Cleaning their teeth and a few more questions

James got his first tooth last week it's about 3mm above his gum so do I start cleaning it now and is just a cloth alright to start with by itself or should I get him some toothpaste too.

Also when would I start using a toothbrush?

Thanks ladies not quite sure what to do being first time mum and I have a feeling he is not going to like getting his teeth brushed.

they say not to use toothpaste until they are a year old,

at first i just gave rhiannon a soft toothbrush to chew on while in the bath to get her use to it, and now i can acutally brush her teeth and then she will do it.

oh and a cloth is a good start

We got a dentist appointment when Tyrell was about 8 months old....Weird aye.

I rang to say Tyrell was only 8 months with only a couple of teeth. They said it is quite "normal" in AKL. She went on to talk about the care of his teeth. She said use a soft cloth like muslin or the likes then proceed to a tooth brush. She advised the best time is at night for such a young age.
I said we were already doing it with a brush in the morning. (No worries)

She said to use toothpaste every other day if not every 3rd day. But this is when he had a few teeth and it is the baby paste from the supermarket.

We have no probs brushing his teeth unless he is teething and his mouth hurts. he tends to watch us a lot when we brush our teeth....he thinks it is fun

we didn't get a dentist appointment, but then Caitlin has only just got her first 2 teeth (at the same time poor darling )

She chews on a face cloth in the bath anyways and has a little toothbrush that has a light on it that she likes to chew so I guess we were inadventantly (sp?) doing it right

I've been using a baby toothbrush on Ella's teeth from when they arrived - she loves it!  Ain't no way I was trying the cloth thing and getting my fingers chomped up - she's got a really good bite on her!  No toothpaste yet, but I'll start using the baby stuff in a month or two if it passes the allergy check.

Hehe Jaxon has 7 teeth and 2 more coming through and my plunket nurse says to use a cloth and if I can a toothbrush with babies toothpaste on it. She did say somethgn about the babies toothpaste not having enough fluroide in it so to use a tiny tiny bit of adult but Ive just stuck to the babies, hehe.

Also Jaxon hates the toothbrush but could be because he is teething and he just chews the bristles really  hard. You can hear them grinding.

And yeh when I try to wipe with a cloth he just bites. Ouch!!!!

I do worry he is not getting his teeth cleaned correctly.

So when you say use a cloth do you mean wipe the teeth with it or just let them chew on it .... I dont think I'd have much luck trying to wipe them lol

I can't even remember when I started using a toothbrush with Maya, but I do remember it was one of those funky baby ones with the animal caps. She teethed early and quickly so I guess she was somewhere around 9 months? The gremlins are still my lil gummy bears so no tooth brushing for them yet

I have been thinking about this too. DD just got her first tooth and I wondered whether we should be brushing it or something. Not sure how she would go with a toothbrush yet but will try the cloth idea.
She bites everything at the moment!

Whoops, maybe I have been a bit lazy on this front - we are up to 7 teeth with number 8 suspected to be on it's way, but no toothbrush in sight. Suppose I can always chuck a kiddy toothbrush in with the groceries this weekend !

Hey Danielle I started letting Jack play with a toothbrush in the bath as soon as he got his first tooth. When you do start using toothpaste make sure you use the adults toothpast not th kids cos our water doesn't have fluroride in it

Cool thanks for that Rachael I was wondering if we had fluoride in our water since it's so fresh.

Thanks for the rest of your advice ladies

With my daughter we went stright to a toothbrush and she has kiddies toothpaste as well.

She loves brushing her teeth and you can usually find her in the bathroom trying to reach her toothbrush pointing and saying teeeeeeeefs very cute.

as soon as haleigh got ehr first tooth i gently rubbed it witha cloth but she was very oyung and wouldnt have been able to hold a toothbrush to chew on or anything. but once she could at a bout 5months i gave ehr the tooth brush.
when she got to 10 or 11months i gave her a little toothpaste, the milk teeth one, she now has colgate kids toothpaste.
haleigh enjoys her brushing teeth time no and can brush all her teeth with little to no help now
