I was thinking about this today, and thought it might be interesting to ask you all ...If you had the financial resources and ability to realise your dream, what would you do?

Me? I'd own a small bookshop/cafe. I love books and reading, and I couldn't imagine something I'd love more than to have a small shop with books ceiling to floor with a hung ladder for getting at the top levels, old leather smoking chairs dotted around so people could enjoy a coffee and sommething yummy like a muffin or brownie. I'd also love to have a fireplace in there, and preferably the building would be old. I could probably even convert an old cottage. I'd probably lose any number of books to coffee spills of course, but that's where I'd keep a section of damaged books that people were absolutely welcome to flick through. I'd keep more unusual books probably, maybe even rare books ... that sort of thing. It would be a place where people could seek sanctuary, but it'd also be a place where mums could meet with their children. It'd be an everyone's bookshop.

Anyway, that's my heart's desire, and has been for many years. What's yours?

My dream? I'd write a novel. I've actually been writing a novel for about four years now, but haven't gotten past the second chapter, snort. Next year when Emma Rose starts preschool, I'll have 12 hours a week that I'll hopefully be able to devote to this novel-writing dream... That is, if I can manage to stay away from OHbaby! when I'm supposed to be writing!

Mmmmm my dream I would have an old Victorian type house or an Old Dutch Capetonian home with an large piece of land and have my own little bit of lifestock ect and my own vegatable and fruit orchard. I will have hubby working from home and going in about once a week.

Simple style of life. And I will have another baby and after that perhaps adopt one from China.

My dream is to one day own/host a B&B... I kinda picture it, after our youngest (at the time) is 2 or 3, ie I don't have a baby on my hands, that I could have a simple and private B&B on our land (which means we'd need a bigger home and section too ) and I can still raise kids, homeschool, and do the B&B thing.... of course I'd have hired help cause you said money is not a prob

I would love to have a big piece of land with a big huge house for us and kind of seperated I would have an old style (but modern) barn which would have bar and food facilities and I would hire it out for weddings/conferences etc... but mainly weddings. I would also have a big beautiful garden with waterfall and trees, the perfect ceremony setting and also have some sort of accommodation, cabins and places to pitch a tent but it would be nice but affordable. Somewhere you can hire for the whole weekend and have people stay so they dont have to drive home afterwards and it could be a real weekend occassion. We did that with my brothers wedding down south but it had really yucky camp bunk style accommodation but it was right by a beautiful lake and in the morning everyone just sort of rolled out of bed and we had a huge cooked breakfast and just relaxed with the family and friends, kids running all over the place playing, was soooo cool.
Also I would love to have a one stop wedding shop. You could get everything you need in one place rather than having to go onto the internet and a hundred different shops. It would have a coffee machine and big couches that you could sit in and read books, gather ideas and plan.... If you havent guessed already I love weddings hehe.

Awesome thread Ginger. I love your dream - I could come in and read Katherine's book after visiting the scrapbook shop next door, while on a weekend staying at Busymum's B&B!

I have so many dreams! As I get older, I want different things. I envy those who have a long-term dream/passion, how wonderful to know what you want.

Most recently, if I had the financial resources etc., I would love to create a huge commune like community for my extended family, providing housing for everyone and big communal areas for kids to play and childcare and gardens - a self-sufficient type place, finding a good mix of individual living with the benefits of a close community. Gosh, that sounds like some sort of crazy cult, doesn't it?
My intention would be to give the people in my large family a place to settle, as there are many who are struggling and I would love to see them thrive in their goals without having to worry about a place to live/food/bills etc.   Running a place like that, and potentially opening it up to others, would be wonderful. That is of course assuming my family would be interested in it!

Otherwise, living at the beach in a simple house with a boat and room for the kids to run around. Really making a go of my fledgling PR/wedding planning/special event co-ordination business, getting completely set up and being able to pick and choose the jobs to fit around family. Magic!

Isn't being a mum pretty good training for being a police officer - at least in the teenage years!

Ginger, have you read Bookends?

I would love to not have to work, and live on a sustainable piece of land in an eco house, probably somewhere around where we are now. Huge vege garden and fruit trees, barter with someone for meat etc etc. I was going to say I would love it to be with other family members, but dont know if I could handle my ILs!!

I would love to live on a lifestyle block but just a bit bigger than a lifestyle block (more than just a few arces, I would like at least 10). Have a huge vege/fruit garden and glasshouses so things can be grown all year round. Have a few animals (some I don't get attached to, so we can eat them) chickens, cows, sheep and pigs so we can have all sorts of different meats. Have people come and go to look after the animals and the areas they live (have things like fences fixed when needed and shearing done etc). Have a huge house that has about 5 bedrooms 2 bathrooms, an ensuite off the master. Log burner and heat transfer to all bedrooms so heat is nicely transfered. All the kitchen appliances and all with their own space were they can be on the bench and not have to be moved to use, or moved to have bench space. A huge lounge room with a TV of DH's choice and entertainment system. Decks of the living areas with outdoor furniture and a private deck off the master. Also have a few cars, a 4WD, a holden and a people mover of some sort.

One day I will get this i'm sure.

We are already looking at our dream of a lifestyle block - soon we will get there i hope...

I have a couple of ideas for childrens books and would put those in place

I have a couple of ideas for a retail shop...yes two different ones and would love ot to have to worry about how to fund them or live while i was doing them

DH and i want a big boat, and he would love to run charters....without having to work anywhere else...

I would love to be in a position to be funded behind the scenes somehow to offer my professional advise free where needed and be able to run with it for those truly in need and unable to afford it.

I would live in a huge period house just like Wuthering Heights and write poetry all day. And probably drink myself into an early grave as all the great writers seem to do, but hey, it's romantic!
At the moment the only romance in my life is my illegitimate love children

I don't really know what I'd like to do now. I've had a few.

1. Become a qualified airforce test pilot. But I can't cuz of the glasses.

2. The other thing I've thought of is own an international graphic design company. I'd hire some hot managers, live off a little company profit and design for fun, without the pressure of managing the business. I'd franchise parts of the company out to deal with the cross border differences in product and state rules. "This is the premise upon which we serve our customers. It's your job to make that work in your local area..." kind of thing.

3. Travel with my family. Letting the kids see the world, while enjoying my wifes company there, (wherever there finds us.) Actually, i think this might be more doable that i first thought....

I have always thought that I'd love to own a beautiful piece of land, near some vineyards, but with a gorgeous view of water(be it lake or sea), with a big house on it, with seperate facilities to host guests. And run it like a B&B but with the added bonuses of cookery weekends - where I could teach the guests to cook some beautiful meals (I am a Chef by trade), wine appreciation weekends, wine AND food weekends (can you tell I like wine), even outdoorsy weekends where DH and I could take guests out Fishing, kyaking(sp??) etc.

Of course the land would have to come with quite a few acres so that we could have some animals (DH ex farmer), not heaps but enough and a good range (including a few horses -MIL owns 9 so that could probably easily be arranged), and huge gardens so that we could be pretty much self sufficient and cook the guests beautiful meals that come from our land.

Hailstones - I'd love to own a vineyard too & live in an old stone house (renovated to have all mod-cons though with insulation!!) with plenty of bedrooms & bathrooms, a library & guestrooms. Similiar to how it would be in France, but in the NZ. We'd have a big swimming pool & spa outside with a great entertainment area. Somewhere on a hill with a view of the ocean in the distance. Dh would potter on the vineyard for maybe 5 - 6 hours during the day - but wouldn't have to work on the weekends, so there was plenty of time to spend with the family.

Oh the joys of dreams!!!

I would love to have a farm (drystock), which also has a heap of hunting opportunities for DF, running along the coast with a gorgeous schist stone house built on it, semi close to town so I can run my own law office from home when I want to, or go into the office in town when I want to...the house would have 4 or 5 bedrooms plus my office area, plus a separate self contained guest wing, we would have a cleaner, the dogs would stay outside (hahaha, this is a dream right??) or at least not in the bedrooms, would have a couple of horses so I could just go riding where my heart desires...have a Holden s/w (big enough for the kids and the dogs), a proper 4wd for DF, couple of motorbikes...and I could shop in whatever shop I want without having to faint at the price.

Easy....world travel. And once we'd done with that come back to our self sustainable life style block and work for pleasure not necessity. Well I'd probably still be a SAHM until the kids were in school then I'd finally become a vet nurse.

I'm pretty happy with what I'm doing now, I've started Bible College and will be working my way through to hopefully do the Diploma in Counselling.

I would love to have my own cake shop/bakery similar to Eve's pantry. Where I can bake and cook all day, and have a few tables where customers can have a coffee and some cake. Maybe next to gingers bookshop.
I would have to have all baked goods, cakes, slices, muffins, chocolates, and it would be successful enough that I could go on ingredient/idea sourcing trips once a year.

This is something I plan to do when I hit the big 40 and my as yet unborn children will be at school.

If it was a lotto win, i'd prob be a SAHM and have overseas holidays every year.

To be able to travel - wherever and whenever. DH and I share similar dreams, we would love to be able to take the kids (when we have had them!!) to 'live' in fantastic places around the world for months at a time. Like spending 4months over summer living in a greek fishing village, then spending winter living in the alps somewhere so that they can experience a white Xmas.

Our kids will have EU passports, so the only thing stopping us is the money!!

My personal dream is to spend some time living in Manhattan (NY) and Paris. Where I can spend my days at the galleries, museums, markets and shops then spend my evenings at the restaurants I have always dreamed of eating at.

Of course - after all this travel, we will have a beautiful home on the beach (within an hour or so of Auckland) where I can relax and remember all our wonderful travels!

My ultimate career dream... to own about 5-10 acres within 20 minutes of town (haha, money's no object!!) where I would build a beautiful homestead for us with the cool entrance where the cars sweep in front of the stairs leading up to the front door (we've already planned a house like this, we're nerds). Separated from that, I would have a wedding venue that is a beautiful homestead looking place but bigger, where people can BYO everything (I couldn't find this for our wedding, so there you are). And the gardens would be just magical for weddings. Yes, I love weddings But it wouldn't be a money-making venture, I would be a lady of leisure so it would be just for the fun of it. Oh yeah, we have workers to do the hard stuff for us!

We would also have a holiday ISLAND (not home) in Raro or somewhere like it, and have shares in a ChiangMai (Thailand) resort where we stayed. I would go over there with the hubby and thousands of kids 2-3 times a year just to go to the fab market! Oh, dreams are free...

We'd build our dream home... we've planned it, it's huge! Probably move to Australia... depending on when, Nat would finish his study then work his way up to pastoring his own church and I'd be a SAHM until our youngest is at school then work in a high school library... I'd drive a bright yellow VW Bug or a red Corvette sports car; Nat would have a black BMW sports car (he's told me which one, but I've forgotten) for personal use and a dark green BMW sedan for business use (he'd get similar ones for all his pastoral team); and we'd have a big 4wd for family trips.

What a cool thread! Look at all these dreams Wow! I'd have a block (a big block - but realistically probably only about 10 acres) of land. Lots of room for all the animals we already have (2 horses, 2 dogs, 2 cats) and a few more. A few kids - I like the number 4 there.
