Daniel is fully breast fed but DH and I have a deal where he looks after him until midnight so I can get a couple of hours sleep. In the beginning he was able to give him EBM in a cup but as he became a piggy this soon became unworkable..

We wanted to give Daniel a chance to get really good at breastfeeding before introducing a bottle and I think he's there so my question is..

How much would I need to express during the day to make sure DH has enough to bottle feed him one feed in the evening if Daniel wakes up wanting one (we demand feed)

I'm sure there are better people to answer this but what I would do is express as much as you can (since you have to express into fresh containers alhtough once same temp you can add together) during the day. Then get DH to feed him an amount and keep topping it up if he eats all of it. This way you won't have to chuck out your precious "gold". You would then be able to see roughly how much he takes too. Whatever he doesn't take could be kept for next day or frozen.

Thats a GREAT DEAL!!!! Good on you!

I would express after each feed during the day and make up say two bottles of 100mls? Then if not used put in freezer in cubes?

My girls would take around 100ml each of EBM per feed at Daniels age, but I agree with Faraway, offer him a smaller amount first and add more as he finishes it coz it is frustrating as heck having to tip it down the sink if they don't finish it all!

The best time to express is after the first feed in the morning as you have more milk in the morning. Ideally, 2-3am is when your prolactin levels are highest, but who wants to be up expressing then?!

Ok, I feel qualified to answer! YAY. I was expressing for Sam a few weeks ago and at two weeks old he would take anything between 70mls and 110mls, So I would go with what Faraway and Kelpa said.

hehe yes it's a great deal but at the moment there's not much point in it when DH has to wake me up when he wants a feed.

Thanks girls!

I had to leave James with Si last night to take Kayla to hospital. Turns out he had 150mls of EBM. I would express after his feeds as this will make up a bottle of hind milk and fill him up nicely till its your turn again :)

Kayla Rose is now 4!
James Sydney is nearly 2!

Jack at that age took up to 120mls which has slowly increased.

We had the same deal, but now Jack doesn't wake till around 2am!
