Today the gremlins drank a grand total of 260ml formula each all day. 80ml at 10am, 80ml at 1pm and 100ml at 6pm. And they each had about 30ml of water.
I *know* they aren't having enough fluid, but how the heck do I make them take more? Should I try giving them juice instead of water and see if they drink more of it? They used to have a bottle at 4pm as well, but I've recently cut it out coz they would only have about 40ml then wouldn't eat a lot of dinner and then take a pathetic amount of bedtime bottle at 6pm. But they're not taking any more of the bedtime bottle than they did when they were having the 4pm as well. They're sleeping fine, but constipated  -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Tricky one Emma cause if they were bf no one would have a clue how much they were drinking and it wouldn't be as big a deal . But are they still eating really light? Oh no not another doc apmt ------------- |

so when are you giving them water? just with their meals?

EM I hope you feeding the little piggy called Gabriella didnt bring this on??? Her downing 240 plus mls in one go is just her being a guts!!!!
......and today she did THREE bottle instead of usual two....AND fed off me....am thinking growth spurt now!!!! |

*puts hand up* my wee man is the nov boy with the milk strike. although he had a wee bit more than the girls, he had about 50mls for breakfast, about 60mls for lunch, but got better as the day went on 150mls at 4pm and 200mls at bed time,although bit later bedtime today at 8pm. totally of 460mls (wait it was only 410mls all day oh well too late to correct myself)
Hes been funny the past couple of days and i wonder if its his teeth as he is happy to eat his solids. I don't give any fluids but milk... hes not consipated either (huge explotion today) Sorry no quick fix or real advise just letting you know their not the only ones on a milk strike. (I am hating throwing away made up formula too) Oh heres some advise found he would drink better in a dream feed... could try that before you head off to bed. ------------- Ann

I would dare say that possibly giving juice wouldn't be the answer.. It may not make em take more and has gotta be more sugary etc than what you're giving.. i spose i'm meaning the effects of giving lots of juice outweighs them having more instead of giving em the milk and water. | The only thing I can think of is spacing their bottles out more - OK so Erin is 1yr but her feeds have been roughly as follows for a while now: 8-8:30am, 12:30-1pm, 7pm. They seem fairly confident with their sippy cups, so leave those nearby for them to use as they please in between formula feeds? As for the constipation I have no idea - we have never really had that problem (quite the opposite in fact). Are they allowed prune juice, or coloxyl? |

Emmmaaa ummmm no juice, but you knew id say that hey... Trying to protect their little teeth. I agree with Jax leave their sippy bottles laying around for them to sip on during the day as they please. 280 isnt too bad plus some water, maybe they will have a few days like that then increase their intake.

Thanks for all the advice  Another thing I am contemplating is switching their bottle/breakfast again so they have milk first then breakfast, they might be hungrier and drink more.
I pretty much leave their sippy cups wherever they are around the house during the day. I'm reluctant with the whole juice thing coz I want them to drink water, and I remember the dietician telling me with Maya that filling her up on juice would just make her eat less food (when we were trying to make her grow). They're still not eaing a huge amount of food either, but I'm not so worried about that, I'm only worried about the milk with the constipation thing. If they don't go properly today I am going to give them some brown sugar in water. I'm tempted to give them fruit for every meal today
For what it's worth, I've tried a bit of really diluted juice in their sippy cups this morning and they aren't any more interested than they were in water. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Woohoo, Sienna just drank 150ml of formula! Mercedes only did 80ml tho And Sienna had one very hard marble in her nappy. As in so hard that I could take it out of the nappy and reuse the nappy coz it was literally a marble and the nappy was still dry ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

i like what james said...could be something in that.
also i would perhaps do the fruit all day thing for the constipation. certainly couldnt hurt and maybe give them pieces of apple to suck/chew on - lots of liquid int here too. hhmmm, maybe not apples tho - the pectin in them can help stop diarrhoea so we dont want it to do that to the girls too...

I found it didn't make a difference with Rhyley if he fed first or not as tried him this morning. What i did have to do though was give him a bottle at 5am as he would not settle (he is so easy to settle so knew something was up) he drank 100mls (as i only made 100mls) and was looking for more. oh the upside of him having that bottle he didn't wake again till 9am so i got a sleep in ------------- Ann

See mine sleep from 6pm till 8am even with their pathetic food/milk intake. The sleep consultant I spoke to recently reckons they probably have high sleep needs on account of being a bit prem. So if I reinstated the dream feed they'd probably sleep till 10am! ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)
