As we are soon approching the solids stage, I have been reading up on the topic. What do you think of this article? Has anyone tried something similar?

Gosh you were up late last night. Must be feeling a bit  today.
No - I hadn't heard of that form of introduction to solids but it was a very interesting article. Noah has already started having some solids and we have been doing the traditional feeding him with a spoon thing and he has been handling it very well. I haven't heard of it before either. Krystiana loves her food - she eats the equivalent of 2x tins per day. If I gave her a cracker she will suck/munch on it but she's not at a development level where she can reach out and grab food of her own choosing yet. I think that approach presumes two things: 1 that the baby won't need any kind of encouraging to try something new (I think some do and some don't, as with walking etc etc) and 2 that you will have food within the baby's reach.
The thing I don't like about it is that when a 4mo baby suddenly wakes three times in the night but used to sleep through, then (IMO) the milk just isn't filling her up for long enough anymore and solids are the way to go. Otherwise I'd be up all night! -------------  |

Hehe wondered if anyone will notice the time - good spotting Leish! I'm not too tired as I normally wake up once in the night to feed her and express (I have hands free expressing kit so spend the time browsing the net  ) I would have watched America's cup but it was delayed until after I went to bed at 2:30am 
I'm thinking of showing this article to our GP when we go for the jabs in 2 weeks time and see what she'll say - I kind of like this approach. It will be interesting to know if anyone on here has tried something similar. ------------- http://lilypie.com"> http://lilypie.com">

| Any ideas on how to stop my little boy falling asleep when breastfeeding at night? He gets a bottle from DH at around 11pm, but when I am breastfeeding during the night he tends to only last 5 - 10 minutes and the that's it. I've tried changing him, burping him etc. but he's not interested after his initial feed. Only problem is he then wakes again in an hour or two for more. |

Yummymummy, I haven't heard of this approach either, but it was definitely an interesting article. But I'd like to know more about the intent behind it -- babies put EVERYTHING in their mouths at that stage, so how do we know that they're actually tasting the food in order to EAT it and not just because they're exploring it, much like my baby "explored" delightful things like facecloths, rubber ducks in the bath, and the dog's rope toy? (Ewwww on that last one!) Emma Rose could "eat" a facecloth for ages -- too bad it had no nutritional value! LOL I like the idea of babies "choosing" what they want to eat and really going for it, but I do worry about how to know just how much they're eating. It's so easy to look at the amount on the side of the tin and say to yourself, "Right, Baby was hungry tonight, she ate three tins!" And despite what they wrote about choking, I was still suspicious. I think choking is one of the biggest worries for parents starting their babies on solids, and I don't think it's totally unfounded. I'd love to see more research on this topic -- have you seen anything about it elsewhere? Do you think you might give it a go? Keep us posted! |

I'm with Katherine, I think it's great in theory, but how do you know how much they're actually eating?
The gremlins have never been big fans of baby mush, they much prefer finger foods but I worry about how much actually goes in and how much ends up mashed in their hair, on the floor, in their ears etc. so I make them have baby mush before they have finger foods at each meal. Maya on the other hand hoovered baby mush like she was a starving orphan, goes to show how different babies can be. I'd be keen to see how you get on if you decide to give it a go tho! ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)
