preferred them over the 3-wheel but it only had plastic wheels and wasn't too good to push on the gravel etc...I would definately recommend 3-wheelers unless you have the $$$ to get the Bertini 4-wheelers that have rubber tyres as well. Although I found them too heavy and hard to manuvere (sp?).
