| Hi, probably a weird question, but just something I've been thinking about for a little while... You know how before you're ready to TTC you do what you can to avoid pregnancy? Well, I just want to know whether anyone knows or has heard whether all this contraception actually affects fertility? I was on depo for 7 years and then the pill for two. Now, I think - my poor body!! FPA went nuts at me when they clicked that I'd been on the injection for so long and refused to give it to me again (which is good!) Apparently there had been research since i first went on it and I went on it too young, and was on it for too long etc... Anyway... any thoughts??? |

don't know about the contraception affecting your fertility, but it took nearly 16 months for me to get any ovulating pains after I stopped taking the pill in preparation for TTC.
As for the injection reseach. I think this will always happen as more and more research is done, people will find that you should/shouldn't take it for a million different reasons. It's the same for all medication ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I've heard the same for the injection, that it is a possible side effect, but I don't know about the pill. -------------  |

For sure....yes some women do fall pregnant as soon as they come off the pill but for some women in can muck them up and it can take a long time to come right.
I definetly think giving your body a break before you TTC is a good thing. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I didn't get AF for over 5 motnths when I came of the pill, which was hard as we were ttc badly!, Ended up at the docs scared as she said its normal and nothing to investgate for up to a delaying effect on ovulation etc
Good news though I did get pregnant with my son without AF every showing up so not to worry if you are in that boat it just takes more time  ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Hi ya. I went on depo when I was about 19ish and was on it for 7 years too. I stopped having it after asking FPA about new research in to long term use and they said that there was some information about bone density being affected and I had broken both my legs (on seperate occasions) in the couple of years before that so stopped straight away. I didn't start getting AF for 18 months  after stopping though. After AF started again it only took 4 cycles for us to fall pregnant so I don't think that our fertility was affected at all. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

Good to hear people's different experiences, thanks Leish, good to hear that about you. They told me the bone density thing too and made me go for a bone density scan. Just waiting and hoping here that I haven't done anything to stuff up my body. Sounds like a time thing though which is really good to know Thank you

ok slight thread jacking here - I am thinking of going on the depo for the first time (as I have always been on the pill before having Rhyley) I just not 100% sure of it. Reason more so is if we decide to have another one it may take along time to get pregnant and I am not spring chickhen (34) and it would be at least a year before we even though about another one. ALso did everyone put weight on? and my friends said it can drive a sane woman mad (LOL) is it true? meaning do you getting 'hormonal' more?

Hi AnnC - When I went on the injection I was 18. My periods stopped straight away. You get it in your bum- its a BIG needle and my right leg from bum cheek down went numb every time for the rest of the day. But you only get it once every 12 weeks so its very easy. It didn't affect my moods/sex drive or weight at all (I don't think - I'm still the same in all those things I think as when I was then). The only real sure thing is weight though cause they weigh you each time and I always weighed the same. I weigh the same now as when I was 18. I can't remember when my periods started again but I think it was a couple of months. But before I went on it I was pretty irregular and now I'm still irregular so I can't say whether it affected them at all. My sister loved the sound of no periods so she tried it but she only had one and bled for 8 weeks so never tried again. Obviously it works differently for everyone.
Sorry for the novel  Finally I feel like I can kind of give advice instead of just asking all the time. Lol. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

My doctor has NEVER let me go on the injection because there is research that 'claims' if you have no idea what your fertility levels are like, you shouldn't go on something that never lets you have periods, and is so strong that it can take up to half the time (or sometimes more) of being on it to get your AF back regularly when you go off.
He said he would only let me go on it after I've had children as the side effects aren't well enough known for people to be screwing with their systems. |
