Am deciding what to do and need some help. I am def birthing at chch women's but was thinking about transfering to St G's.
What have the rest of you chch mums done? What is your advice? -------------

To be honest I was going to do the same, but I had High BP in the end and on medication. I was told that I would have to stay at ChCh Womens as their are no Doctors who could administer my med's, even though I could do this myself. Also, you may have bubs at 2am, then being transfered during the night, it is cold..... To be honest just stay in one place, you should be able to go home after two or three days. I birthed at Christchurch Womens then transfered to St Georges I would recommend getting transferred to St Georges because there are more nurses to mums you have private rooms and the food is way better. The nurses and midwifes at St Georges were absolutely wonderful I am definitely to the same next time round.

I had my first at Chch womens and my second at st Georges, my third was born at chch womens due to a C- section. Out of the two I highly recommend St Georges, the atmosphere was wonderful and they were so nice and helpful there. They seemed a little less rushed and I received more attention as well. I was so disappointed that they couldn't fit me in for my third.

Yeah im sure you have to transfer within 2 hours, as my friend was planning exactly that, to birth at chch womans and transfer to st georges.
She had her baby at chch womans as planned but there was no room for her at st georges and she ended up going home 3 hours after the birth. (First baby) and that was 29th march. ------------- ~ Mummy to a beautiful girl ~ |

I have talked to my MW about it anyway but wanted some people's personal experience!
You have to transfer within 12 hours to St G's but usually they transfer you within 3 hours and no you don't have to transfer from chch women's, you can stay there for the 3days if you like. Keep the thoughts coming please. -------------

That may be so Peanut, but I know they are so short of beds at CWH that if theres no reason for you to be in hospital (bar needing rest ) they will either send you home or transfer you. All the beds are getting taken up with complicated births (which are becoming more and more) and because St G's lost the contract to do c-secs, now CWH do ALL C-secs (even electives) which means all the beds get taken up by those women (who are guaranteed a 5 day stay). My advice would be to definitely have somewhere to transfer to as opposed to getting sent home and I have heard (my sis had all 3 babes at St G's) that St G's are excellent for post natal care, in terms of advice, education, breastfeeding support and the rest (plus its all been done up now too). I just wrote a bunch of this stuff in the August thread if you want to look at that too. I used to work at CWH so I no what the dire situation is like!! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Am thinking that if St G's is all booked and I can't get a bed, then I will transfer home rather than to burwood or lincoln as too far from my family and would make me rather isolated. I am lucky as my MIL is a midwife etc so would be fine to transfer home but 1st choice would be St G's.
I have filled in all the paper work etc for St G's etc but was just wondering what others thought. -------------

I had a natural water birth at Burwood then was transfered in a hurry in an ambulance to Womans, was there for about 3 days, was going to go back to Burwood but said that I could go home.
This time around, I am booked into Womans then hopefully I will be transfered to Burwood, it may be older, but hardly anyone goes there and it is nice and quiet! ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I had to fill in a form for St G's and one for ChCh womens. Was given them on my first visit to midwife. I am guessing everyone has to do it eventually, maybe its because you haven't decided what your doing yet? (i think thats what you said in the above posts). -------------

I had both girls at CWH - Ashlyn at the old CWH & was going to transfer to Lincoln but the timing wasnt good so ended up staying where I was, they were all very nice there but very busy. Anastasia - I had to birth at CWH as I was trying for VBAC & ended having another c-section, timing of birth was better so we transfered & it was fantastic at Lincoln, yes its a bit older but the nurses were fantastic and they had time to spend with me, I had trouble breast feeding 1st time round & I got all the help I needed and the food was fantastic!! Im surprised that by 28 weeks you havent had to do the paperwork nzpiper. I know i did with both babies and it was some time in the second trimester.
I agree, even though they say you can stay at CWH I dont think they will let you because of the bed issue. I know I was never given the option of staying there but for medical reasons did. I have never heard of anyone being able to stay there longer as an option, they just dont have the room. My friend went to burwood and loved it but most people I know go to St Georges. I had one friend who went home same day but ended up back in hospital because of blood lose. |
