Okay so this is prob a dumb question - but what sort of linen do I need to buy for the baby? We are intending on using a basinett for the first couple of months, and I also have a moses basket. Baby is due in Oct, so not sure whether to buy flanelette (sp) or just cotton... Help - I dont know how many blankets, sheets etc I will need and am getting confused?!?!

We just used cotton for the gremlins who were also born in Oct, I have two sets of sheets (fitted + flat) and one cot quilt and one mink blanket for each baby which I alternate with washing. If it got chillier I'd add a polar fleece blanket as well, I have two of those for each girl.
We've just recently started using flannelette now that it's a lot colder, but I'd say cotton is fine for an Oct newborn as you don't want to overheat bubs, especially if you're wrapping him/her. No help with bassinettes tho sorry coz I've never used one. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

It is best to have both lots - just incase we have crappy weather. I have two lots of flanelette and about 4 of the cotton. We also have about 4 blankets on top. Also a mattress protector. One thing to consider is that you may get lots of blankets as gifts, so don't over do it. Sheets can also double as wraps if you are short of them. Over summer you will want a cotton sheet on top of baby - and perhaps that will be all during the day (if that). So go with cotton for now. You'll only need two sets but three would be ideal. And don't bother buying things for the bassinette, a lot of babies don't even last 2 months in a bassinette so you can just use the cot sheets for that. ------------- |

we jsut used coton sheets, and a woollen blanket as our house got hot, but once summer kicked in haleigh would sleep with only a sheet and hated being wrapped.

We used cot sheets to wrap the gremlins when they got bigger, especially Sienna who used to fight like crazy to get out but wouldn't sleep unwrapped.
Mum cut some single sheets in half and hemmed them to make sheets for the cots at their place. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

i wouldnt use quilts or mink blankets for babies.. too heavy blah blah...
i think we used flannette sheets for gabriel (and he was born in nov) but only on the bottom and he was wrapped (in a flat nappy or thin blanket) and then we had the aircell blanket on him. Just checked his baby photos and yep that is how it was..in a pic from dec tho in his bassinett he had cotton sheets on...and it was a cot sheet just folded to be smaller. i think i brought one bassinette sheet set and the rest were cot size. ------------- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker">

we used a basinette - had two fitted sheets, never used the flat sheet that came with the set. Best blankets we used were the minky feel ones you buy (rolled up with ribbon edging)at baby city that are plush kinda and are $8 each - we bought two and they were perfect for basinette cross ways. Too small for cot but perfect now it is colder for her in the pod in the car etc.
now she is in cot she is under fleece blanket and on cotton sheet. |

basinettes.. reality is the sheets are gonna be used for not a very long time and there are so many different varieties of them and sizes that you just can't win. Go to spotlight, buy some flanelette for about $7 a metre for the long stuff and just hem the edges.. am sure you know someone wiht a sewing machine that can sew ina straight line, doesn't take much. cheap as, cute and if you get about 1.2 metres of it then it doubles as cot sheets too depending on size of cot.
For my girls, i always had flanelette as they were both winter babies but i found i didn't have the summer sheets on long when it was hot. i still used flanelette underneath for a bit of heat and just adjusted the layers on them instead. i have about 3 sets of bought cot cheets, plus a couple of sets of home made ones, which are neat as i got ones to go with the quilt tops i made. i got a cot quilt given to me and i bought the neat quilt cover panels from - you guessed it, spotlight lol (i worked there during my first preg.. lots of tempting stuff!!) and made covers for it. WE are a little more traditional in that we had nanas that knitted or chocheted kewl cot sized blankets for both our girls, so we have a fair few of those that we can layer on for warmth if need be. Ayja currently has a couple of those on her bed as well as cot quilt and a cute plush soft blanky we got to go over on cold nights. wraps, also easy, just that stretch knit stuff thats flimsy.. also cheap to buy at spotlight, or those thin cotton wraps are good as they breathe well. Polar fleece traps heat well, but doesn't breath, meaning ultimately heat gets trasnferred back to baby and it can overheat, as well as making them sweat, which also gets trapped as moisture and can make them freeze. he he you can't win. polar fleece is great for cuddlies etc but not good for sleeping in unless you get a kids that never is under their blankets at night. argh, you are right, it's all terribly confusing but you know what, you'll find what you want to use, and go with that. we just give lots of different ideas and opinions.. take the advice you like and need, and see what you end up with.  ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja

We have gone for only natural fibres because of the reasons mum2paris says. if you are after a decent priced woolen blanket, babycity has them for $40 (down from 60) at the moment. We just bought a second one today to have a spare.
Most if not all the blankeets I have been given are lovely but not natral fibers - they will be fab for us to use on the floor, but we personally will not use them in bed. -------------

yep, go the natural fibers for bedding! I used a bassinette for Ella at first, and would thoroughly recommend just making wee sheets for it - buy the fabric or sometimes it's cheaper to buy a cheap cotton sheet and carve it up. Because they're so small, bassinettes are really easy to make without fitted sheets so I found there wasn't any need to go to the hassle of making those. And Ella's cot blankets just worked in her bassinette, folded over of course. She was an october bub too. By the time summer was in full force, she was in a cot anyways. ------------- Andie |

You could always use flat cot sheets in your bassinette - just fold them over to the right size (and because they're bigger the one on the bottom won't come undone of mattress).
We use two cotton cot blankets in the bassinette doubled over (so four layers). We have a woollen aircell blanket but haven't used it yet. |

I forgot to mention that while I have my babies wrapped I don't bother with a top sheet as well... so Krystiana's still only using one sheet at a time (just 'weaning' her off the blanket wrapping now). ------------- |

| Pillowcases work great as bassinette fitted sheets. In our cot we have a brushed cotton underblanket, cotton sheets and then a woolen blanket, a polarfleece blanket and a quilt. We wrap Caleb as well and he always seems to be nice and toasty. |

I used pillow cases for both kids when they were in the bassinet too... cheap as chips option.. you can get pillow cases for real cheap at all stores these days...

The other thing that works well for bassinette sheets is the flat nappies. Great to have them even if you are using sposies they are great for spills or putting under your baby on the floor. We have one set of bassinette sheets and then either use a pillowcase or a nappy when it gets washed. ------------- http://lilypie.com">
