I got my mooncup today!! Which cheered me up while I was dying on the couch (I love my puppies - they know Mum is sick, and didn't even bark when the courier came up the steps) - yay for GreenBeans!

It's different to what I expected - more solid ... though that's a good thing! I almost can't wait until I get to use it

I was a little wee bit bummed though - I really wanted to try their liners, but they have no stock, except for the robot design liners But, impatience won out over waiting for the new stock to arrive (new stock comes in every month according to the website), so I ordered one anyway Bummer though - my mooncup arrived, and there was a note on my invoice that the robot liners are coming in September. September! Bollocks!

I thought that was just a wee bit on the nose - although they have been great to deal with so far, so I actually feel bad whinging about it.

I did email and ask that when they get their new stock, could they substitute the robots for something else. Whether they will or not, I have no idea, but it was worth the ask I thought ... especially since I am the most un-roboty person on earth!

That'll learn me for not being patient! I have to be doubly patient now as penance

(Ha ha ha! Two Blondinis!! )

I just had an email back from GreenBeans and it seems ...

I should never have gotten out of bed this morning, or attempted to function while I have the lurg. 'Coming Sep' doesn't mean coming September, it means, coming separately ... as in, the liner will come direct from Outrageous. Doh. What a complete egg. I think I even read on the website that they do that, and it went awol in my faulty memory.

Yay for the liner coming though! Even if it is robots!!

I am such a dork.

It's a bit self-centered too Lulu - with endometriosis and all the problems it's caused me (incl the surgery being a bust) I thought that being a bit more 'natural' about things and keep the chemicals and cotton fibres etc out of the equation may just help things. It may not too, of course but I can only hope! I suppose it's a bit like IVF - its possibly a solution for us, to our infertility, so I'm willing to go above and beyond what I thought I might to possibly have that solution.

Oh, and P.S. As the mooncup comes under the 'shopping' umbrella, I can't help myself being excited!

I'm pretty sure Sarah has been snowed under, they recently moved to a bigger premises (yay for GB growing!!!) so I *think* they are still catching up on themselves.

If there are issues I'd just drop Sarah a freindly email, she really is a fab person and great to deal with.

And Ginger...Stacey is normally pretty onto with sending stuff out so you'll probably get your liner pretty promptly.

Hehe ...

Me "Hey! Do you want to see my mooncup?!"

DH (looks a bit shocked) "Uhhh ... where is it?"

You have to wonder sometimes about the male mind.

Sarah is really friendly Paws! And to be honest, I was quite surprised about how quickly my mooncup arrived (payment made Monday, she would have received it Tuesday, mooncup arrived today!), and I really wasn't expecting it by courier post.

I'm beginning to wonder if you have an 'in' with these people you know ...

I swear, I've been checking my email about 5 times a day waiting for an email to say you can pre-order stock in case I miss out!

BS - I liner is a good idea while you are getting the hang of inserting the mooncup, it does take a little practise and leaks can occur if you don't have it in right.

I used a liner for my first couple of cycles and now I don't bother.

Haleighsmum - a mooncup is a cup used instead of a tampon, it's inserted much like one but sits lower and collets the blood. You only need to empty in and reinsert.

Not only do you save a fortune money wise but they also have no associated TSS risks. Women also report shorter, lighter, less painful periods using mooncups and cloth pads. No one really knows why it happens but it does!

Call me silly but I'm wondering how you disinfect it? Throwing tampons away solves that problem and I've always wondered exactly how you would lower the chances of infection with cleaning a mooncup.
And how long do they last?

BS - I don't use tampons at night, and probably won't use the mooncup at night either, so I want them for when I have a light flow at night where I need something, but just something light Plus, yes, while getting used to the mooncup, it'll assist my paranoia

Ha ha! Coming Sep!

I have to confess Ginger, I bought the last two rocket liners from Greenbeans just before you would have ordered the robot ones. I was getting too impatient waiting for the next upload of new stock (which I always miss anyway) and am soooo not a robot or rocket person, but chose the most appealing out of the two. Sorry!

I am working up to a mooncup.

Boil it before each use. And I guess if you are ultra clean you could boil it again each time you empty it, though I just rinse it under hot water.

(Oh and wash hands before and after use etc)

Oh yeah, and the little book thingy says to wash it with soapy water.

ANDDDDD they last 10 years.

Here's another silly question .... tampons are fairly easy to tell if they are due to be changed, how do you tell with a mooncup?

Hee hee! So I guess we will both be waiting for the next lot to go on sale then huh? The rocket ones arrived today and they're actually better than I thought they looked online, so you may be surprised with the robots.

Because you can see how much is in there when you empty it, you can figure out how long you can leave it before emptying. I empty in the morning and at night... and that's nowhere near full!

Sorry for threadjacking Ginger - figure you'd be all for the cause

Same here...I only empty once a day.

And tampons can't be as hygenic if they have associate risks...the fact that mooncup has none speaks for the safetly of it really.

I steralise once a month and hot wash in between uses.

The main problem with tampons is TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) which happens when you leave anything internally for a length of time (which is why many tampon companies recommend using pads etc at night and tampons during the day). I would assume the same could happen with a mooncup though TSS is pretty rare and I've seen maybe one case in 10 years of nursing.

I'll certainly have a think about it once I get back on my cycle after baby. I can see how much cheaper it'd be .... 10 years of tampons is a heck of a lot of $$$!

Those liners look great! I never knew you could get those. So who else uses those???
I have a moon cup, but only got to use it 2x between having a baby, getting my period and getting pregnant again! (lucky me! )

Hehe, had to laugh at the 'coming sep' haha

I guess the difference is all the things that could be inside the tampon that your body could absorb or whatever... I don't think it is the same when you are using medical grade silicon. Does that make sense?

Alright, found the FAQ on the Mooncup site and this is what it says -

Dear Su
I've been using my Mooncup for the first time these past few days and it
seems to be working really well. Everything everyone says about it on your
site is true. I particularly like the idea that I can forget about it and
just need to empty it once on waking and once before sleep. However I'm still a little concerned about the risk of toxic shock syndrome from leaving it in for a long time.
My cup only gets about half full in half a day, so is it okay to leave it in for those 8 hours without changing it?

Thanks
Lucy

Dear Lucy
Thank you for your email. I am glad that you are getting along with your Mooncup! You are right to be concerned about toxic shock syndrome, and with the Mooncup it is important to regularly remove and clean it as by doing so you prevent any build-up of the bacteria that cause this illness. We recommend that you remove and clean your Mooncup 4 times during a 24-hour day and that you boil it for 5 minutes between periods. TSS has been linked to high absorbency and prolonged use of tampons. The Mooncup differs from tampons in that the material that it is made of does not support the growth of bacteria in the way that the rayons and cottons used in tampons do. Menstrual cups have been around since the 1930s but have not been associated with toxic shock syndrome. TSS is most common in women aged between the ages of 15 and 19 and the risk of contracting it decreases with age. As a precaution, you should be aware that the symptoms of TSS could include sudden high fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, fainting, or a rash rather like sunburn. Should you experience these symptoms during your period you should remove your Mooncup and contact your GP immediately. I hope that this information is useful for you.

Best Wishes
Su

Well im a little happier. I emailed Sarah and I knew she would get back to me. She is going to be lovely and send my PUL and snaps to me on Tuesday as my mum's machine will be packed away to go to oz soon, then once the microfibre arrives she'll get that sent off asap. I'm so looking forward to more nappies.
