Hi,
Im just thinking ahead to after I have the baby and would love to know what sort of jobs SAHMs do for extra money. I would ideally like to have something lined up as I am currently a student and wont be able to save for when the baby comes. I will have a Marketing degree so hopefully that will help me find something suitable. We are struggling now on one income and will continue to struggle if I dont find some work that I can do at home when the bubba is born. What does everone else do and if you dont mind it would be nice to know what sort of money you can get for particular jobs? A lot of mums on here are MCN (modern cloth nappy) agents. What about looking into PORSE or some other system where you look after another child in your home (instead of that child going to daycare)? -------------  |

Ooo I'm definitely going to be watching this thread.
I would love to know what kind of jobs we can do as SAHMs. I have racked my brains but I can never think of anything that I would be able to do. I've done a years Early Childhood Studies, so could do something along those lines, maybe home-based childcare for one other child during the week.  Good topic idea!

I've just become a Tweedle (modern cloth nappy) agent.
But I know of a couple of people who put their sewing skills to use and have started selling their products on trade me etc for some extra money. |

I'm going to be a studying SAHM. I'm going back to uni next semester to finally finish my degree. You could do post grad study. If you have a child you get an allowance no matter what your age is or partners income. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

Market Research by telephone for companies like National resarch Bureau and Colmar Brunton
I get $13 an hour as a senior telephone interviewer . You phone in the evenings or during the day in the weekends and if Hubby is home in the weekends there is the option of doing door to door interviewing |

Hey Topsy,
With a marketing degree, why don't you look into doing some marketin/design work for small businesses around the place? the other thought I had is that I might look into doing some courses in webdesign - something you can do on a computer is always good from home! ------------- Mum to two beautiful kids

That is a really good one though you would want to do your research and make sure you're not copying other people's designs or if you are using another design make sure you are licensed. I'm a Honeychild agent which I really enjoy. Once you have been using Fuzzi's as your main nappy system for a while then it's something you can apply for.  ------------- http://lilypie.com">

ok i didnt want to put my kids in childcare i wanted to stay at home with them so i looked in the phone book and found homebased childcare services and i singed up. i get to stay at home and look afther my kids and watch a couple more. you are allowed 4 kids at one time (including your own ) and only 2 under 2years at one time. i get paid $4 per hour per child you can choose weather to take on a child or not especally if thay have crazey hours.at the monent i work 4 days a week 2 of them i only work 9 till 1 and the other to i work 9 till 5 and fridays is the only day i have 4 at one time and two of them go home at 1. i have been doing this for 3 years now and find it is great for a bit of extra money and you have to enteract with the kids so you are spending quality time with your own kids as well. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I'm lucky that my 'real job' is something I can fit in around my family. I started off as a freelancer working from home when Maya was smaller and I still do a wee bit of freelance stuff, but mostly I work here at OHbaby!
I love my job, it's relevant to where I am in my life at the moment with young kids, it means I can work when the kids are asleep etc. and it's given me the opportunity to meet so many other mums with babies/kids similar ages to mine. Not to mention all the research I do gives me a head start on how to deal with the kids, and the perks like freebies and lots of books to review. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Sorry Becks but I don't think you're right about your partners income having no impact on a student allowance. A friend of mine looked into it, and while the threshold may have been a bit higher, her DF's income still counted.
Also, it depends how much study you are doing as to your entitlement for WFF subsidies/tax credits. If you go on to the online calculator, it says for some aspects that if you're a student, you're not entitled. I assume that's probably full time student I guess. A lot of contradicting stuff out there though

OK I was told that by a person at SL so long as you are studying fulltime (to SL by EFT's) and you have "dependants" you should be able to get an allowance It was only $70 I was getting on the allowance but still $70 is better than nothing. Also the budget that came out yesterday had some more stuff in it about helping people to get allowances. I'm not getting it next semester as I don't want it to impact on our family assistance (or whatever they call it now) payments as we get quite a bit from them but it's something I might look at getting next year. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

What about looking at ESOl tutoring - this starts younger and is pretty good money. Not sure exactly how to get into it, but a friend tutors 2 Korean kiddies from her old school - maybe advertise in the school newsletter? -------------

i hate student loans all my recent dealings with them have been bad bad bad. however a student allowance doesnt affect your working for families stuff, its only your earnings ( from work 20hrs if your a solo parent or 30hrs between you if your a coupple) found that out the other day when we got told were not entitled to anything from working for families grrr so im definatly keen for the working from home thing. ------------- http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow"> DD 10.5yrs DS 6yrs DS 11mths 5 little angles watching from above |
