Just saw an article on the news tonight about foodtown and plastic bags...they have decided that if you buy under three products then they wont give you a bag..YAY!
foodtown were one of the main culprits tho i think and even tho they sell enviro bags they still packed your purchases into too many plastic bags.
i have heaps of enviro bags i use now and never get plastic bags at the dairy now either...
I think we should all make an effort to say no to plastic bags... it certainly makes for less mess around my house, let alone the landfill.

If I have Erin in the stroller and I am at the supermarket / red shed, I will always say no to a plastic bag for small items, and just pop them in the parcel tray. Or if I have my hands free (ie: no Erin) I will still say no and just carry it, I agree - the less plastic bags the better. We do have cloth ones too for when we go to Pak N Save and do our big food shop.

Countdown have signs that ask people to request no bag for less than 3 items. I never buy less than three tho...

i noticed bunnings now charge you for bags, we dont get bags for small items anyway.
i cant see why they give bags for a small amount when with a pram i can use the parcel tray lol.
it is good they are trying to stop the amount of bags used. countdown is shocking with the amount they use they will put 1 thing in a bag on its own, we end up with a huge drawer full of bags at end of grocery day, we should prob remember to take our bags in with us next time we go in we ahve more than enough.

New world annoys me when we go there because of the amount of bags they pack stuff in. Some bags will only have one or two items and we end up with twice as many bags as what was actually needed.

I don't have a problem with saying no to bags, just wish it would make the cost of groceries cheaper. I prefer Pak n Save and Write Price I can bring my own, or pay for them if i need them.
Woolies wont take 10c off my bill for not taking a bag.

I think it is a good idea, but what I find is like yeaterday I went in and got 3 2.5 bottle of coke and a big packet of Huggies wipes and the chicky but the 3 bottles in one bag. I picked it up and it broke. I am finding they are over packing the very thin bags. I'm all for the reuse, recycle and (I can't remember the other one), I use the plastic bags to put our recycling out but if it breaks on me how can I reuse it? I have to bin it. I have just started buying the reusable bags (you can fit so much in them) but yesterday Countdown didn't have any (all sold out which in a way is kinda cool).

We also re-use all of our plastic bags as our kitchen rubbish bags because we are too cheap to buy proper bin liners.

They did this in SA. You had to start buying bags and then they had some recycle bags. (I bought quite a few of those) But kept forgetting to take them with me. I now use the plastic bags as bin liners as well and tell them not to put the bottles in bags as they just rip anyway.

I get my groceries delievered and the amount of bags they use is SHOCKING!!!!
I've emailed them suggesting using the re-usable bags, and each time you have a delivery you could just return last weeks bags etc but didnt' get much of a response.
We do re-use our bags to pick up doggi doos, but I still would like less.

Which supermarket has the best reusable bags? I like them but not too sure where I should get them from. Are they pretty much the same?

I've only got one reusable bag at the moment... we use it when we're only getting a few things from the supermarket here. When we do our monthly shop we usually go to Pac N Save, so we've got boxes to pack our groceries into in the car... we reuse old shopping bags for any left over stuff.
I've given a whole heap of plastic bags to the local kindy when they wanted some, and then more to the high school so we've got very few left here.

Leish I have the ones from Woollies and Countdown and they seem really good. But they have only been used twice so someone else probably have better opinions.

I got a re-usable bag from New World it folds up small, i also got a plastic box from Pak n Save, Shop in Go which fits all our weekly groceries, and its already packed by the time i get to the checkout. I use their free green one for fruit and vege and thats all we use.
I reuse plastic bags for rubbish bags, but usually end up with more bags than rubbish.

I have the blue cooler bags from countdown and a few of the green bags but like some of the others I always forget to take them. our countdown pack heaps into there bags which usually results in them breaking of splitting.
We also use our bags as bin liners. If these places really want to commit to recycling why not go back to paper bags they have heaps of uses!

i have some hemp bags that i got from a TNN co-op and they are huge...i also use the cotton bag we got with the johnsons product freebies for my meat and just throw it in the wash after i use it.
i always forget them when i do the grocery shop tho so just throw the groceries in the boot and use my bags or boxes when i unpack at the other end.
