Hiya,

Just wondering if anyone else has had a problem with their boys bottom being like kinda split between anus and scrotum??? It looks like its really sore and sometimes can bleed a little. Jaxon has had this a few times now but tonight it looks really sore and he screamed when I put nappy rash cream on it. How would I prevent this? What causes it and how can I treat it???

Not sure what causes it, but when my boys bum gets really bad I use Weleda rash cream, it is fantastic...

I was just going to ask that, gandt -- Emma Rose had a naaaaaaasty case of thrush last week (she's just now recovering from it, thank goodness) and it got sore enough to bleed, which is what made me wonder when I read kellverona's post. Kell, how red is it? And when you say "split", do you mean it looks like there's a cut there? Is it really swollen? Is the edge of the rash clearly defined?

oh oh oh...a bum question I know the answer to...wahooo....

it's called an anal fissure (A a small tear or cut in the skin lining the anus which can cause pain and/or bleeding.). It's usually caused by hard poo, though somewhat ironically runny poo can cause it too (don't ask me why). The main things to do are make sure he has lots of fluid and isn't blocked up. Regular baths with a little bit of tea tree oil are great to soak in - just make sure that none of the oiled up water gets into his eyes. Sudocrem is also great for healing them up. They can take up to a week to heal. (Anal fissures in infants usually self-heal without anything more than frequently changing diapers and treating constipation if the cause.)

Okay, so I'm guessing that my intrigue levels have increased due to being able to answer this one...

Some of the products that heal rashes and spilts like that can also really sting when you apply them.  If you've got any pure lanolin left over from the early days, you could put some of that on instead - it encourages 'moist wound healing'.  Oh - and regular bare-bum time after a nappy change and before you put any creams on.

Good luck - hope it clears up for him soon.
