Who in your house made the decision on what nappies you were going to use/buy in your house.
Both of us In our place we talked together on the pros and cons of all naps and then went to the P&C expo and looked at all the cloth. Because we were going to spend so much money we talked and looked at everything. And in the end we went for cloth. ------------- Look out! It's a man. SAHD

I mostly did. DH told me from the beginning that he won't have an opinion and it should be my choice since I will be doing the bulk of the nappy changing. But when I decided what I thought we should go with I showed him and told him why etc. He's happy with my choice to go with MCN's

We happily went with disposibles, until I realised MCN were out there and also how much we were spending on disposibles all up with 2 children in nappies. Once I showed Nat the alternatives, we decided together to get a hirekit, then he made the final decision to go cloth. ------------- Becca, mum of 2 girls & 3 boys |

I wanted to do cloth. Not a big thing in SA but have a forum buddy that has her own company. I am ooming and aahing about going cloth for the next one but will then buy hers as I found them to be a lot cuter and more economical as well.
Hubby didnt wanted to go cloth and in the end we went with disposables. In SA I only used Pampers. Quite sad they dont have it here. With next one we will see. I am ooming and aahing but I guess we will do disposables again although I am tempted to do EC with the next child so we will see. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

We went with disposables in the beginning, as we were having enough trouble keeping on top of the washing we already had and after I got on my feet with that, Hubby encouraged me to go cloth.
We only knew about flats and pins though, and it didn't really last long as Ella was a heavy wetter and each change required new clothes too. Once I found out about the MCNS through this site there was no looking back! We both agreed to go for MCN's while I was pregnant, then I chose the brand and amount we'd need, and it was my decision to use disposables for Ella in the first 4 weeks or so. Hubby also thought cloth flats were the way to go (when he found out how little they cost) but I said no way. ...then, we both felt we'd prefer to stick with the 'sposies after using them for a bit, but still were both considering MCN's for the future. I tried some MCN's on Ella and wasn't happy with the fit, and when hubby put his foot down about us never owning a clothes dryer, I said screw the idea of cloth naps if we can't have a dryer as a back-stop over winter - we're sticking with disposables! ------------- Andie |

It's not so much about the type or why you choose the nappies that I want to know, allthough interesting.

We're going to be using cloth with our baby.
It was definately input from both of us, though I did the market research first and then told DH all about it, showed him pictures etc. From memory he was keen from the beginning. As with all matters to do with Caitlin it was totally a joint decision and have found the same to be true when selling the nappies (decision made by both Mum & Dad) at the demos both are equally as interested.

I was introduced to FB, DH wasn't there, I did the figures and ran it by him. Whenever we spend over $50 we always run it by the other person first so that's what I did. DH didn't have much of an opinion at the time, except that he didn't want to deal with pins. -------------  |

Mine had none. He has no interest in what the kids are wearing, unless it's black and white striped babylegs with an I love anarchy T-shirt and a black berry plush nappy. Besides, he does what he's told

With Andrew we used Huggies and nothing else till he was about 9 months old. That decision was mine as it was info I had gotten from other people who had babies. With Josh I had brought disposibles through out my pregnancy as we were going to do them again (both our decision) but once he got here and I saw how easy MCN's were I changed things for us. We are currently using up the disposibles and i'm probably going to but the rest on TradeMe and by then we'll have our MCN's. Plus my mum can make them so it's a lot cheaper for us. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

Well, we have disposables in there for when bubs arrives. We talked about MCN, but decided against them for a few reasons (no washing line, no drier, no interest, only having one child). Very much a discussion and joint decision. -------------

First, I am not having a go at anyone. I just wanted to see how true this bit in the "June Update" is, I got in my email box. All over New Zealand, mums are asking themselves the same question: "What's the best nappy for my needs?" Most mums decide which nappy to use based on trial-and-error and recommendations from friends. I agree with your comment that some articles would be better if the word "parent" was used rather than "Mum" and I know this matter has been raised in the past, but who is your argument with? the forum members or the website writers? Was it really worth STIRRING everyone up AGAIN?

No where have I said anything against this site or anyone on it or the people or person that wrote that piece. This is constructive because it has come out that the dads in this world are having alot more input into there families than maybe in the past where mums, were it, in deciding what was going to happen with the kids. ------------- Look out! so rug_nz all this is an issue over a word then? You have taken offence to the oh baby newsletter saying "mums" as opposed to "parents" and decided to use us and our decision making methods to get at oh baby. If you dont like the word mums why dont you just substitute in in your mind...like i would if i see girl instead of boy in a general article on babies.
May i suggest also that if you are unhappy with oh baby or its choice of a word, that you stick with the coffee group forum where you have more input, instead of trying to stir with the mostly women membership of this board. just my opinion of course...but you dont seem to ever post anyting constructive.

I'd actually go so far as to say the opposite - the idea that women have anything valuable to contribute to the family other than childbearing and housekeeping duties is a relatively recent thing - even as recently as 100 years ago men made all the decisions for the family - what school the children attended, what career paths they followed etc. It's really only since the 1960's that women have started to have a voice in things that concern them and their children, and I think it's interesting that now we are observing a complete role reversal whereby it IS the women who are the decision makers. I get your point Rug_nz, that a lot of parenting information is marketed at women/mums specifically rather than parents as a whole, but from a marketing perspective that's simply addressing the target marget. Whilst I commend what you do as a SAHD, you are in the minority and marketing is all about reaching the maximum potential relevant audience, which in this case is primarily female. Just my two cents worth, I'm going to take my media/marketing degree and crawl back into my cave now, I'm one of that odd species of female that tries to have a job AND a family ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)
