Even before we had Gina, we had decided to b/feed for 6 months and then wean onto formula. As it is b/feeding never worked out for us, but I do express pretty much 100% of her feeds. She is almost 5 months now and that has got me started thinking about weaning. I have decided to get her thru her jabs on 100% b/milk and then go for another 2 weeks. I'm thinking of starting to reduce it after that though.

At the moment I express 5-6 times a day and my boobs still get very sore when full so I can not cut it out at once. I was thinking of first reducing the frequency to 4 times daily, than 3 then twice and then stopping. Has anyone tried a similar approach? I was thinking of maybe lasting 2 weeks at each stage but really not sure?

How and at what age did you wean your baby?

What a fantastic job you have been doing keeping up with all that expressing!!

I've been weaning Brenna for AGES (can't bring myself to stop totally), but that's pretty much what I did -one feed at a time. I'm now down to one feed per day. I found that doing it gradually was good in a couple of ways...it was the best thing for my boobs (they would have gotten too sore and I get breast infections really easily) and it also meant Brenna's system got used to formula over time. I know people who have gone 'cold turkey' and they would just express off when they were sore to relieve the discomfort.

I was thinking that too - a longer period will give Gina more of a chance to get used to formula so hopefully she won't get constipated etc. Plus will be adding more solids as time goes on (haven't started yet), so if formula makes her constipated, she'll be able to get her calcium from cheese/milk/yoghurt. I'm too chicken to go cold turkey and keep thinking maybe 6 months is too early as we'll just be starting solids then? Maybe too much change won't go down well

I was expressing fully when I weaned the gremlins, and I pretty much just cut back gradually over 7 days. Rather than expressing every 3 hours, I only expressed when I felt unbearably full, and then when I did express I only expressed just enough to take the fullness out, rather than totally draining the breast. It took just over a week I think.

Good on you for keeping it up so long, I know what hard work expressing is - you are a legend!

Thanks Emma! You made me blush! It hasn't been easy but I'm glad I stuck to it and there isn't that long to go now. In fact I think I'll miss being the 'chief milk maker' in our house - also there goes my excuse for schoffing down all that chocolate (purely to keep my energy & milk supply up, you understand)
