So i am at the point where I have to think of this again. I normally go on the pill but not keen on that as I hate having to remember to take it. So I was looking into other contraception and I am not allowed the IUD - on my notes as I had one put in and ended up in hospital. So only other option is condoms (over it) and Depo (or the absaining but DH wouldn't be happy LOL) so my question is after all the intro is:

Whose been on the depo and what do you think of it?

Did you put much weight on?

Did it make you sh#ty all the time as I have heard?

How long after you came off it it take to get pregnant (if this applies)?

I am on the injection now and have found it to be fine. generally i have little to no reactions being on the pill normally and off ocntraception very little homronal changes. I didn't put on weight but was making a conscious effot to lose at the time. my injetor told me that the injection itself doesn't cause wieght gain, but it does cause you to be hungrier - hence eating more and eventual weight gain.

i haven't experienced much in the way of mood cahnges. - maybe hubby will differ!

I put on a little bit of weight, nothing I couldn't cope with.

And I was really moody... but that could have been a whooooole lotta other stuff!

I still would have rather been on the injection than be pregnant, so it was good enough for me!

Oh yeah, and I was on it for a year and got my period back straight after it wore off. I didn't get pregnant (Thank God!) but I'm pretty sure I could have.

i'm very anti the injection - anything that stops what nature intended cant be good.

wow just got some very interesting info from a google search - wikipedia had heaps to say about it. Did you know for example that the FDA approved it for use in the USA for contraceptive us in 1994 - and it is also used with male sex offenders as a form of chemical castration as it has the effect of drastically reducing sex drive in males.

Stuff i never knew.

Heres the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depo_Provera - link if you want to know some more.

I researched the injection before I had babies and was frightened off by the risk of it causing depression (in people who are predisposed to depression).
Are you not allowed any kind of IUD? Cos the Mirena is quite different to the traditional IUDs and has been a great option for me.

i had looked into the mirina and talked to midwife she said i needed to go to FP rather than dr to talk over it more and the risks of me having it again. Chances are it would be ok, my crohns was really bad and the IUD got infected (or so they think) and put me in hospital with major stomach pains, which i don't want to experience again. So I am bit frightened of them as well. So I may do that.

GandT I was anti depo too cause i couldn't imagine not having a period i would be pariod every month., am i pregnant??

Oh and if it decreases you sex drive, I won't be touching it as DH thinks hes hard done by already (I hav little to none sex drive)

I just remembered this... and yep for me. That was probably what I suffered most... and one of the reasons for going off it and onto something non-hormonal.

Whose been on the depo and what do you think of it? I went on it when I was about 16, I hated it, I got bloated, was forever hungry, and went quite nutty lol

Did you put much weight on? went from a size 10 to a 14 (didnt bother me much though)

Did it make you sh#ty all the time as I have heard? my moods went up and down very easily

How long after you came off it it take to get pregnant (if this applies)? I went off it and switched to the pill

well after reading these comments (and thinking a wee bit harder)I think I shall pass on the depo (the low sex drive was the selling point as it would lead to divorse LOL)- which leaves me with the Pill again.. Buggar it all...wish we had that one where you got it put in your arm - seems like it would make life so much easier.

This is the reason why I wont use the injection. As I did suffer from depression before hand (huge stuff due to my mother) that is can push you over the edge. So just for safety reasons I wont take it.

Isnt there also a thing that you can only take it for 3 years and then afterwards you have to give it a break for a while? Or is that a myth?

Using the minipill this side. And finally found one that I dont spot on.

see the pill was great in yhe fact that - no babies and felt fine on, periods were fine etc.. it's just remembering to take it, before baby I'd forget and now that I have baby brian I worry... Oh joys could always get Dh to get the snip LOL (isn't really an option as may have another if we decide to)

I was on Depo for 7 years and loved it!! I loved not getting any periods, didn't put on weight, didn't get depressed and didn't affect my sex drive. It worked really well for me. After coming off though it took 18 months for my periods to start again. After being on it for so long I won't use it again as there was some research done showing that long term use can impact bone density.

I was on depo for 6 months - started out great, and then the breakthrough bleeding started. I thought it was because it was 'wearing off' after the first 2 1/2 months, and so got a top up - and it kept going. NOT NICE to bleed EVERY TIME you have sex... and I was stuck for another 3 months with it. Afterwards I had to switch to a higher dose pill to stop the bleeding (the low dose one just didn't stop it any more), so I'm not keen on it at all.

I've actually just come off the pill to have a go at Natural Fertility Awareness - basically the same as everyone does here to GET pregnant, but AVOIDING sex (or using condoms) on the 'good' days. I'm sick of pumping hormones into my body, and so this feels really good for me. I have done a lot of research on this, and the effectiveness is pretty high. Just something else to think about...

Ann C, I wrote earlier on the thread about contraception affecting fertility about my experience with depo. It is definitely NOT for everyone. I loved it and my sister didn't stop bleeding.
There are so many things to choose from in regards to contraception though. All the best with your decision

wow catherine I would be so paraniod about the natural way - i know my aunty uses this (or did) and shes never got pregnant.
Funlvn - my friend has been on the depo for years and she likes it so I guess whats good for some isn't for others. I would hate break thru bleeding all the time since I have short periods now its been and gone very quickly.(well was this is my 3rd Af sincehaving Rhyley so hasn't gone back to normal yet but is getting less each time)

I put on a tonne of weight with depo so would never touch it again. I also had friends who lost their sex drive and suffered from depression on it.

Trouble is that it's really difficult to keep up temping with babies/toddlers in the house. Gotta be really disciplined and remember to temp, and they can sometimes go awol from lack of sleep!

ETA: I'm actually mostly pro this option, don't wanna sound completely sour puss LOL!

True, BusyMum - You don't sound sourpuss at all, I'm afraid I don't know about the little one sleep-deprivation yet.

I've actually cheated and spent a small fortune on a little computer thing that tells me what to do! ie alarm goes off on it, take temp, and a light comes on telling me whether its safe or not. Green means GO!!! you're infertile, red means STOP!!! about to/actually ovulating, and yellow is learning, so be careful. When we are ready to start our family, BD on the red days instead! It was a major investment though, and although it should pay for itself over time (lasts over 10 years), it's not for everyone.

All the best deciding which contraception to use!
