KidsCan Charitable Trust is a national charity dedicated to levelling the playing field for New Zealand children living in poverty. Each year we make a tangible difference for over 16,000 children through the following programmes .... 'Raincoats for Kids' Low decile schools report high rates of absence in winter as many children simply do not own a raincoat. In partnership with Warehouse Stationery (principal partner of 'Raincoats for Kids') we provide over 8,000 free raincoats to children from low income families each year, ensuring they arrive at school warm, dry and in a better position to learn. 'Food for Kids' Children living in poverty can never be sure of receiving three meals a day, often filling their tummies on what they get out of the school water fountain. The KidsCan 'Food for Kids' programme (proudly supported by Conferenz) provides free food at school for over 6,000 financially disadvantaged children a week. 'Shoes for Kids' Provides free quality footwear and socks for children who consistently come to school in winter without shoes or with shoes that are in bad condition. 'Shoes for Kids' (proudly supported by Number 1 Shoes) is reducing foot injury and illness and keeping their feet warm and dry in winter. So far more than 2,000 pairs of shoes have been given to children throughout New Zealand. There are thousands more children who need our help and yours! We have a waiting list of more than 10,000 Kiwi kids who are going to school cold, hungry and without shoes right now! A little goes a long way! More than 400 children from Lower Hutt's Rata Street School are getting the raincoats under the KidsCan scheme. Principal Dave Appleyard said many came to school every day cold and wet, making it difficult for them to learn. Parents in his decile 1 school were hard-pressed to provide essentials for their children. Professor O'Brien, in his report Full Tummies and Dry Clothes: Evaluating the KidsCan Programmes, made public today, said it was resoundingly clear that the gift of a normally expensive and quality item "has made a huge impression on the children for whom this rarely, if ever, occurs" The report into the scheme shows that kids helped by this charity are turning up to school more often, performing better in class and getting into trouble less. For those of you able to sponsor a child - $10 a month is a lot less than a dollar a day and you will be making a big difference to kids in NZ. Who knows, you may turn around the life of a kid that would have otherwise turned to gangs and crime? ------------- |

| Having come out of those schools I know it might be a good idea - but the best thing for me is supporting our own kids!!! I am so sick of everyone wanting money for kids in africa all the time....!!! |
