I am the Auntie to Paige (10) and Emily (5). They both have birthdays coming up and I am out of touch as to what girls actually like.
What are little girls into, and older ones for that matter.

hhhm i know what my girls like and i think its pretty standard right thru at the mo. 5 yr olds.. something like barbie, bratz, polly pocket.. littlest pet shop has new teeny tiny playsets out at the mo (dammit, $16 at the warehouse righ tnow and palmy has sold out in 1 day gggrrr, paris has only been on at me for months about them) my little pony has little playsets that have just come out too. but yeah, bratz is pretty styly.. very skanky though lol
for the 10 yr old, i'd say bratz, or something different - they kinda get out of the playing for ages with barbies at that age.. how bout those Bindeez? Kmart and spotlight have them, they are pretty styly and gives her something to do too.
Maybe some nail polish, her own bubble bath and some bigger girly stuff.. although depends on how responsible she is.. one of my 10 yr old neices is fine with that stuff, the other one her mum usually finds it hidden in her school bag or spilt on the duvet cover..

I wasn't sure if Bratz was still popular. I will have to check out the littlest petshop and my little pony. Scary i used to like my little pony, i'm sure that stuff is targetted at mums as well as daughters.
My older niece is 10 going on 21 she thinks she little miss teenager, not the young girl she actually is.

ha ha, in that case maybe some nail polish and girly stuff then. Hey maybe a kewl top from the older girls pumpkin patch store.. can't remember the name of it - urban angel i think it's called.. and a funky little handbag..

Just watch out with Bratz as some parents are anti them...I don't blame them, I can't stand Bratz myself!
Maybe Barbie would be a better bet as pretty classic toy and is minus the skank facto rof Bratz.

mm i find them a bit too skanky, that and in their game boy game they bought out.. all the "good girls" were the pretty ones.. all the "baddies" were the overweight not-so-pretty ones.. what kind of message does that give girls. lol

How about something like littlest pet shop or my little pony sets.
I can't stand Bratz either....far too skanky for my tastes as Peanut says many parents are anti them. If you were after something like that Barbie would be a better option.

I would look at something other than dolls for the 10 year old. Sorry, my brain isn't working for other suggestions, but will try and ask some kids at school next week for ideas for you.
(I'm another anti bratz person too!)

i cant stand bratz either! who in there right mind developed that concept to give to little girls???? i sometimes think that toy companies are so out of touch with what parents want for their kids. i dont care how much the girls would nag me, if i didnt want them to have something then i wouldnt buy it for them.
we much prefer barbie in this house, as barbie is a "princess" and seeing as miss x wants to be one of those when she grows up......
for the older girl i think the idea of pretty things is a good one. or maybe some funky bath products - bubble bath, lotion etc. you can get some cool things at pharmacys now, that arent just aimed at little girls.
for the younger girl i would think barbie, or my little pony would be good. or what about the happy feet dvd? its really kewl

For a tenth birthday CD's are always good or clothes. Girls are so into fasion these days. My 11yr old has only wanted these the past few years now. Accessories like handbags sunnies are great too. For a 5yr old girl, they also love the accessory type stuff as well as little girly diaries and fancy pens to write in them, handbags etc... Gosh just dont get me started LOL

Can you pop an email to their mum? Some girls are into barbies, some are into baby dolls..... I was also going to mention handbags but Janine bet me to it . What about a bead threading set to make jewellery?

We are Bratz fans in this house; Nyah (4) plays with them more than her Barbie. She's also got Trollz which she likes.
10year old option is jewellery and/or books or a Westfield voucher or even Glassons/Supre.... My son loves getting vouchers, would prefer them over actual presents.

If I was 10 I would probably really love some accessories. They have great stuff at shops like Equip, Diva and Bling. Heaps of reasonably priced funky bracelets, bags, lip glosses and they have awesome sales for jewellery, often $2-3 for a pair of earrings or a nice necklace.
Not a fan of Bratz either. Those dolls look horrible and their heads are so huge!

Ok, did talk to a couple of 10 year solds - they are into scrapbooking, so they would like some cool scrapbooking stuff. Would check with the mum about that, but if they are into it, it is a cool gift - you can get decent packs for kids anywhere including the Warehouse. Will check in with more next week.

Thanks ladies, lots of great suggestions.
I love the scrapbooking idea miss, and my SIL would appreciate something creative rather than make up or jewelry. I will look at the Littlest Pet Shop for miss 5 a girls diary would be nice.
Looks like a trip to Kmart and the Warehouse is called for.
