ok abit of a rant really....

DH and i bought our house a few months ago and it has no heating. we've been renting the place since jack was born and been using a gas heater, which isn't the best as both jack and i have asthma. so, we decided we'd get a heatpump installed which is going to cost around $3000 and even then we'll still have to run a heater in the kid's rooms because the heatpump won't heat the whole house.

then we thought we could get a cleanheat approved woodburner instead which would heat the whole house and would save on power each month. so we went and had a look around the shops and we could get one for $1400 plus installation flue etc........then the lady said we'd have to get a council permit and a building permit costing approx $1000!!!!!!!!

why bother bringing out cleanheat approved fires if you can't install the blimmin things anyway! i'm so angry at the council! yes i understand that smog is getting worse etc but if other people can have a nice warm house why can't i?   it's so cold here now that i'm going to have to turn on the gas heater..which will mean i'm gasping on my inhaler within the hour and jack probably will be too

ranty rant rant rant!!

do you have a dehum?
we run ours all the time along with the fire, and when we had only gas heating with the gas heater and it helped with the moisture in the hosue.
i thought htat the new pellet fires were supose to be not that bad, so i can see why your annoyed.
my nana and grandad live in chch and they have a nightstal in thee hallway and a heater in the lounge, but ive never known their hosue to get cold well their one in brighton didnt not sure about their new one in parklands.

hope you can find something suitable to heat your hosue

Wow that is very pricey... but still cheaper. So a fire wouldn't affect your athsma badly? I'd go for it but I'd probably let the Council know about the athsma problem while you're doing paperwork.

I know that the council has subsidies for people changing their fires that aren't clean air approved to ones that are. If you did go the heat pump way The council has subsidies for that as well and you pay it though your rates my partner just explained it to me that they pay for it and then you pay them back though your rates and think they must get cheaper deals.

So maybe give them a call and ask about the subsidies Vanessa I know that we have to replace our fire in three years time cos it's not clean air approved and the land agent told us about the subsidies then.

I hope this makes sense.

danni that subsidy is only for people replacing their existing fire. the thing that sucks the most is we relocated this house but before we could do that, the council made us TAKE THE FIRE OUT!

we'll probably get a heat pump installed and be done with it. even if we could get a fire, the council has to accept your permit application and then you have to get a building consent. then on top of purchasing the fire and paying for paperwork, we'd have to pay up to $1000 to get it installed.

we've got community energy action coming on monday to assess the house for insulation. if we get it, they will pay 75% of the cost for roof, underfloor and hot cylinder wraps!!!   i hope they do because we have no insulation either so that alone should make the house warmer.

wow that sucks. when we get our next house we are definately going for a heatpump. at the house we built we put one of those warehouse ones in, you can get higher wattage for less money and I think all up including installation it was about $1500 and man does it work well, there are no curtains or anything to keep the heat in but it heats the whole house in bugger all time. Not sure how the warehouse ones compare with the likes of fujitsu in terms of running cost though.
